There are a lot of experts telling you what and what not to do
with a press release. Most of it is excellent advice, but there
are a few insider tips they are missing.

Recently a PR expert wrote advising me to stop telling people to
use press releases. "The media is so busy that a press release is
the last thing they have time for," she said.

On the contrary, most media folks are constantly looking for good
stories and information. Most don't care how they get it. Even
though media gets too much mail, too many phone calls, and an
avalanche of email, they are always short of great stories.

Back when I did a radio show in San Francisco, a homeless guy
would tape his pencil-written essays to the front door of the
studio. Did I scan them for something I could use on the air? You
bet.

Another press release truism tells you not to call an editor and
ask if they received your press release. True, this is at the top
of many editors' pet peeve lists. However, nobody gets anywhere
in media without being persistent.

Media folks move up into prestigious organizations and high-
paying jobs by calling and emailing prospective bosses over and
over. Find a media pro with an impressive track record and you'll
likely find someone who is a real pest when shooting for a new
job.

Be persistent and be there when an editor, writer, producer, or
reporter finally decides they have a need for your story.

Differences Between Marketing Products and Services

About once a week I hear from someone who says "you always write
about how to market a product, but not a service." A few days
later I'll get a note from someone else "you only write about
marketing a service."

The truth is, there isn't much difference between marketing a
product and marketing a service. In both cases your main
objective should be to convince people you have benefits they
really want and need.

Most sales are based on emotion. We buy because the offer makes
us feel more secure, less hurried, more relaxed, or just plain
excited.

It's common knowledge that putting a photo of a product in an ad
or on a web site increases sales. Services can also benefit from
having a picture.

A photo of the owner or person performing the service builds
customer confidence. Even a simple shot of hands at work can give
a prospect an image to connect with your service--an important
mental step for many consumers.

Recently I asked Kevin Ammons how he built his massive downline
of 1,000 people. Kevin told me he did it almost entirely in chat
rooms on AOL.

I've heard others say this, too. One man told me getting new
customers this way is "like shooting fish in a barrel."

Kevin says the key is to first develop a friendly relationship
with prospects. You have to use the soft sell approach.

"People in general do not like being 'sold,' especially from
someone online they've never met. Though they can see you in chat
rooms, read your website, view posts on a bulletin board, you
will need to build a reputation with them."

Chat rooms, discussion boards, and other social media sites can
also serve as a great training tool for new distributors. "They
can watch the conversations that take place so they can duplicate
it in their own chat rooms," Kevin says.

It is important to appear in the chat room at the same time every
day or several days per week. Let visitors know what your chat
room schedule is. You can become the resident expert visitors and
regulars turn to.

Explore The Hunger

You've heard the advice sell the sizzle not the steak? Kent
Schrader says to take it a step further.

"Don't sell the steak. Don't even sell the sizzle. Explore the
HUNGER! " Kent says. Find where the customer is hurting and solve
that hurt.

Kent illustrates it like this: "If someone calls me at 3:00 in
the morning to tell me that because I am such a good friend, they
are giving me FOUR new tires, and they are letting me know the
tires are now in my driveway, I'd probably say 'thanks' but then
I'd be thinking, 'why the heck did he call at 3:00 am' before
drifting back to sleep."

"On the other hand, if the same friend called me to say he just
drove by and saw someone taking ONE of the tires off my car, I'd
probably thank him profusely, leap out of bed, and run to the
window before calling the police."

Most folks are motivated a lot more by a pressing problem or fear
of loss than by the chance for gain. Make your marketing explore
the customer's frustration and pain.

If you sell brand-name items or services of any kind, ask your
suppliers about getting co-op ad money.

Many companies will pay you a fee if you include their name,
logo, or promotional line in your advertising. Ad agencies are
notorious for not telling you about co-op and media reps
frequently never get around to it.

Keep Getting the Same Question?

One of the best gifts your customers can give you just happens to
be among the most annoying. From time to time you will notice
customer after customer asks the same question.

This happened to me when just about everyone who inquired about
my press release service wanted to know if they could approve the
release before it was sent to thousands of media.

