"But We Tried Everything!"

Occasionally I meet a business that has done a TON of marketing
but still isn't selling much. It isn't that they haven't tried.
The list of marketing they attempted can be staggering.

If thousands and millions of prospects are learning about the
product or service, why aren't any of them buying?

Here are some common reasons even well-promoted products don't
sell.

There isn't any real market for the product. It may seem like a
great idea, but nobody wants it--at least, not yet.

Customers don't think your business is qualified to sell the
product. One man knew his medium-sized business could supply the
needs of major customers, but they didn't buy until his company
grew into a big corporation. "We could have served them just as
well before, but they wouldn't buy because they thought we
weren't big enough."

Your advertising isn't targeted to the right market. This is
probably the most common problem. A company markets with a media
that reaches a mass audience (like TV or daily newspapers) but
reaches too few of their customers who belong to a specific
group.

Tightly targeted media don't always reach the audience they claim
to reach. Try running a test first to see if you get results
before spending big bucks.

Finding a Niche That REALLY Wants What You Sell.

One of the quickest ways to make a business successful is to
focus on a small group of people who REALLY want a product or
service. Because they aren't the biggest group of customers, the
specialized product or service probably isn't going to be
available at Walmart.

In fact, many of the customers in your group may not know where
they can get what they want. When you show up, specializing in
satisfying their demands and giving these customers exactly what
they've had such a hard time finding, you get an enthusiastic
group of long term buyers.

Let me give you an example. I recently spent a few days in
Southwest Texas. It's deep in the heart of ranch country. Men and
boys still wear cowboy hats just as they have for 150 years. It's
not the largest group in the world, but these guys really WANT
their cowboy hats.

Cory and Victoria noticed that it was hard to find a store that
stocked many cowboy hats. Their solution was to open an entire
store specializing in them. You can get any kind of hat, styled
any way, for any sized head.

For many customers their store is regarded as an answer to a

to say to the business, in order to get them to sell and sign my

Call the radio station and ask to talk with someone
in the "sales department." Be ready to tell them
what time of day you want to advertise and what your
overall budget is. The sales person will help you figure
out how many ads you can afford, the production of your
commercial, and the scheduling of your spots. Keep in mind
the price of spots (the radio term for commercials) can
vary depending on the client, how much they are buying,
and when they place their order. Price is usually negotiable.

How Business Buyers are Different From Consumers

Most of the advertising and marketing we see is directed toward
consumers. Yet, much of the money spent around the world is for
products and services purchased by businesses. For a very long
time, business-to-business transactions made up the lion's share
of Internet purchases.

Consumers don't necessarily NEED your product or service. If

What to Put in Your Autoresponders

Free autoresponders are everywhere. And we've all heard about how
they are a powerful tool for giving you follow-up selling with no
effort. After all, most customers won't buy the first time. They
only buy when you remind them to buy

Try writing an information "article" to put in your
autoresponder. I put article in quotations because it doesn't
have to be anything like a regular article. One man does well
with a series of top 10 lists. Top ten ways to get on search
engines; top ten ways to get visitors to your order form. It
could just as easily be Top Ten Ways to Improve The Look of Your
Yard.

They key is to zero in on a specific, precise audience of people
who are deeply interested in a particular issue.

Your autoresponder article can simply offer news about a new
project or service. Explain why you developed it, how it works,
quote folks who are using it, what benefit it brings, and how the
autoresponder reader can get a special deal.

Courses are also good. People love to get a seven lesson course
on a popular topic. It can be delivered to them each day, or
every other day, or even once a week. This can keep you on their
mind for days, weeks, even months--until the sale comes in.

There is a way to get free radio advertising. Disc jockeys love
to eat, and it can get pretty lonely at the station. If you are
in the food service business, i.e. a resteraunt, take the disc
jockey food. I'm a personal chef, and one morning as I was
listening to my favorite radio station, the disc jockey mentioned
that he gets mighty hungry in the morning since he's usually at
the station by 4:00 A.M. So, I took him and his staff breakfast
the following morning and I got about 5 free minutes on the air
talking about my personal chef business. Needless to say, my
phone was ringing off the hook before I got home. So, any
business that perhaps has a unique service or product, offer it
to the disc jockey for FREE.

