Market With Public Speaking

Giving talks and lectures is a great way to build your
reputation and get your name around. Most lectures are given at
lunch or dinner meetings, trade associations, professional
societies, or for civic, community, and business groups. The
best place to speak is anywhere that potential clients may be
attending.

The topic you choose to speak on should be directly related to
your business. It should not be a sales pitch for your services,
however. Your lecture should provide the audience with
interesting and useful information on the topic. By giving the
audience good advice, you are considered an expert in your field.

Don't feel that your lecture must be entertaining or funny. It
is more important that your presentation be clear and
informative. Just be yourself and speak in a relaxed, natural
manner.

Most presentations are around fifteen to thirty minutes long,
and then with extra time for questions and answers. Practice
your speech at home to make sure that it fits in the time that
you have. Audiences hate it when speakers run over the time
limit.

Public speaking allows you to make contact with people on a more

Getting Over Shyness

Most people admit they are at least a little bit shy, especially
when it comes to selling.

The most important element in getting over shyness is not caring
what others think about you. Often, people that are shy are
afraid to take risks because they don't want to be rejected by
someone else. If you never take any chances, how will you ever
build a relationship with anyone? Don't worry about what others
think of you. As Ann Landers has pointed out for years, most
folks are too worried about themselves to worry about you. It
is more important how you feel about yourself.

Try doing something that gets you around people, even though you
don't want to be. The more time you spend around people, the
less shy you will become. Start out by being around people who
think like you. You will feel more comfortable if you are with
those you can relate to. Later, you can gradually become
comfortable with all kinds of people.

Think about what makes you shy. Are you afraid that people
don't think you're good enough? Or maybe that you will "stumble
around" when you speak to them? If you can figure out exactly
what it is that you're afraid of, you can begin to do something
about it. You might find that what you were worried about
doesn't really exist at all.

I am a magazine owner in Tucson, Arizona. Recently, a radio
station offered me to buy one hour a day so we can have our own
radio show. They offer me the 6 to 7 pm hour. Do you think this
is really "prime time?" This is a "Christian" station, spanish
speaking...the radio show will be in spanish.

Years ago "afternoon drive time" was 2pm to 6pm. These days
people work longer hours and commute later, so afternoon drive
now goes to 7pm. For most radio audiences, that would be prime
time or at least medium-prime time. It would be a good idea to

Come Off Well in Interviews

An interview is really marketing yourself. During an interview,
everything is important. The way you look, act, and talk can all
determine whether you get the job. Here are a few basic tips
that can help you do your best in an interview.

Make sure that you are on time! If you aren't on time for your
interview, how will you meet your deadlines on the job? Being on
time makes an impression on your prospective employer even before
you begin the interview.

It is important to look professional. Dress in business clothes
and make sure that you're well groomed. Besides being on time,
your appearance makes a strong first impression You might ruin
your chances of getting the job by dressing too casually.

Remember to bring samples of your work in a portfolio. In
addition, carry a file folder filled with other things you might
need: copies of your resume, letters of recommendation, reprints
of things you have written, and additional samples of your work.
It is good to have this items ready in case the interviewer
wishes to see them.

Try to show how you can solve problems your potential boss is
struggling with.

Above all, listen! Don't have a memorized "sales pitch". When
asked a question, listen and then give the best answer you can.
It is good to keep your answers brief and to the point. When
"babbling" starts you can easily say the wrong thing. Let the
interview do most of the talking.

Successful Service Selling

In order to successfully sell your product or service, your goal
should be to win clients, not assignments. Your income will grow
larger if you have regular clients who keep coming back.

Go out of your way to please your clients and do a good job for
them. No matter how busy or successful you are, it is important
to come across as someone who is helpful, not someone who is
"snobby."

There have been more than a few cases where we had to bend over
backward for a somewhat difficult client. Later the customer
went on to recommend us to many others, obviously impressed that
we made the effort.

