Brochure With a Pocket

One of the problems with brochures is they go out of date
rather quickly. You can spend a lot of money to get a great
looking brochure designed and printed, then realize six
months later that much of the information is no longer
accurate.

I have tossed out boxes of brochures because our industry
had moved beyond what the brochure promised. This is a
particular problem if you are in a technical field where
things change quickly.

One good solution is to create a brochure with a pocket on
the last page. You can stuff updated sheets of information
in the pocket. Changing prices, new developments, even
your new location can all be included in the update sheet for
the pocket.

The rest of the brochure can give information that doesn't
change often. You can cover your company history, some
of the key people in your organization, why your product or
service saves time and money, and tips for smartly using
your product.

Another way to make brochures go further in quickly
changing times is to avoid the brochure all together.
Instead, print your information on both sides of a single
sheet of paper. Use higher quality paper, maybe even two
colors of ink (red for the headline, black for the copy) to
make your one sheet look nicer than a flyer.

Great Time to Buy Banner Ads

There isn't as much money going into banner advertising as
their used to be. Many of the big Internet companies that
were putting millions into banners aren't around any more.

Banner prices have dropped dramatically. A couple of years
ago you could pay $35 per thousand prospects who saw
your banner. This year you can get a thousands
"impressions" for as little as two or three dollars.

This may be your best time ever to load up on banners ads
without spending a fortune. Banners don't get the incredible
40 percent response they sometimes got in the mid-90's.
Response rates are now reported in the .1 to .5 range. A
good targeted banner can pull a bit better.

While you won't get a landslide of sales from most banner
buys, you can still get respectable results. Banners compare
favorably to the response rates radio, TV, newspapers, and
direct mail generally pull. Results usually get better when
your banner has been up for several weeks or months. Only
20 to 40 percent of sales come during the first month.

Animated banners get more attention than static ones. Try
to keep your graphics simple so the banner will load quickly
for the 80 percent of users who still have slow dial-up
access.

Q: Kevin,

I have an e-newsletter called Streams of Income where I give tips
on running an Internet business. My question is, each issue I try
to give new programs that are good and report programs that are
scams. Should I just rotate opportunities each issue or only
include a few each time? I generally introdcue 5 or 6
opportunites each issue which is every other or third day. Is
that to many opportunities?

I don't get many takers, but I have only had a newletter for 2
1/2 months now and already 1005 people have opted in to read it.

I must be doing somthing good to keep them as subscribers--but
they won't sign up for the business opportunites.

Any idea how to resolve it so I get more sign-ups?

I agree you're doing something right. 1005 subscribers in less
than 3 months is very good. You might do better to include
around 3 opportunities in each issue. It may take more time for
people to start to completely trust your information and sign up
for the opportunities. Keep the good information coming and it
will happen.

to professionals: "You may find it is best not to sell them, but
to help the customer for a fee. The slight difference in
attitude can get the sale."

Can you give examples of this? I am into b2b selling and I
stink! If there are ways to "help for a fee" please give
examples.

Good to hear from you. This has to do with selling a product.
Instead of selling the product, sell a service that includes the
product. Sort of like somebody selling car wax saying "for $$
I'll wax your car and include the wax." Basically it removes the
work of having to implement the product.

The Top Four Kinds of Ads

Most of us tend to use the same kind of ad over and over.
If your ad is pulling lots of sales, stay with it. But if
results aren't quite what you're looking for, try switching to
one of these top four types of ads.

1. Your ad can simply work to build your company's image.
Most of the banner ads big corporations have around the
Net are designed to do nothing more than familiarize lots of
people with the company name. A big chunk of the ads on
network TV do the same thing. And that's not bad. Most
customers buy from a company they have heard of.

2. Your ad can work to build awareness for a particular
product or service you offer. I often write articles on press
releases just so I can make people aware that we offer a
press release writing and distribution service. An ad
promoting awareness for a product can work especially well
if you place the ad in an industry or special interest
publication that has readers who would consider your
product a big deal.

3. Have your ad pull in interested prospects. Instead of
having the ad do the selling, simply get lots of leads. Sell to
them using other methods like phone calls, personal visits, a
sales letter, or via email. Offer a free consultation, sample,
or report.

4. Finally, your ad can make the sale all by itself. Be sure
to include the price and directions on how to buy. Make
sure your ad asks for the sale. "Get it now!" gives a lot of
prospects the permission they seem to need to make a
purchase.

How to Get the Appointment

Many businesses and professionals make most of their sales
by making an appointment for a personal meeting with the
prospect. Here are some ways to get the appointment set
up with a quick phone call.

Start by selling the appointment rather than the product or
service. Don't try to sell the product over the phone. Take
things one at a time. Get the appointment set up on the
phone, then sell your product or service during the meeting.

