Building the Better Website

Why do some sites succeed where others flop? The answers are more
obvious than you think. There is never just one reason why a site
does not succeed. A combination of the right elements is what
determines your success.
So what are the right elements? Well, here are a few of them:
1. Speed - People are in a perpetual hurry, so don't make them
wait around for your site to load. The more technology advances,
the faster people expect your website to be. So remember to
compress your images and don't clutter up your site with
unnecessary elements. Minimize your load time by keeping graphics
small and don't overuse javascript, streaming audio/video, and
animation. I know this isn't the current "trend," but even folks
with high speed Internet are getting tired of waiting for the
giant Flash ad to load at the top of the page.
2. Targeting - Know your target market and be sure your site
caters to their needs. If your target market is teenagers, don't
design your site to look boring and corporate. If you're
targeting business professionals, use a clean, simple design and
keep it easy to navigate.
3. Payment Methods - Payment should be easy, no matter what
method your customers choose to use. Offer a variety of payment
methods. Also, you must accept credit cards. This is the cardinal
rule of Internet payments. These days that can be as simple
as signing up for a free PayPal merchant account.
4. Content - This is by far the most critical element of a good
site. Good content sells products. Does your copy convey the
message you wish to send? Does it make people want to buy? If
not, have a professional review your copy to ensure it is doing
its job.

Going Into Business

The first thing to consider when starting a business is, will
people actually pay money for your product or service? This is a
very important question that could save you a lot of time and
money.
I've had more than a few business ideas over the years that were
interesting to a lot of people, but nobody wanted to pay enough
for the product or service to make it profitable. You probably
won't earn enough from a $5 item to make the rent, unless you
have access to big mass advertising and sell thousands of it.
Secondly, you need to decide what your goal is. It is important
that your personal plan for life fits with your business plan.
Think about how many hours you want to work and how much
knowledge and experience you actually have in the business you
want to start. It is also good to consider how much money you
have on the line and if it is worth it to continiue your plan.
Keep your business small until you have it right. Don't start
hiring people you can't afford. Once you hire them you might end
up paying them out of your pocket if the business starts to
falter. Also, one of the biggest mistakes a small business can
make is to build an expensive office they don't need. Be sure
that you are focused on the right things.

As we experience a deep recession in many places, there are many
businesses that are in decline. Here are some ways to revive a
business that is on a down hill slide.
First, try cleaning up or adding decorative touch to your
business. This lets your customers and employees know that you
plan to be around for awhile. Maybe a new letterhead, or a new
couch in the reception room. Just painting the walls can have a
real impact on the spirit of the place. Even something small
could have a great effect.
Next, promote your business. Promote and advertise your best
items, the ones with the most appeal and good profits. You might
have to concentrate on these items for awhile untl you have a
direction planned out.
Figure out what your business is and focus on it! Decide which
area you want to place the most importance and carve out a
"niche" in the market.
Remember to identify yourself so the customer won't forget you.
It is important to have an attention-grabbing symbol or sign.

The 4 P’s of Marketing

Before you start marketing, there are a few things you have to
know--4 to be exact. They’re called the 4 P’s, and marketing
experts around the world consider these essential points before
putting any marketing concept into action.
Product - What is your product and how will you position it in
the market? How will it be packaged? Does it have unique
features and benefits? These are just a few of the questions you
must ask yourself to define your product for perfect marketing
placement.
Price - You have to decide on the amount you will charge for your
product, but this task is not as easy as you might think. You
must consider what your customer will pay, the price image you
want to maintain consistently, what your competition charges, and
much more.
Place - This includes position in the market, as well as how you
will distribute and place your product.
Promotion - Now we’re getting into the actual marketing of the
product. Promotion includes everything from advertising to
networking, newsletters to classified ads. Ask yourself which
vehicles of promotion will best serve your purposes.
Once you have used the 4 P’s to define your product, price, place
and promotion, you can start marketing. If your first attempt to
marketing the product doesn’t work the way you hoped, go back to
the 4 P’s and reevaluate until you find the marketing system that
works for you.

How to Make Your Ezine Ad Stand Out

People don’t read ezines for the ads, so it’s essential that you
make you ad stand out if you want readers to sit up and take
notice.
First of all, be sure you’re placing your ad in the right ezine,
one that it tightly targeted to the audience you’re trying to
reach. You can have the most eye-catching ad in the world, but if
you’re marketing to the wrong audience, you won’t sell a thing.
To make your ad stand out, you have to know the concerns of the
ezine readers. Your ad should let them know that your product or
service can solve those problems or concerns. Think of ads that
have successfully sold something to you. How did they make you
feel? Probably they convinced you that they could solve a
pressing problem, or make you feel different in some way, better,
richer, sexier or more loved.
You should address your audience’s concern in the headline of the
ad. This is where you really have to grab attention and give them
something they can identify with.
Also, be sure to make your ad skim-friendly. Most of your readers
will not read the ad word by word. They will skim it for the most
important points; so put those points in bold or caps or a
different color. Bullet points also work well pinpoint the
important parts.

