Study The Gurus, Then Sell Their Stuff

Today I talked with a man who is starting his own business on the
Internet. He knew he was far from the first to try to make money
online, so he wisely took time out to read everything he could
get his hands on by those who had come before him. Joe read Corey
Rudl's course, bought Dan Kennedy's books, went through my site,
and picked up Robert Allen's Internet book (it's a good one!).

Once he read the best of the "gurus," Joe decided to start his
online project by selling the same books, courses, and services.

Come to think of it, this is a great way to start an Internet
business. The Internet is all about information, and info
products sell like gangbusters. But don't just put up a trillion
reports by people you've never heard of. Read a few top info
products, use their advice yourself, then report on it to others
while selling those same info products.

Nothing sells information products and services better than the
honest, heartfelt testimonial of someone who has used them.
People may not belive the company ad copy, but they sure will
jump when a fellow customer says "buy it... it's great!"

Put up a web site with YOUR photo and comments on the opening
page. Write articles that openly share some of the guru's ideas.
Put it in your own words and combine their ideas with your own
related experiences.

Your marketing will look and work better if you get good creative
people involved. An experienced or gifted designer can turn your

detail. I like to take an extreme approach. We give the designer
just the barest idea of what we need, then jump for joy over
whatever they produce. After a few projects you will have a
creative who loves the freedom you give them. They will come up
with wonderful ideas you never could have thought of on your own.

Get On Talk Radio..and Promote For Free!

There are thousands of talk radio stations spread through every
community all over North America. There are thousands more music
and news stations who feature at least one talk program each
week.

All these shows need a steady stream of interesting guests.
Nothing strikes fear in a radio talk show hosts like having to do
the show without an expert guest. Contrary to what most people
think, the phones at talk stations don't ring that much. Hosts
need an expert to add content and interest to the program...AND
get listeners calling.

An expert is anyone who knows something other people would like
to know. If you run a daycare center, you might have clever tips
for keeping young children interested and busy at home. An
accountant might find a ready audience for tips on how to keep
the IRS off your back.

Most talk hosts are happy to let your "plug" your business,
product, service, or idea at the end of the show. Speak your
phone number and web site address clearly so interested listeners
can jot them down.

First find talk radio stations in your area. Look through the
yellow pages, tune up and down the dial, then listen to
individual shows to learn the style of the host and the topics
discussed on the show. Call the station and ask to talk with the
host or the show producer. Tell them about your expertise and
what kinds of information you could bring their listeners.

Getting an Appointment

Sometimes selling your product or service can be easier than
getting the actual appointment. No matter how hard you try, you
just can't seem to get the prospect to agree to meeting you face
to face. Here are a few tips that may help.

At first, it is important to sell the appointment, not your
service. Trying to get a contract over the phone is difficult.
The appointment is when you will do the actual selling.

Ask questions where the answer must be "yes." "Would it be better
for us to meet on Monday or Tuesday?" The prospect probably will
pick one or the other and--bingo--you have the appointment. You
might make your dates even more specific, "I have Monday at 10am
and Tuesday at 2pm open. Which would work best for you?"

Asking for the prospect's help can be very effective. If the
prospect says that she doesn't want to meet with you, ask her what
you would have to say in order to convince her that your service
can work. This way, the prospect will be telling you exactly how
to overcome her objection.

Above all, don't push! After a few failed attempts to get an
appointment, it is better to take a fall-back position. Tell him
you understand he is not ready to make any decision. Ask for a
follow-up appointment for a later time.

Spice Up Your Banner or Sign

Boring signs and banners often get boring results. Spice up your
sign for better results.

Get a sign that lets you put a changing message on it. We often
see church signs with a daily inspirational message. Why not have
a changing message of your own? Put up a sale, tell a joke, or
make a comment. People who pass it each day will start to notice.

Go one step further and get an electric sign. Prices are coming
down while sign technology is getting more impressive. Simple
scrolling messages work well, but some allow for animated
graphics.

Use the same drawing or graphic on your sign, on your building,
on your business cards, and in all your ads. A consistent graphic
helps people identify you. It's probably the oldest trick in
marketing dating back to ancient times when most people couldn't
read your name, but could identify your graphic.

Use magnetic signs and bumper stickers on your business vehicles.
You may be surprised how many people you reach in a single
commute. One donut chain always has their vintage van on the
road. The unusual looking vehicle gets attention and draws eyes
to their logo painted on the side.

Color Code Your Print Materials

People often ask me what colors sell best. There are no hard and
fast rules about colors in marketing, but here are some things
that seem to work again and again.

Yellow gets attention, but is hard on the eyes. Use some yellow
in your marketing or on your package, but don't make the whole
thing yellow.

Red makes your document seem urgent or aggressive.