You're absolutely right!! The best way to get a mention or even
a free live ad straight from the DJ's lips is to bring them free
food. Anything from home baked goodies to a meal from
a restaurant to a box of donuts. It all works wonders. And
you're right on target going very early. The "all-night" guy is
most likely to let you in and the "morning guys" who come
around 5am usually get there without having had breakfast.

Put Your Offer Near the Beginning

Ever get a sales letter or email that you can tell is selling
something, but you have to read most of the letter to find out
what they're selling? If you read all the way to the end you are
one of the few. Most people lose interest after the first few
paragraphs.

Increase the effectiveness of your sales copy by putting your
offer near the beginning. Tell people what you are selling, why
they need it, and (in most cases) what it costs.

Prospects should have a good general grasp of your offer by the
second or third paragraph.

This strategy not only works for sales letters but also for radio
and TV commercials, even for voice mail messages.

Feel free to take several pages to go through your entire offer.
Long sales copy can be very effective and certainly has its
place. Briefly outline your offer near the beginning, then come

Q: Kevin,

Recently I read an article that talked about a unique way to
get low-cost or possibly free advertising on a cable station.
I don't recall the source, but the gist of it is that there is
a policy or regulation for a certain type of advertising that
the station director won't offer up front, but when he or she is
pressed by someone who knows about the existence of this policy
or regulation the director will have to admit its existence and
thus will have to offer it as an advertising alternative as well.

Do you know of any special kind of advertising rate or policy
that must be offered by cable TV stations?

Good to hear from you. The article might have been referring
to public access on cable TV. Some cities have it written into
their contract with the cable firm that the cable station must
offer a channel that lets people from the community produce their
own shows (Wayne's World was based on this). Some also have a
public service announcement channel.

I sometimes see articles on how to get free ads on radio. I spent
21 years in radio and never saw anybody give away free ads. I
don't think anybody in TV gives away free ads either. So public
access is probably your best bet.

on your site are getting the most attention. You might want to
make that popular page or info easier for people to get to, by
rearranging links or deleting or deemphasizing material people
don't seem to care as much about. You can also see where
important info is getting missed. In those cases you can make the
link bigger, bolder, or put it closer to the top of the home
page.

Is This a Good Time to Advertise?

We're hearing a lot these days about a downturn in the economy.
Usually, when the headlines get gloomy, many businesses stop
advertising. This can be a golden time for those of us who know
better.

Media large and small have no choice but to reduce ad rates when
businesses start to get conservative with their marketing. Watch
for radio stations, TV and cable outlets, newsletters, and even
some ezines to continue lowering ad prices.

Not only can you afford to buy more ads, your ad will have less
competition. When other businesses stay away, your ad doesn't
have to work as had to get attention in sales.

And now the really good news. Experts tell me that even though
most people believe the economy is cooling, it isn't influencing
their buying. Online sales are growing at double digit rates.
Forrester says dollars spent on the Net will jump $716 billion
this year. And that is with 90 percent of sales still going to
traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

Gloomy economic projections may reverse themselves in the months
ahead. In the meantime, this is a great time to advertise!

If Your Advertising isn't Working....it May Be the Product

I've seen some good folks pour a trundle of money into
advertising products and services, only to come up empty handed.
"The ads didn't work!" they said in exasperation.

If you try good targeted advertising, you keep at it for a while,
and yet nothing sells, step back. First take a look at your ad,
then at your product.

A product that is only slightly different from many other
products probably won't pass the "just noticeable difference
test." That is where YOU notice the difference, but it's not
different enough for customers to notice (I wrote an article on

Price is also an important factor. If what you're selling could
also be found at Walmart, or Staples, or Amazon.com at a cheaper
price, your product or service had better offer a whole lot more
to support a higher price.

Finally, your product or service may be too new--people just
don't understand it--or it solves a need few people recognize
they have.

No question there are some good search engine experts out
there, but the keyword strategy is probably not as powerful
as it once was. These days the SEO guys are focusing on
link popularity...how many good sites have links to yours.

My understanding (though I'm not a lawyer) is new national spam
law says you have to give people a real way to get off your list
--- no phony email addresses or unsubscribe links that don't
work. It also says things that have been the law forever...like
don't try to con people or send them pornography they don't want.

