Promote To Local Media

Media are constantly looking for new stories and
information that will interest their audiences.

Chances are, your town has at least one major newspaper,
several smaller papers, a few TV stations, a bunch of radio
stations, and at least one cable company.

Local media like to cover local stories. You have a much
better chance of getting free publicity from a reporter in
your area than from national media.

Send media a press release when you have something new
to announce: a new product, service, public service
program, or alliance with another business.

Small businesses often make good feature stories. Work
up a sheet of helpful tips related to your business. Make
sure they are things the media audience will be interested
in.

Local talk radio stations and programs are constantly in
need of interesting guests. Watch for times when your area
of expertise fits with a breaking story, holiday, or issue the
media is covering.

Turn Failure Into Success

One of the reasons why huge fortunes have been made in
California's Silicon Valley is failure is no big deal.

Take a long look at your marketing. Does the average
customer understand it? Is there a way to refocus it for a
stronger appeal?

Whether your biz is online or off, making customers
comfortable with buying from you is key to sales.

We can take a tip from the Mail Order industry. Mail Order

Make `Em Email You

I started my business out on the Internet with the emphasis
on email communication with customers and prospects.

Sure, I talked with a lot of customers on the phone,
especially in the early days of the Internet when a lot of
people didn't feel comfortable buying until they made phone
contact. But the vast majority of orders came after writing
back and forth with customers via email.

Recently we hired more staff and added a toll free number
prominently featured on every page of DrNunley.com.
Phone calls picked up, but email STILL far outstrips the
phone as the best way to get sales.

Here's why. The telephone is spoken communication.
When we talk our meaning doesn't go in a straight line. We
tend to talk in circles, going back over the important points
again and again (don't feel like I'm picking on you, the
entire world does this when they talk).

Writing is linear in its logic (as scientists say). When you
write, your ideas must march along one after another
without doubling back. This may not be the most
comfortable way to communicate, but writing makes people
organize their ideas and get to the point.

This very simple difference between talking and writing may
be at the root of why so many businesses find they make
their real sales from email and not from the telephone.

Calling to offer special discounts or new products can be
effective, but you really have to do your homework. You need to
make sure you're not violating the new "do not call" list (which
most of us are on), and you need to target the people you're
calling to avoid wasting your (and their) time. Generally, I
believe you're allowed to call people you've done business with
in the last year, so you may want to go through your past
customer list for names. Repeat customers can really keep your
business in the black--just make sure they're the ones you're
calling.

Business Cards At The Cash Register

There is a company in my town that places a small display of
business-card-sized ads in restaurants. The cards go next to the
cash register and advertise everything from sporting goods stores
to accountants, to general contracting. In most every case,
those advertising are small or home-based businesses.

This cheap and simple method works. Smart Card Displays has
been successfully providing this advertising service in the Salt
Lake City area for 10 years. Small businesses love it.

The cards are always printed simply on colored card stock. Most
include a simple graphic to get attention and help quickly
communicate the ad's message.

You might consider starting an advertising service like this in
your own community. Many restaurants, stores, and high-traffic
offices welcome the cards.

Also think about letting customers put their cards in a card
holder next to your checkout area. This provides a fine service
to customers while giving people something to look at while you
process their order.

Marketing Your Reputation

When we talk about marketing and advertising we usually
discuss ezines, TV ads, newspapers, search engines and the
like. But none of these are nearly as important or powerful
a marketing tool as your reputation.

If you run a great business or do fine work and everyone
knows and appreciates it, you're on the right track. On the
other hand, you don't have to settle with just any old
reputation you end up with. Smart businesses set out to
purposely build a specific planned-in-advance reputation.

Decide what rep you want people to know you buy. Are
you a top expert with ready answers, honest in an industry
that is often less than honest, speedy among competitors
that aren't?

Pick a reputation that makes a difference to customers. If
everyone has low prices, stress your high quality. If all your
competitors are bad at answering email, make quick
response your known reputation.

Advertise your reputation in all your marketing. Make it a
headline on your web site. Put your reputation statement on
your business card. Then follow through to back up your
reputation and prove you deserve it.

Advertising Ideas

The most difficult part of advertising is often just coming up
with the idea. Even the most successful writers can get stuck
at times. Here are some ways to produce advertising ideas that
SELL!

First of all, it is important to get the facts. You need to know
specific facts about the product as well as facts about the
audience you want to target. Get all of the information you can!
Read magazines, flyers, newsletters, and even junk mail. Also,
talk with people. Go to classes and seminars or attend meetings.
You never know when the information you learn will be useful.

