Marketing to Many Cultures

America used to be called "the melting pot" because it was
considered a place where many cultures came to exist together and
melt into each other. Today the more PC term for America is the
"salad bowl," implying that we exist together, but don't really
blend.

I would say we are somewhere in between; different cultures
affect each other, but maintain their own traits,
characteristics, and beliefs.

But in such a vastly diverse environment, how is a marketer to
reach such a varied audience?

For one thing, you have to understand that no ad, article, or
release is going to be appropriate for everyone. If you want to
reach out to multicultural markets, try a series of ads, each
focusing on a different audience. If that's too expensive, make
an effort to incorporate elements of what would appeal to
different cultures into an ad. But be careful not to go
overboard.

The most important thing to do before you try to reach
multicultural audiences is to understand them, just as you would
any target demographic. What do different cultures value? What do
they want? Don't rely on stereotypes and never make assumptions.
Educate yourself before you attempt any marketing.

Headlines--How to Say a Lot in a Few Words

What is the most important part of your ad? Well, consider the
fact that most people don't read ads, they glance at them or skim
over them. When they do this, they usually notice only one thing,
and that is what prompts them to read further.

The first thing people notice about your ad is the headline. That
means you have to say the most powerful, motivating thing you can
in the headline, a task that is made difficult by the fact that
you have to be brief and concise.

So what can you say in a few words that will catch the reader's
attention? Here are a few tips for how to say a lot with a
little:

*Speak directly to the reader by addressing them as "you."
Readers don't pay much attention until they feel that something
is addressing them directly.

*Offer something free in the headline. Then people will have to
read on to find out how to get this free something.

*Use statistics and specifics. For example, if you sold weight
loss supplements, your headline could read: Proven to Help 96% of
Users Lose Weight Permanently.

*Start with a testimonial in quotation marks. People don't always
want to hear what advertisers have to say, but they want to hear
what regular people have to say.

once a week, the quality will be WAY greater, and you will make

You'll probably make more money if you sell solo ads.
You can always promote your own things in your regular
newsletter. They usually sell better that way anyway.
On the other hand, a lot of people don't like solo ads.
So, your regular newsletter may pull better results if
you have a policy against solo ads.

email replaces the hard copy letter as the first point of
contact.

Do you have any expertise or advise you can share...
for example do you have any thoughts on length of message as
screens are often small. I am guessing read time is shorter, etc.
Does the 7 hits rule still apply?

A: Sarah,

Writing email sales letters is very much like writing a standard
letter for print. Use a headline, then a salutation, use bullets
to list your main features, connect those features with benefits.
The difference is your email can include a live clickable link to
an order page to get immediate impulse sales. These days, when
most people can read HTML email that looks like a web page, you
can put the order form right in the message.

Keep your first letter short. Then expand the length in later
letters. Three letters can do well, although seven is the
standard. Many use 10 and 20 letters, but that can be too much
for many prospects.

I'm not sure about the use of a PS. For a print letter, a PS a
good thing. Most people read the PS before they read the rest of
the letter. Things don't work quite that way for email. People
start at the top and read, scrolling to the bottom. Often the PS
in an email doesn't get read.

What Your Website Color Scheme Says to Visitors

We are constantly surrounded by color. Because our world is so
saturated with thousands of hues, we don't consciously notice the
effects different colors have on us. But even if we don't notice
it, color changes our mood, our appetite, our sleep patters, even
our metabolism.

That is why it is so important to carefully plan the color scheme
of your website. Not only does color influence the way people
feel when they visit your website, but it also determines whether
your site will be seen as professional or amateur, appropriate or
off-key.

There is an almost endless supply of color choices for the web,
but don't get carried away. Just because you like 20 different
colors doesn't mean they should all be incorporated into your
site. Choose only a few--three is probably enough--and go from
there.

Also, remember to pick hues that complement each other. Use a
background that contrasts with the color of your text. The common
choice is black text on a white background. If you have a lot of
text for visitors to read, this will be the easiest on their
eyes. Never pair a light background and a light text--unless you
want your visitors to go blind, that is.

Consider the subtle, emotional effects your color scheme will
have on visitors. Red stimulates metabolism and makes people
hungry. Blues and greens promote serenity, calm, peace, and
order. Yellow is cheerful and usually improves a person's mood.

Ask yourself who your audience is. If you are designing the site
for children, reds and yellows are good choices. Many shades of
blue exude professionalism, wealth and power, but not all. If you
want to create corporate style identity, steer clear of
sentimental blues, like cornflower blue. If you are going for a
look that appeals to a nature and outdoors group, go for earth
tones like brown and green.

With today's multiple technologies, you must use an inclusive
term or electronic media. Because when you say camera

to have news to write about, but it's even better if you have

*Involve a local or national celebrity. They are always on the

Q: Kevin,

Can you recommend a hosting service that a person can
use to set up an e-commerce website that can allow
paypal checkout? I looked into Yahoo, but it seems to
cost a lot, has drawbacks for the paypal check out,
and more over, they don't index you with the search
engine. I need something very affordable, because my
budget is almost nothing.