Most ezines are in compliance already, and shouldn't have a
problem. Hopefully they will go after the big spammers who break
all the rules. That's what these laws really seem to be about.

How to Headline Your Business for Success

Believe it or not, a bad title or headline will turn your
prospects away quicker than just about anything else. When you're
trying to promote, you need people to stick around long enough to
hear your sales pitch, and a bad article title or sales letter
headline will turn people off before they even realize it.

Your title or headline is your very first opportunity to make an
impression on your prospects. If that impression is a positive,
informative, creative, or exciting one, you're off to a very good
start. Similarly, if that first impression is boring, worn-out,
or confusing, your prospects probably won't even get beyond the
first line.

When writing titles or headlines, think about your audience. No
matter who they are, titles should flow from the lips easily, and
give readers some idea of what they'll learn by reading on. At
the same time, they should be short enough to be memorable.

Beyond being clear and informative in your title, there are a few
enhancements you can use. Remember when you learned about rhyme
in elementary school? Well, rhyme is very good creative tool for
writing zippy headlines and titles. A rhyming title is catchy and
fun, almost compelling your audience to keep reading.

Alliteration is another great way to dress up a plain-jane title.
Alliteration is the repetition of a particular consonant sound at
the beginning, end, or middle of two or more words (i.e. terrific
titles). An alliterative title is easy to say, easy to remember,
and just plain fun to read.

A good title or headline gives your audience the idea that your
article, sales letter, or other copy is going to be a fun,
entertaining, or informative read, which is an absolute necessity
if you want your first impression to lead to a second chance.

Q: Kevin,

I have been a art licensing agent for almost 30 years . Having
semi-retired early I wanted to create a business selling
information so I developed a 6 lesson course to artists who want
to license work to manufacturers. This is the selling of
reproduction rights to greetings card print and poster
publishers as well as for other products. Think of Mary
Engelbreit, Thomas Kinkade etc.

I tried advertising in art magazines but the meager replies and
high costs made it unprofitable. I then turned to egroups for
artists and whilst I got reasonable responses the conversion rate
is still really poor. I ve tried new copy but nothing seems to
work.

Those who buy the course at $139 love it and I get great

My questions are 1) I need to find a way to get more enquiries
direct from artists 2) I need to convert more enquiries to
sales.

I don t mind investing a little more into copyrighting.

Any advice would be welcome.

Good to hear from you. Your own email newsletter would work very
well in this situation. Once or twice a month you could put out
a simple email that gives a few tips or discusses an issue
concerning art licensing. No doubt you would eventually have a
lot of artists on your list and a continuing source of steady
sales. Maybe the best way to go about this would be to create a
free report that goes for several "lessons." Then send your
newsletter to people who have subscribed to your free report.
http://aweber.com has a great system for doing this (I've used it
for years with terrific results).

I think 300 words of copy on your opening page would really help
get people clicking inside your site. Often the problem isn't
with the advertising, but getting folks to stick around and read
once they find you.

Seeing as how you probably have a lot of contact with releases,
may I ask you a question? Have you ever found that releases with
a negative or scary title and message get more responses than a
positive or neutral announcement?

I've only had one experience that leads me to this thought. What
is your take on it?

public. Many media insist on at least one scary story per
newscast or issue. It's the old truism that bad news travels

I'm starting my first direct mail campaign. I have inkjet
mailers which I hope will return to me full. I'm sending them
out to lists of environmental agency donors and home business
opportunity buyers. I also want to send some out to new small
businesses and Christian schools because it can be a fundraiser.

I don't know if my envelope on the outside is going to say "free
inkjet mailer inside" or if it's going to say "new fundraiser
idea" inside. I may also customize the envelope but I don't know
if I wan to say more than that. There will be an insert on the
inside that will explain details.

Do you have articles on your web site describing what's good for
these sorts of programs? I'm concerned about how much or how
little to put on the outside of the envelope and about getting
too detailed with my insert.

Your plan is very good. Get the Chamber list first and test out
your sales letter and envelope. "Free inkjet mailer inside"
would be a great teaser for the envelope. Make your letter quick
to read and don't leave too much mystery about what you're
offering. Once you try all that, you may want to purchase
mailing lists (or rent them). Look for "direct mail" in your
Yellow Pages to find local mailing list brokers.
