The economy has been tough all over lately. Consumers are
nervous about job layoffs and the direction things are going in.
Business customers are nervous because consumers are nervous.

to your in box. People love them. A good email course gives you
bite-sized, in-depth information and training on a topic you care
about. And email courses are almost always FREE.

On top of that, an email course doesn't require you to set aside
time to drive across town to a classroom. You can read the
course any time you want--at 4am when you can't sleep, during a
break at work, even print it off and read it on the train.

Make your email course cover a specific topic a LOT of your
customers care about. Think for a moment. What question do you
hear over and over again from customers.

How can I sell my used car in a down economy? How can I get an
extra job? How can I make sure my kids succeed in school?

These would all make excellent email courses. Introduce the
problem in the first lesson. Then use the next six lessons to
give solutions, ideas, and resources (people will give you credit
for knowing your stuff even when you send them to another
expert.)

In most cases authors will be happy to let you use their
material if you include their contact information.
Many magazines, newsletters, and newspapers offer reprint rights
at very low cost.

Your lessons can be delivered at a rate that fits your customers'

Get A List Of Club Members

Nothing gets sales like good targeted direct marketing.
Targeting is the key. If you send your sales letter or postcard
to only those people who are intensely interested in what you
sell, you will have more customers than you know what to do with.

Here is an easy way to get super-targeted names. Contact clubs
and associations who have members who would be very interested in
what you sell. Show the leader of the club why his members would
love to hear about your business. You can often get a list of
members and addresses for cheap or free.

Anika designs and sews costumes for dance students. She has an
attractive web site and can work with customers just about
anywhere.

Using a search engine, Anika finds several associations of dance
teachers and their students. Two are in her city, one covers her
state, and several more are national.

She first calls the presidents of the clubs in her city. She
explains over the phone how her service can benefit teachers,
students, and their parents. She schedules an appointment to
visit with the club leader, show samples of her work, and leaves
a brochure filled with enthusiastic comments from past customers.
She will also leave with the club's mailing list.

Many national groups sell their member list at low cost. One
business man I know does exceptionally well getting member lists
from the local chamber of commerce in cities he wants to target.

How To Call Radio Talk Shows

Just about every city has several radio talk shows. Many feature
programs covering all kinds of community and business issues.

Get on these shows from time to time and thousands of people will
know about you. You might even be able to slip in your business
name so the audience knows where to find you (but don't be
blatant about it.)

Write down the call-in numbers of several shows. Keep them next
to the phone so you can call in a flash when you hear an
opportunity.

Listen to the show to figure out what the main topic is. You
won't want get on the air with your comment about local business
if the host is talking about the Middle East.

Call at the beginning of the show. It is easier to get on the
air then. As the show goes on, more listeners will become
interested and the number of people calling will increase.

Get right to the point. Tell the producer what you want to say
on the air. When the host answers, tell her you enjoy the show
and make your point quickly. If the show has a guest, ask a
question after you make your brief comment.

Don't give up. You may not get on half the time, but persistence
will eventually make you a well-known caller.

Use Marketing Money Can't Buy

Wouldn't it be nice if you could afford network TV commercials,
full-page magazine ads, and an expensive ad agency to handle all
the details?

Having a huge advertising budget is nice, but it can create a lot
of problems. For example, I firmly believe a super-sized ad
budget may make your marketing boring and ineffective.

Here's why. Small businesses and startups who don't have much
money to spend must rely on good old fashioned creativity.
Since big media ads are out of the question, they look for cheap
or free ways to market. Those methods are often fresh,
innovative, and attention-getting.

Here are some terrific low-cost ways to market your business.
And boy do they get noticed:
* Take extra care in how you answer the phone. Be bright,
helpful, and eager to go the extra mile.

* Put a colorful flyer in with invoices and sales letters.
Highlight special deals only current and past customers can get.

* If your store or office is on a busy corner, stand outside for
a period each day and get to know those who pass by.

* Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.

* Spot radio stations setting up for a live remote. Arrange to
offer free prizes to their listeners (in turn they will mention
you, even interview you on the air.)

* Throw a monthly party at your store or office. Have cake,
balloons, even a magician. Invite customers, prospects, and
neighbors.

* Send a handwritten thank you note after every sale.

There are a lot of products or services that provide a good
value, but the ones that make us FEEL GOOD are the ones we'll buy
time and time again.

When you search for a new business opportunity or new product or
service to sell, consider how the product makes people feel.
Does it give them a energetic lift? Does it boost their spirits?
Do they feel good after using your product or service?

