Replace Your Business Card With a One Sheet

The problem with business cards is they generally don't give
enough information about your business. They only have
room for your most basic contact info and maybe a slogan
line about what you do.

A business card can't list your hottest services, your latest
products, your upcoming bargains, or your philosophy on
customer service.

These are often the factors that turn a meeting into a sale.
Instead of handing out cards (or in ADDITION to handing
out cards), pass out a one sheet. This is exactly what it
sounds like, a single sheet of 8x11 paper printed on one or
both sides listing all the benefits I mentioned above.

Start your one sheet off with a headline at the top touting
your most impressive and popular benefit. What is it you
provide that customers almost always go for? Next include
a sub heading that explains your business a little more.

Follow that with a graphic (your photo, a picture of your
building, etc.) and a pack of bulleted features/benefits. Also
include testimonials from satisfied customers or recognized
experts in your field.

Keyword In Your Title

Recently I spent a lot of time looking up competitors in
major search engines. By far the biggest factor in
determining who got listed in the top ten of every search
engine was this: put your main keyword--the one people
will use to search for you--as the FIRST word in your title.

If you haven't done a lot of web design, the title is that line
of text that appears in a little box at the top or bottom of
your browser. It goes in the HTML code near the top of
your page.

For example, if I were going to put up a page on writing
keywords and wanted it listed high on search engines, I
would write it:
keyword in your title gives you top search engine listings

Notice I don't capitalize the K in keyword. Search engines
will match the way you write the word to the way users
type the word when they're searching for you. keyword is
different from Keyword is different from KEYWORD.
Most people search using terms typed in all small letters.

There has been a real explosion of companies that provide
wholesale drop shipping. Many of these products are showing up
on eBay. Search Google for "drop ship products" and you'll
get a big list of firms advertising that service. Last year

Larger postcards tend to stand out more in the stack of mail.
Often, because they have their printing and graphics on the
outside where it can easily be seen, people pull the postcard out
of the stack of mail and read it first. I remember watching my
neighbor get his mail out of the mailbox at the street. Before
going back into the house, he stopped off at the garbage can and
one by one dropped "junk" letters, unopened, into the trash. A
larger postcard would have gotten his attention.

Focusing on the Target

One of the definitive rules of marketing is to focus on your
target market; get them in your sights and them BAM! You've got a
mighty fine sale to put food on the table.

But many businesses would rather blanket the population with mass
mailings, operating under the assumption that out of all the
recipients, some of them have got to be part of their targeted
prospects.

Don't assume anything! Increase your chances of reaching the
right customers by executing targeted mailings, not mass
smotherings.

One way to figure out who you should target and what your message
should be is to dig through your receipt files for names. Check
all kinds of documents, including purchase orders and invoices.

With these documents you can determine who is likely to buy from
you, where you are making the most money, and what product lines
or types of business can be put on the back burner, or eliminated
altogether.

After classifying which customers are and are not buying from
you, tailor letters to fit each group of targeted prospects.

You will find that you can execute targeted mailings as often as
mass mailings, and your response rate will almost definitely go
up.

Getting Good Low-Cost Help

Undergraduates are willing to do anything to get some experience
and a reference to include on their resume. They know how close
they are to being jettisoned out into the real world, where the
battle of the entry level position begins.

Don't miss out on these students' ready and willing to learn
attitude. Oh, and their willingness to work for a modest wage,
sometimes even for free.

For instance, you could round up some marketing students to
design a questionnaire and poll customers. They get to say they
were involved in marketing research, and you get to find out what
your customers think and want. Everybody wins.

Or, you could hire a graphic design student to build your
website. It's best to harness their skill on the way up, while
their rates are still affordable.

And, of course, college students are usually willing to work for
less if you offer a flexible schedule. Classes are sometimes
offered during inconvenient times of the day, making it difficult
for college students to find jobs that will work with their
schedules. Give them some leeway on scheduling, and they'll give
you some flexibility on wages.

most powerful marketing strategies around, and your business
could probably produce the best before and after shots ever.
Include those on your site, in your print advertising, and direct
mail pieces. Also use your testimonials heavily. Nothing works
better than a real customer talking about how awful the damage
was, but how you came in, set their worries at ease, and did a
great restoration.