Stay away from questions that can be answered with a yes
or no. If you give the prospect a chance to say no and
avoid the meeting most will. Instead, ask questions that
force a positive answer. "Which would be better to meet,
Wednesday or Thursday?"

When a prospect says she isn't convinced your service or
product is worth her time, ask for her help. "What would
you have to hear from me to be convinced I can do what I
say?"

You may find it is best not to sell them, but to help the
customer for a fee. The slight difference in attitude can get
the sale.

Just remember that for everyone who's had trouble with Paypal,
there are hundreds more who've never had a problem. If you
choose not to use it, Yahoo has a service called Yahoo PayDirect
that works in a similar way. It's growing in popularity and
widely used on Ebay. You can find it at
http://paydirect.yahoo.com. I'm not sure, but there may be a
minimal service charge.

Finding a Niche That REALLY Wants What You Sell.

One of the quickest ways to make a business successful is to
focus on a small group of people who REALLY want a product or
service. Because they aren’t the biggest group of customers, the
specialized product or service probably isn’t going to be
available at Walmart.

In fact, many of the customers in your group may not know where
they can get what they want. When you show up, specializing in
satisfying their demands and giving these customers exactly what
they’ve had such a hard time finding, you get an enthusiastic
group of long term buyers.

Let me give you an example. I recently spent a few days in
Southwest Texas. It’s deep in the heart of ranch country. Men and
boys still wear cowboy hats just as they have for 150 years. It’s
not the largest group in the world, but these guys really WANT
their cowboy hats.

stocked many cowboy hats. Their solution was to open an entire

Short Paragraphs Energize Your Writing

Here's a very simple idea that works wonders for any kind of
writing.

Keep your paragraphs SHORT. Sales copy should rarely use
paragraphs longer than three sentences. One and two sentence
paragraphs work great.

Why? Most readers are in a big hurry. Long paragraphs look
intimidating and hard to read. Short chunks of copy separated by
white space immediately say "get this information fast."

Use the short paragraphs strategy for web copy, salesletters, and
email messages.

Recently an editor of a major national magazine told me he favors
articles with two and three sentence paragraphs. The look of the
article is almost as important as what it is about.

one of the very best ways to promote a small business online.

But We Tried Everything!

Occasionally I meet a business that has done a TON of marketing
but still isn't selling much. It isn't that they haven't tried.
The list of marketing they attempted can be staggering.

If thousands and millions of prospects are learning about the
product or service, why aren't any of them buying?

Here are some common reasons even well-promoted products don't
sell.

There isn't any real market for the product. It may seem like a
great idea, but nobody wants it--at least, not yet.

Customers don't think your business is qualified to sell the
product. One man knew his medium-sized business could supply the
needs of major customers, but they didn't buy until his company
grew into a big corporation. "We could have served them just as
well before, but they wouldn't buy because they thought we
weren't big enough."

Your advertising isn't targeted to the right market. This is
probably the most common problem. A company markets with a media
that reaches a mass audience (like TV or daily newspapers) but
reaches too few of their customers who belong to a specific
group.

Tightly targeted media don't always reach the audience they claim
to reach. Try running a test first to see if you get results
before spending big bucks.

Smaller Mailing Lists

We're starting to see fewer BIG email lists. Many of thebig
distribution e-zines got their start a few years ago when few
people complained about spam.

Some of the first e-zines were sent to lists of email addresses
pulled from newsgroups. If the person didn't ask to be removed,
they continued to receive the newsletter. Others, myself
included, added the address of anyone who contacted them.

Today those strategies will get you accused of spamming and
you'll be kicked off your ISP by noon. As a result, most mailing
lists are smaller. Many fine ezines have only a few thousand
subscribers. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Mailing
lists are now more focused and targeted on specific interests and
groups of people. This more targeted marketing gets much better
results.

Get big results today by combining smaller email lists. Find
several ezines that closely target your best customers. Expect to
pay $10 per 1,000 subscribers. Find three to five ezines you can
advertise in on a regular basis.

Q: Kevin,

I am thinking of putting together an infomercial for a product.
I somewhat see the value in working with an agency to help put
me on the right broadcast tv stations for the right price, in the
right area, because broadcast tv is more fragmented and
localized. But, I am not sure I see the value in an ad agency in
helping me make Cable TV buys. I believe product will work well
on cable tv, and think I should be able to buy the cable tv media
without the help of an ad agency. Is there a consortium or group
that can help with a cable tv buy? Or is it actually as
fragmented as broadcast tv?

one of the big cable "chains" and work out a national buy.

cable shows. You can go national for less than advertising prime
time on local broadcast TV.