Try using a checklist. When you're stuck for an idea, a
checklist can help you come up with different possibilities or
strategies. You could make a checklist for headlines, or a
checklist for why people buy products. This will help you get
headed in the right direction.

Get feedback. The way you see your ideas may be completely
different than the way others see them. Show your rough ideas to
others. Or, have someone look at your finished copy and give you
their opinion on how it might be improved.

Try teaming up. If you are a copywriter, you could team up with
an art director. Or if you are an entrepreneur you might team up
with a corporate manager. A partner can expand upon your ideas
and could make them even better.

Sleep on it! Sometimes you need to just put the problem aside.
You're probably thinking about it way too much. You might be
surprised when the perfect idea comes to you "out of the blue."

Making Classified Ads Work

Are you having trouble coming up with that perfect classified ad?
Here are some tips that will help you write a classified ad that
sells.

You definitely want your ad to stand out from all of the others.
But it's important not to leave out the information that really
sells. Make sure you're thorough. Readers want to know all
of the important facts about your product or service. If you
don't include that information, they might pass right by your ad.

Don't use abbreviations unless it's necessary. An abbreviation
you use might be perfectly clear to you, but someone else might
have no idea what it means. How can they decide if they want to
order your product or service if they don't know what it is
you're selling?

Be honest in your ad. Some people exaggerate in their classified
ads because they feel they get more of a response. But, what
happens when a buyer finds out that they have been mislead? They
definitely won't appreciate it and will take their business
elsewhere. They will probably tell others about the horrible
experience they had with you, and that will not be good for your
business. Honesty really is the best policy.

Clearly state your price. The price of an item is probably one
of the most important factors to classified ad readers. Ads
that show the price are the ones that get results! Also, giving a
price helps you to attract customers who are in your price range.

Remember to include your contact information. Be as accessible as
possible. Include a telephone number, email, fax, and the hours
you can be reached so customers can get in touch with you. Often
a customer who can't get through to you the first time won't call
again.

We distribute releases through PR Newswire. They can focus on all
the media in the Los Angeles area, then additionally send to
about 3,000 major media nationwide (including all the big ones:
from NBC to Yahoo, etc). They don't give me a complete list, but
it's about as comprehensive as anyone needs. They also send to a
shorter list of appropriate industry publications they choose.
Again, I don't get to see this list, but these guys are the best
in the business for 50 years and know what they're doing.

Make a Promise, Grab a Sale

Cross my heart and hope to die; swear on my mother's grave; the
truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you
God. These are all promises. Whether these statements are used to
make a false promise or not, they all do one thing; they make the
promisee feel secure.

One of the quickest ways to get a potential customer's attention
is to make a promise. In marketing, that promise should be the
first thing they see, so it should be embedded in the headline.

A headline should appeal to an immediate need. Regardless of who
your target audience is, all people have the need to feel secure;
to know that an advertised product or service can fulfill the
advertised claim. That is where the promise comes in.

Now, this doesn't mean that you should say the words "I promise,"
only that they should be implied. Offer a benefit and phrase it
in a way that says, "We are completely confident in what we
claim."

But beware the false promise. Though plenty of advertisers make
them, a false promise will only sell a product or service once.
If you want to create long-term customers, make a promise that
your product or service can fulfill. Once they see you are as
good as your word, they will feel utterly secure. And security is
what really sells a product.

Refine Your Marketing Budget for Tough Times

After a few years, most businesses establish a set formula for
determining their marketing budget, usually a fixed percentage of
revenue. But when economic times get tough, it's time to make a
few alterations.

The mistake businesses make is to simply cut the marketing budget
when they experience a downturn in revenue. Big no, no. In an
effort to protect their bottom line, they are more likely to
bottom out.

Instead of cutting your marketing budget, try making a few
refinements:

1. Concentrate on past and current customers. They are more
likely to purchase from you, even during difficult economic
times. Mail to them more often, call them more often and let them
know about special promotions more often.

2. Instead of cutting your marketing budget, refine your
marketing message. Customers will be thinking of how they can get
more for less, so focus on the value rather than the low price.
Keep your prices the same and use special promotions
intermittently.

3. Take a closer look at who your real prospects are. Instead of
mass mailing, focus on a more targeted audience. Profile your
prospects and find those who have similarities to your past
customers. This technique will save you money and elicit a higher
response rate.