Answer "yes" to those things, and you're well on your way to
earning nice, consistent profits.

Also make sure your product or service is unique. Yes, there may
be other products in the same category, but make sure yours is
different from the others in important ways. It can me more
potent, more powerful, less expensive, more natural, or a host of
other positive factors.

Emotion is probably the most effective factor in marketing. Sell
a product or service that affects customers' health, mood, and
general well being and you'll have a winner.

Referral Businesses Make Earning Easy

These days, there are a plethora of opportunities to make money
from home. From direct-selling companies like Avon, to mail
order, to info products, there are dozens of different ways to go
about making some extra cash. Unfortunately, most of these
opportunities have one common problem: you have to sell.

Most of us HATE selling. We hate going door-to-door, bugging
friends and family, and making phone calls. Even if the selling
doesn't require face-to-face or telephone contact, we worry that
nobody will want what we sell, and our commissions will be zippo.

These worries are not unfounded. Most who have tried the selling
game have failed either sooner or later, and lost money,
credibility, or pride in the process. So what's a would-be
business owner to do? Quit selling and start referring.

Referral business offer the great commissions and potential
earnings of sales, without the embarrassment or risks. Many are
free to join, and pay members handsomely for sending people to
their website or getting them to sign up for something.

Now, not all referral programs are created equal. Like they say,
the best things in life are free. Well, this also applies to
referral businesses. If it's free, easy, and won't take oodles
of time to promote, you might have a winner.

Also look for referral programs that offer true benefits to those
who join. You should be able to use the products or services
involved, but so should a great majority of those you'll be
referring. For example, a program that refers people to apply
for credit cars would be universally applicable, especially
during the holiday shopping season.

Many referral businesses also compensate members for several
levels deep. This means that not only do you get paid for those

Traditionally, the December holiday season is the most important
part of the year for many businesses, especially those in retail.

1. Very few are going to blow off the holidays, even if funds are

some loved ones off their shopping list. When people don't have
a lot of disposable cash, they look for low prices. Suddenly
bargain hunting becomes the order of the day.

Expect masses of North Americans to flock to online retail sites
in ever greater numbers. The super-low overhead of online retail
allows sites to offer wide selection at the lowest prices on
Earth. After a decade of Internet shopping, millions of people
are now fully aware of this truth. Expect a very large
percentage of them to purchase some or all of their gifts online.

2. Gas is still high and may go even higher in the weeks ahead.
This means wading through clogged streets filled with holiday
shoppers is something most of our pocket books just don't want to
go through. High gas prices also mean paying for online

will be thinking "The 3 bucks for shipping is a lot less than the
$20 I'll spend driving all over town to the malls."

3. People are working harder than ever. The demands of one, two,

slow period at work. Yes, expect these folks to also do their
shopping online in unprecedented numbers.

The bottom line is clear: if you're a consumer, give yourself a

What's the difference between a potential customer window-
shopping in the mall and one who's browsing products on the web?
Actually, very little. They are, after all, the same people,

The Best Way to Save Money on Advertising - Target Locally

Over the years I have discovered exactly what derails an ad.
More often than not, when an ad fails to produce results, the
problem isn't with the ad. The problem is with WHO the ad
reaches.

Before you start blaming lack of response on your ad, stop a
moment to consider who it is TARGETED to.

Let's take a moment to look at Internet advertising. First off,
let me say I dearly love advertising on the Net. The advertising
rates for search engines and ezines are far, far lower than
advertising your business on traditional media like TV or
newspapers. For what one TV commercial would cost, I can
advertise a business extensively for weeks, even months.

But, as I'm sure you've realized by now, the Internet is no magic
advertising medium. Just as often as with anywhere else, your ad
can pull less than expected response. The problem is with lack
of targeting.

If most or all of your customers live in the geographical area of
your store, using a search engine to reach people all over the
world doesn't make much sense. You can consider your money
wasted when somebody who will NEVER walk into your store reads
your ad.

The solution is to advertise on sites or ezines that reach YOUR
customers at a very high rate. This could be a local site that
provides sports scores for dozens of local sports teams. Or a
site that lists a great many local building contractors. Very
specific information needed by people in YOUR area will draw just
the kind of local crowd you can capitalize on.

We're seeing a sudden rise of local pay-per-click search engines.
These use the same popular technology as Google and Overture, but
limit their reach to businesses in a particular city, state, or
region.

Often these local pay-per-click sites have very low rates, a
little as one cent per click. Many offer as many as 1,000 free
clicks to any business that signs up.