My ebay store, and Auctionwatch (Vendio) store front
seems to pay off, but in a small way. I do need a real
website, though, something I can afford. Any good
suggestions?

Usually people who get commissions are more concerned about
the total amount of money they get than the percentage.
In some cases, 2% to 5% can add up to a nice check.
Also look at what the competition or industry standard is
(if there is one.) Some online businesses have to pay to
50% commissions and more, but traditional sales positions
usually have commissions in the 3% to 15% range.

What to Look for in a Banner Exchange Program

One of the most popular promotion tools on the Internet today is
banner exchange. And what's even better is, IT'S FREE! That's
something everyone likes to hear.

Not only is the price right for banner exchange, but it's also
fairly easy to do. You just paste a relative HTML code into your
website and upload your banner to exchange.

But how do you choose the best banner exchange program? Here are
a few criteria to help you find the best one for you:

1. Banner Exchange Ratio - Not all banner exchange programs have
the same network display ratio. They can vary from 1:1 to 5:1,
but the average ratio is 2:1.

2. Banner Size - There are many banner sizes, ranging from 88x31
px to skyscraper banners at 120x600 px. However, the most popular
size is 468x60 px. Some programs offer a variety of banner sizes
and some keep to the standard. If you want to display a variety
of sizes, choose a program that has several options.

3. Targeted Banner Display - Many networks do not offer targeted
banner exchange, so your banner could end up on a site with
irrelevant content. Choose a program that offers targeting by
category.

4. Tracking and Reporting - Never use a banner exchange program
that doesn't offer online tracking. Without this feature, you
have no way to know if your banner exchange is effective.

for a project. His bid was for $70 per hour, which was fair
considering his experience and work quality. However, he was
bidding against an inexperienced teenager working out of his
basement, willing to charge only $10 an hour.

The company offering the project actually considered basement boy
with his dirt-cheap rates. That is, until my friend pointed out
that they would get exactly what they paid for, and when their
end product turned out to be junk, they could come to him and pay
his rates to do it over again.

The company realized that choosing Mr. $10 an hour posed certain
risks, and that they might end up paying even more if they went
with him. In the end, my friend won the bidding war, even though
his rates were 7X his competitor's.

What is the lesson to be learned here? Offer the better product
and most people will have enough sense to pay the price you ask.

Get Media Coverage When You Make a Difference

the newspaper. We don't have anything meriting an earth-shaking
headline. We don't plan new skyscrapers, go under laying off
thousands, or make a big splash on Wall Street.

But there are important ways a small business can get covered by
the press. The most effective way is to do something that makes
a difference in the lives of the audience.

For example, the print shop that spearheads a local campaign to
buy uniforms for the city's little league teams could easily find
themselves the subject of a newspaper article.

The financial advisor who organizes a watch group in a troubled
neighborhood can get coverage.

One client of mine was interviewed by 10 radio stations when she
sent a press release out about her novel security device that
helps women protect themselves.

This week we worked with a Manhattan therapist who helps
undeserved groups get counseling when their friends and families
are hit by serious illness. She very likely will find it's quite
easy to get media to cover her project.

It's a simple principle that usually works wonders. Make a

How Often to Send Out Your Newsletter

You'll know if you're sending your newsletter out too often if
your subscribers start unsubscribing. But hey, you don't want to
let it get to that point. You want to send out your newsletter
often enough that subscribers won't forget about you, but not so
often that they say, "Enough already!"

To find out just how often you should send out your newsletter,
you could pole your subscribers, do some testing, or ask those
who unsubscribe why they decided to do so.

Or, you could just follow these simple guidelines:

*Send your newsletter out at the very least every other month,
and that's stretching it. You don't want people to have to think
about who you are. They subscribed to your newsletter, so they
wanted it in the first place. But if you wait too long between
mailings, they'll forget why they wanted it.

*Don't pester your subscribers with mailings more often than once
a week. Even if your newsletter is packed with things your
subscribers want to know, most of them won't have time to read
your newsletter more than once a week, so they will either delete
or unsubscribe, even if they like your newsletter.

Keep Your Offer Simple

When things get complicated, customers bolt.

Have you ever been to a website that makes an offer, then
compounds it with stipulations, overwhelming you with complicated
wording and conditions? If so, you probably didn't stay there
long.

On the web, people are always a little more wary of the products
and offers. They can't see or touch them, so they have to rely on
the information you provide to judge whether or not they want
what you have to offer.

But things like complicated wording, too many instructions, too
many steps, etc. will all make potential customers suspicious.
They'll wonder what you're trying to hide in all those
unnecessary words and steps.

Or, those potential customers will simply tire of sorting through
all the instructions and stipulations associated with your offer.
After all, they can always find another site that won't require
them to decipher a code to get what they want.

Use simple wording, short sentences, and brief paragraphs to keep
the information you need to convey concise, easy-to-read, and
simple to understand. And if you offer a bonus, don't require
potential customers to jump through hoops to get it.