Recently a supplier I have used for along time was bought
out by another company. Even though the new
organization provides the same service at the same price,
I'm disappointed. I'll miss the friendly help the original

How To Sell Health Products Online

Selling health products online is a bit different from selling
other kinds of products. Because you are touting something
that will directly affect a customer's health (their most
valuable possession), customers have to trust you.
Many sites fall short by leaving the owner out of the picture.
They promote the value of the product without telling us
about the person who stands behind the product.
That is the harder way to gain customer trust. It is a lot
easier to trust a person than a bottle. You will get a lot

Let Old Customers Bring New Business

We all know it's not easy luring in new customers. So what can
we do? Simply get your existing customers to buy from you again.
So how do you keep old customers coming back? Try offering the
service or product they have bought before, but this time with an
added incentive. You could not only design the web site, but also
promote it free for the first month.
You could also offer them an additional product or service that
compliments the one they already purchased. Try offering a
companion book, or a newsletter subscription on the same topic.
Each time you add a new product to your line, blast out
another email or direct mail campaign to your customer base
announcing your addition. Offer special pricing incentives to
show you appreciate past customers, calling it a "special thank
you for your business."

How To Get Testimonials

The most effective advertising strategy ever is to put
testimonials all over your marketing. The good comments
customers give you are worth their weight in gold.
All of us see so much advertising that we tend not to believe
much of it. If I say my press releases are great, not many
people are going to be impressed about it. However, if a
customer says Fox News showed up at her building and did
a full report on their products after receiving my release, a
lot of people will take note and remember what the
customer said.
But how do you get testimonials when you're first starting
out and don't yet have any customers? Get comments from
friends and people in your business. Very few customers (if
any) will notice the difference. In fact, a comment on your
pristine autoresponders from a known expert at
autoresponders.com might do more than anything to
convince prospects you've got quality goods.
Very few people will turn you down when you ask if you
can put their words on your marketing materials. Most are
flattered.
You can sweeten the offer by including their name, city, and
web site address along with the testimonial. Not only does
this help promote your customer, but people are more likely
to believe a testimonial is genuine if it carries the name and
location of the person who said it.

One of These Things is Not Like the Others

Did you know you learned the most important lesson you'll ever
learn about marketing when you were just a little boy or girl,
sitting in front of the television watching a giant yellow bird?
That's right. Big Bird taught you the same lesson you'd learn in
a college marketing course.
Can you think what it is? We learned so many lessons from Sesame
Street, it's hard to pick out the most important one. The lesson
I'm talking about is "One of these things is not like the
others." Big Bird taught us at an early age to look for patterns
and single out the unusual. And guess what? We all do it.
Everyone looks for the product that stands out from the others.
No matter how unique your product may be, it won't sell unless
you are able to let consumers know why the should take notice of
yours over all the hundreds or thousands of look-alikes.
To find the edge that differentiates your product or service from
the competition, try compiling a list of competitors' marketing
taglines and key messages. Group together the similar messages.
Now, find alternative market positions that may have been ignored
or missed by the competition.
Remember, even if your products are similar in every respect,
they don't have to sound that way in your marketing. Find
something new to say while your competitors are busy jumping on
each other's bandwagons.

Make Sure Your Web Site Is Right Before You Advertise

Recently a customer spent a pretty hefty sum of money to
promote his web site. I knew something was wrong when
he contacted me three weeks later saying he hadn't sold a
single product.
His site looked good. A professional designer had given it a
great look with slick graphics. Unfortunately, when I went
in search of the product he was advertising it took five or
six clicks to find it.
Here is what happened to prospects and why the site wasn't
selling anything:
1. The prospect sees the ad.
2. She clicks to the site.
3. She is greeted with a doorway page.
4. When she finds the link at the bottom of the doorway
page she is taken to a home page with very little information
on it.
5. If she clicks on the "home" link she gets the doorway
page again.
6. If she clicks on the "about us" link she gets the home
page she is already on.
7. One more click and she might find the product page with
the item she came looking for.
How many customers will look through page after page to
find the product or service you advertised? Not many.
Click rates go down dramatically after the first page.
Hardly anyone will click three levels deep.
Moral of the story: have your opening web page clearly
promote whatever you are advertising. Otherwise, your ad
dollars may be wasted.

Help Prospects Get Organized

Sometimes you get a prospect who seems interested in what
you are selling, but they disappear without making a
purchase.
I used to think these prospects didn't like the price, or
didn't really need the product, or maybe my sales method
turned them off. Now I know better. Many simply can't
get organized, can't clear the time to figure out what they
want to buy, or can't remember which business had what
they were looking at.
You can increase sales by helping prospects get organized.
Keep a list of people who have shown an interest in what
you sell (checking back through old phone messages or
email replies is great for this). Contact them again one day
later, one week later, even one month later.
Some top sales people keep notes after each contact with a
prospect. This gives them super organization they can use
to help the prospect get organized.
If the prospect is hedging, try to find out why. Is there a problem
standing in their way you can help them remove?
Many long-term customers stay with a company because the
representative helps take the work out of being organized.

The one thing that comes closest to a free ride in business is
brand name awareness. When people know your name,
they will buy from you.
Over and over when people are asked why they purchased
from a particular company, the answer is "I've heard of
them." Local and state politics prove this better than

every term for 40 years. Incumbents win their elections
overwhelmingly because people know their names.
Strive to get your company or product name in front of
people consistently. One ad may get their attention. Three
ads over weeks may hold their attention. Stop then and
people will soon forget about you.