Soon after that a new web page paragraph in bold red letters
proclaimed, "We send your release to you for your approval BEFORE
it goes to media." Sales jumped.

Watch for recurring questions. It's a sign there is an important
customer concern that isn't being covered in your marketing and
sales materials. Correcting the oversight can give you an
immediate boost.

Don't Ask Too Much

One of the most valuable things the web can do for business is
supply bushels of very precise data on who your customers are and
what they do.

In the past, businesses often had to guess about these things.
Even expensive, sophisticated research left big holes in what a
business knew about its customers.

Are we going overboard in our quest to know as much as possible
about our customers? Many shoppers think so.

It's a good idea to harvest some information about a customer
when they are placing an order, but don't take it too far.

Many people give up the purchase and click away if they are asked
to provide too much personal information.

This trend will only increase when consumers learn that the phone
number they provide is often turned over to a telemarketing firm.

For situations where you want a maximum number of leads, ask a
minimum number of questions. Often email address and a first name
(to personalize future email messages) is all that is needed.

Use Black and White to Get Attention

One of the biggest challenges you have with marketing is breaking
through the advertising clutter. We are all bombarded by
thousands of advertising messages every day.

It's very easy for prospects to tune out your marketing message.
It pays to be on the look-out for ways to break through the
clutter.

One method used in ads and signs is to put the entire ad in black
and white--black words on white paper with a black and white
photo. When all the other ads are in color, black and white can
make your ad stand out.

This strategy can also work for web sites.

Back before color was common in photos and film, producers
developed high standards and deep insight into methods for using
black and white effectively.

Are Complainers Typical?

Every business gets customers who complain about a product,
service, new look, price hike, change in policy, and dozens more.

Business owners and managers often become alarmed when someone
complains. They figure that a single complaint represents the
feelings of many people. If they get two people complaining about
the same thing, many are sure the entire customer base is
unhappy.

When you get complaints does it mean you made a mistake or it's
time to change a product or policy? Not necessarily.

Think carefully about whether the complaint is representative of
the feelings of an isolated individual or small group of
customers. You can't please everyone. You may be pleasing a large
group of customers (who you don't hear from) while the same
policy brings complaints from a few.

It's important to make this distinction before making changes in
response to a complaint.

"But that's the way it's done"

I'm starting to see a trend in Internet marketing that permeates
other media. It's what I call the "But that's the way it's done"
factor.

If you ask a TV producer why a serious moment has to be
interrupted by a one-liner, their answer will come out something
like "that's the way it's done."

If you ask a radio programmer why every station in America is
running contests, you'll get a weird look and an answer along the
lines of "well, that's the way it's done."

Now we're starting to see this principle applied to web sites.
Notice lately that a great many web sites are starting to look
the same?

Ask a web designer why there must be a gif logo, flash buttons,
jpeg photos, a complex shopping cart, and text in Arial or
Verdana in small print for every web site and you'll probably get
a "just the way it's done" answer.

Don't be afraid to break the mold and design your site, TV
commercial, or radio spot in an unusual way that perfectly fits
your goals. Your originality may be just what is needed to break
through to customers.

I got a note from a reader last week asking, "Why don't writers
mention Direct Mail as a good way to promote a web site?"

Good question. There are an increasing number of Internet
businesses that are turning to traditional sales letters sent
through the mail. It's a tried-and-true method that brings
results.

You can mail your web site announcement, new product release, or
price specials to as many people as you want without being
accused of spamming.

Check the catalog of mailing lists available from

Turn Visitors Into Buyers

One of the downsides of the Net is how hard it is to get visitors
to buy what you're selling. Typically 1% or fewer visitors buy.
The percentage of visitors that buy is called your "conversion
rate."

Imagine if Target or Sears got only got one buyer for every 1,000
people who came through the store. Because you don't have to
drive across town to get from one web site to the next, consumers
are far less likely feel committed to placing an order.

Increase your orders by showing visitors what a great VALUE your
product or service is. List lots of benefits the customer will
get when they buy. Tell them how your product or service will
make their lives better.

Put a link to your order page near the top of your sales copy and
another at the bottom. Make sure people always know where to
click at the moment they get the urge to buy.