Many feel green makes prospects think about money. A green border
with a graphic of a stack of dollars works well for business
opportunities.

Blue has a long history among Europe's royalty. Today blue still
works well to portray power, authority, or prestige.

Pastels are popular for light or feature stories. If you want
your message to seem fun, use a pastel color. Make sure your copy
shows up well on the paper.

Many people LOVE purple. For some reason it is a favorite among
children and many of us never get over it.

4 Ways to Start a Sales Letter

Over the years, writers have found that there are certain types
of openings in direct mail that are more effective than others.
These work just as well for email letters and for web sites.

Here are some of these ideas to keep in mind when you are trying
to structure your opening.

1) State the offer. This is so simple many people never think of
it. Put the offer right at the top of your page in a headline or
bold type. The offer includes the product that is for sale, its
price, the terms of the sale, and the guarantee.

2) Announce it! If you have something new, start your letter with
this important information. Nothing gets attention and builds
excitement like the word NEW. I always put it in all capitals to
give it added excitement.

3) Flatter the reader. There is nothing a customer likes more
than to feel as though they are set apart from "the crowd".
Describe the type of person who would probably be one of your
best customers. Tell why the way they feel, work, think, or play
is important and deserves attention. Use the word "YOU" as often
as you can.

4) Use a provocative quote. Quote a famous person or a customer.
The quote should arouse curiosity. It should make the reader want
to find out more about your product.

3 Types of Brochures

Do you sell a service? There is an infinite variety of sales
materials that service providers use. However, there are a few
basic types of sales literature; self-mailers, slim-jim
brochures, and fact sheets that work like gangbusters.

The self-mailer is sent through the mail without an outer
envelope. Most are simple in design and constructed by folding a
single piece of paper. The self-mailer is best used when sent to
"cold prospects". You should never use this brochure to answer a
prospect's request for more information. It is likely that they
would see your self-mailer and mistake it for "junk mail".

Slim-jims, a thin brochure named for their slim size, are easily
slipped into standard business envelopes. Because of their small
size, they do not need many designs and visuals. Slim-jims are
easy to read, and inexpensive to produce.

A fact sheet is printed on both front and back. They are cheap to
produce and the easiest to update often. It is an 8 1/2- by 11-
inch sheet of paper that is not folded but mailed flat in an
envelope. The advantages of the fact sheet are that you can
include more information as well as additional sheets of paper if
needed.

How to Get Past the Receptionist

Recently I heard from a woman who wanted to know how to get the
word out about her company without spending a ton of money. I
advised her to try using a direct mail letter, a classic way of
reaching a targeted group of people. She replied that she had
tried that, but was having difficulty getting past the
receptionists to the actual persons in charge. "The secretary
sends our letters straight to the trash and the manager never
sees them," she said.

Next I told her to try a combined letter and phone call. Send the
letter, then call the next week. Or call and say you're sending a
letter. The important thing is to keep trying.

She replied they had tried that, too. The phone calls never got
passed the receptionist.

Hmmm. These guys are tough, I said. In these situations go to the
next step. Put ads in the trade publications those managers read.
Once they know your name and benefits, it could be easier to get
past the front desk. Also, consider appearing on radio talk shows
as an expert guest. Or you could create an event and invite the
managers you are trying to reach.

Following these three steps often help you get past gatekeepers
and to the person who can approve a purchase.

Can't Think of What to Write? Pick a Word

Sometimes the most difficult part of writing is just getting
started. What might help? Pick a word or idea and begin "talking
on paper."

All you need to do is let go and let your thoughts take you where
they want to go. It does not really matter where you start; all
that matters is that you did start!

Put your pen on paper and start writing anything that comes to
mind. Don't let your critical voice take over. You're not allowed
to change anything, just write the first thing you think of.

Think of a blind date. It will probably be awkward, but you will
find SOMETHING to talk about. Writing is exactly the same.

I find that once you get started, the words start to help you.
The page will create its own rules helping you to know what to
write next.

Remember that good writing begins with a single word.

Direct Mail Copy That Sells!

There are a few ways to write direct mail copy that will create
more response. Through trying these techniques, your copy will be
more interesting, better read, and more effective in getting
sales.

Boasting takes a great deal of skill, but can dramatically help
increase response. If you feel confident as a writer, try this
method. Brag a little. Some of the most successful entrepreneurs
use this method. A few post their bank statement online. Make
sure that after you boast about your abilities you quickly turn
the focus to how you can help the reader.

Address the prospect's common complaint. Anticipate their
objection to your product. Answer the complaint
right at the beginning of your letter. The reader will be hooked!

Make sure that you avoid contradictions. Review your copy for
consistancy. If a customer reads statements that are
contradictory, they will question your credibility.