Build personal relationships with as many people as you can. Even
people that you might consider unimportant could someday have a
major say over whether you are hired. Try to participate in
client activities. Make sure that you say hello to your clients
at conferences and other events in your industry.

Remember, clients have the power. Never be rude or lose your
temper. Always try to be patient, courteous, and friendly.
Clients can choose not to continue working with you at any time,
for any reason, or sometimes for no reason at all.

Is it a good idea to resubmit your website to the major search
engines every 4 weeks? Should you submit your site to Yahoo and
Google continually? Will this upset the people at these sites or

Good to hear from you. Experts differ on this and search engines
are constantly changing. These days Google checks back
automatically. If you frequently change content on your site
(especially your home page), Google will make a point of coming
back more often. Some of the big news sites that change
headlines constantly get visited by Google several times a day.
Other active sites get a visit once a week, etc.

The simple answer to this question is that you can never be 100%
sure. Media moods, activity on the newswire, and the kind of
business you're trying to promote all play a part.

You can increase your chances of exposure by making sure your
release is of interest to the public (it really must be
newsworthy or at least interesting), and sending it to the right
people (i.e. local papers are always more interested in local
stories). Whatever you do, make sure the service you use (even
yourself) has specific names of editors they send releases to, so
your release doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

Keywords can be tricky. Sites often discover that people don't
search for them with the keywords they expected. Instead of
searching for "sports equipment" they search for "football
supplies." Rather than typing in "CPA" they type "bookkeeping
help."

Think of all the different ways people describe what you do. Use
the same words and phrases you hear many of your customers use.

Big companies buy access to a database of keywords supplied by
search engines. You can get similar results with programs that
check the effectiveness of your search terms.

Develop Several Versions of Your Story

One of the best simple ways to promote yourself and your business
is to tell your story. Tell your story to everyone who listens.

I don't mean launch into a 45-minute saga starting with what
happened in the first grade. There may be instances where you'll
need that (like when the writer of your biography calls), but
mostly you'll need shorter versions of your story.

1. Have a one-line version for people who casually ask, "so what
do you do?" That may be harder than it sounds. Try to include
who you help and how you help them. I help small businesses with
marketing ideas and help them write their web sites, ads, and
press releases.

2. Often part of your one-sentence story will interest the
person you are speaking with. They'll latch on to one aspect and
want to know more. "You write press releases? How does that
work?"

3. Here comes the longer story. Give them the "one paragraph"
version of your story. "I spent 20 years working in radio and
TV, so I know just what media editors are looking for. You know,
reporters, talk show producers. We look at your business, figure
out what part of it would interest the media, then send that
story in a press release to media nationwide."

Practice the various versions of your story when you're riding in
the car. Memorize the important parts. People see you as expert,
in control, confident, and successful when you instantly explain
to them what you do.

books and creating affiliate programs?

http://myaffiliateprogram.com has a great, affordable affiliate
program system. I've used them for several years with good
results.

All you need to distribute an ebook is to put the ebook on your
web site server and provide a link on your site to download it.
Then promote your ebook. That's usually done with part of the
ebook converted to articles and sent around the Net to ezines,

Q: Kevin,

I've written press releases in the past and have sent them out
using snail mail using Gebbie's or Bacon's mailing lists. I've
had real good success. I'd like to start e-mailing a press
release to the media and/or using some distribution services.
However, I'm a little worried that many editors will just delete
the e-mail version of the press release.

I've come across many firms who will e-mail your press
releases to "x" many publications or include it as part of their
e-mail package to select journalists etc. But they charge
hundreds of dollars for distribution which seems a bit
overpriced. Have you had any experience with these types of
firms? Or should I watch my wallet so to speak. (chuckle) I've
had good success handling things on my own.

Also, I stumbled upon "mediamagnetpro" and got the demo. It
looks very promising. Just wondering if you have any experience
with it. I know Gebbie produces a CD with media contacts and of
course sells the names for importing into ones own software
program too.

Any insight would be appreciated.