Q: Kevin,

I'm starting my first direct mail campaign. I have inkjet
mailers which I hope will return to me full. I'm sending them
out to lists of environmental agency donors and home business
opportunity buyers. I also want to send some out to new small
businesses and Christian schools because it can be a fundraiser.

I don't know if my envelope on the outside is going to say "free
inkjet mailer inside" or if it's going to say "new fundraiser
idea" inside. I may also customize the envelope but I don't know
if I wan to say more than that. There will be an insert on the
inside that will explain details.

Do you have articles on your web site describing what's good for
these sorts of programs? I'm concerned about how much or how
little to put on the outside of the envelope and about getting
too detailed with my insert.

Your plan is very good. Get the Chamber list first and test out
your sales letter and envelope. "Free inkjet mailer inside"
would be a great teaser for the envelope. Make your letter quick
to read and don't leave too much mystery about what you're
offering. Once you try all that, you may want to purchase
mailing lists (or rent them). Look for "direct mail" in your
Yellow Pages to find local mailing list brokers.

Getting a Sign For Your Store

Signage, as it is called in retail, can be quite expensive.
Those big, colorful, creative signs that adorn the outside of big
stores often cost thousands.

Yet few things are more important in marketing. Great signage can
make or break a business that depends on local traffic.

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. The businesses that need a great sign are ones that depend on
impulse visitors for lots of sales. If you are one of the only
businesses of your type providing a specialized product or
service to a very interested group of prospects, you probably
don't need much of a sign. Your customers will find you.

2. Think hard about signage while you're choosing your store or
office location. Zoning and landlord rules often tell you
exactly what kind of sign you'll be allowed to have.

3. Prices of signs vary widely. When I looked around my local
area, one supplier estimated my sign would cost $600. I was able

4. A basic rule of sign designers is the fancier your sign
looks, the harder it is to read. If you want people to be able to

Starting a Biz When You Don't Know Anything

get advice and information elsewhere. Those people are quite

Star In Your Own TV Commercials

Some of the most effective TV ads feature a business owner as
spokesperson. Sometimes the owner is serious. Others project a
silly or goofy image. Still others go for a down home feel that
makes customers comfortable.

Realize from the start that shooting a TV commercial takes lots
of time and effort. Dave Thomas, who has appeared in Wendy's
commercials for years, says it takes all day to shoot including
dozens of takes. "You have to be in the mood of the spot," Dave
says. "It takes a lot of work and I rarely feel like I get the
scene right."

Don't worry if you don't consider yourself model beautiful. With
all the perfect faces on TV these days, customers often respond
to someone who looks and sounds like a regular person.

If you aren't very good at acting, don't try to do a dramatic
scene. Unless you're going for cheesy, bring in professional
actors to do the dramatic lines. You can appear in the
spokesperson role.

crew or ad agency talk you into something you don't do well.

Getting Your Press Release to Media

I was reminded again this week just how cheap and effective a
press release can be to get your business in front of a LOT of
people.

Stephanie McHue, owner of The Running Woman Errand Service, said

businesses in your area. This week I've seen my local paper do
big stories on a muffler shop with an employee competing for the
"fastest pipe bender" championship. The strapping young guy
bending an exhaust pipe made for a great photo. The paper also
covered a local barber who has been running his own one-man store
for 40 years...and a bakery that sells to police officers, school
teachers, and kids from their back door during the early hours of
morning.

Look for the things that make you, your employees, or your
business interesting to the media. Newspapers like a good story,
TV wants something that makes a good photo, and radio loves
anything that is funny, entertaining, or even sad.

Media organizations have gone wild filtering their email. I
suggest you email your press release, then regular mail it to the
media outlet, then call to point out you sent it (I'll get a howl
from editors for telling you to call, but it's the plain truth
the more noise you make, the more likely some of those editors
will notice you).

Mostly an ezine is a great way to stay in touch with
people who have visited your site or contacted you for
more information. Often people will be on your ezine
list for weeks, months, even years before they buy something.