Be sure to check if the pay-per-click site has plenty of
businesses listed in their database. An empty site won't attract
many visitors and you may not reach enough audience to have any
effect on your sales. Also watch for a pay-per-click that is
promoting in your area. If they are visible to you, they are
probably getting the attention of lots of your customers.

How to Write Sizzling Sales Letters

We've all seen those "latest and greatest" online sales methods:
pop-ups, pop-unders, flashing banners, pay-per-clicks, etc.
These methods can be effective, but what about the fundamentals?
The truth is, the old, reliable sales strategies are often more
successful at pulling sales than the new techniques people come
up with.

Take the good old sales letter for example. It's probably the
oldest trick in the book, but it works. Used correctly, a sales
letter can be your key to making sale after sale, for years down
the road.

Most very effective sales letters will have a few things in
common. When writing your letter, here are the top things to
consider:

1. You need a great headline - The headline of a sales letter
tells you, in a nutshell, what the rest of the page is about.
People will decide from the headline whether they might be
interested in your product or not, so it should give your readers
a reason to keep reading. Choose your words wisely, and consider
your target audience. Ask yourself what would catch their
attention and make them want to know more.

2. DON'T save the best for last - It seems like our attention
spans are getting shorter all the time. If you take too long to
tout the benefits of what you're selling, you'll lose your
audience before you even make an impression. Give people your
most powerful selling points right up front, or your reader may
not make it past the first sentence or two.

3. Relate to your prospects - Talk to them about them! Consumers
won't care a whiff about your product unless they can easily tell
how it relates to them, what they'll get out of it, and how it
can make their lives easier or better. So point out the benefits,
how their lives will be different with your product, and make it
all about them...not you. Use a lot of "you" and "your" in your
sales letter, and speak to them in a way they can relate to.
Point out their everyday problem that your product will solve.
Let them know you understand, then offer your solution and call
them to action.

4. Back it up with facts - You can talk (or write) until you're
blue in the face, but if your statements aren't believable or
can't be backed up with some kind of proof, you won't get very
far. Try using endorsements, examples, and testimonials from
past customers. People love statistics, so try finding some that
relate directly to your offer.

5. Don't shout at your customers - Motivational copy is one
thing, but ridiculous hype is another. Don't throw out a bunch
of unbelievable promises, or use an exclamation point every other
sentence. You're trying to get your prospects excited, but if
you overdo it, you'll undermine your credibility.

6. Keep it simple - Not everyone is a literary genius. In fact,
most of your customers probably don't enjoy reading that much.
This is why your sales letter should be easy to read,
entertaining, informative, or otherwise engaging. Don't talk down
to your prospects, but use simple words and short sentences. If
your writing is too complicated, no one will want to read it.

7. Polish it up - Make sure your copy reads smoothly and is free
of grammatical and spelling errors. Above all, make sure there's
enough copy there to fully explain your product and how it can
help your audience. Copy that is full of errors or too sparse
will drive people away faster than just about anything else.

For regular mail, check your Yellow Pages for "direct mail."
That usually works best. However, direct email doesn't usually
work very well. You're probably better off with solo ads in

If the 1,600 hits are coming from ppc's, that might be the
problem. For some reason ppc's have very low conversion for most
sites. Pages that do well with ppc's often have very quick-read,

Watch Out! Copy Mistakes are Sinking Your Site

No matter how well you write, or even if you have a professional
writer create your web site copy, you're going to have errors.
Misspelled words, awkward sentences, phrases that don't make
sense, and words that are used incorrectly run rampant through
many sites. And it's no wonder. Writing well is hard work. Even
a good writer will be too close to the copy and won't see ALL their
mistakes, even when re-reading the copy carefully.

Mistakes in your copy can sink your web site. The online
audience who accounts for most of your customers are a rather
literate group of people. Studies show a large percentage have a
good knowledge of spelling and punctuation. If they find your
copy has several errors in it, prospects will figure you do
sloppy work.

The solution is simple. Get a proof reader to carefully check
your copy. You can enlist the help of a friend who has a sharp
eye for spelling and punctuation. Better yet, get a professional
proof reader to read your copy. Proof reading is almost always
affordable and the investment will pay off big time in avoided
embarrassment and missed sales.

Don't get too comfortable with spell checkers. Many have limited
numbers of words they recognize, and will skip past some
misspelled words. One of the most common problems is that a
spell checker can't help you if you use the WRONG word.

movie industries for many years. I can tell
you from personal experience that even Hollywood's writers