When you get time, tell me a bit about your successes snail
mailing releases. As for emailing releases, it can work well.
True, a lot of media delete releases, but many also prefer
email releases because they're already inside the reporter's
computer (makes it easy to include the info in a story
or plunk the release on a page.)

Everybody has pretty much the same media addresses.
Any list you buy is largely going to be out of date (media folks
change jobs every 15 minutes.) Gebbie is the probably the
most affordable. There are only 5,000 so or general interest
media.

When outfits tell you they're sending to 11,000, they're talking
about ALSO sending your release to very specialized publications
like "The Water Quality Journal", etc.

Back when Media Magnet first came out we used it a few times.
Most of the addresses were out of date, but I understand they
keep them updated these days.

We have our own list we've developed over years of sending out
releases. The best deal is to have us write your release and
send it out via PR News Wire, the big daddy of release
distribution.

Use Email to Communicate With Customers

When I first started my little Internet business, I tried to
emphasize that email was my primary form of communication. It
was simply more cost-effective and time-efficient than the
telephone.

Sure, I still talked with some customers on the phone, especially
in the early days of the Internet when a lot of people needed
phone contact to feel comfortable. But the vast majority of
orders came in after writing back and forth with customers via
email.

A few years later, we hired more staff and added a toll free
number prominently featured on every page of DrNunley.com. Phone
calls naturally picked up, but email is STILL by far our number
one communication method. Why?

The telephone is spoken communication. Sometimes when we talk to
others, what we mean doesn't come through accurately. We tend to
talk in circles, going back over the important points again and
again. We also tend to miss things we meant to say, or get
flustered and say the wrong thing. You can't re-read a telephone
conversation to make sure you got it right.

However, when you write, our ideas must march logically along,
one after another. We can take the time to plan out what to say
and how to say it, and we're less likely to leave things out.
You can even go back and make changes before you send, and have a
permanent record of what was said.

These simple differences between talking and writing may be at
the root of why so many businesses find they make their real
sales from email, and not from the telephone.

Market to Your Customer's Senses

something we really like? We like the way it smells, the way it

As any psychologist will tell you, your senses are the best part
of being human. Senses make life worth living.

"Just listen to the power of those speakers!"

Q: Kevin,

Even though I have Internet sales, most of my business is through
mail order. I have a merchant account along with PayPal but many
of my customers pay by check. I normally hold checks pending
clearance of funds. This causes delay in shipment, especially
around the holidays. Is it common practice to hold checks? I

You might open with a 300 word sales letter that goes into
a bit of detail about all the major things you offer. The copy
could contain links to the pages that have those items or
services. This would help to organize all the many offers on your

I own a clothing boutique and have been here just a year.
Business is extremely slow. I'm in class full time and open only
on Saturdays. I take appts during the week after class if someone
needs to purchase anything. I will graduate in Aug. 200, but in

Let Old Customers Bring New Business

We all know it's not easy luring in new customers. So what can
we do? Simply get your existing customers to buy from you again.

So how do you keep old customers coming back? Try offering the
service or product they have bought before, but this time with an

Why Your Web Site isn't Selling

If you want your website is to be successful, you must first
learn the most common problems that can hold you back from a
high-selling site:

--Coding problems: your text is wrapping in odd ways, or your
graphics are stretched, distorted, or missing altogether.

--Copy problems: awkward or confusing sentences, boring or over-
technical copy, spelling and grammatical errors, poor
punctuation.

--Design problems: image overload (an annoyance to visitors,
often resulting in slow loading) blinking fonts, too much text
crammed onto one page, odd mix of background and font colors.

--Navigational problems: users can't figure out how to get to
the relevant information, or even worse, can't find the order
button.

Another quick tip: If yours is a business web site, design it
accordingly. Think about the kind of design that would be
appropriate for your audience and your product. After all, you
wouldn't print your resume on shocking pink paper using some
goofy font, and you wouldn't show up to a job interview in acid
green trousers and clown shoes.

on the size of the ad, but it's a very effective way to get local
