Write Classified Ads That Sell

I'm a big fan of classified ads. They are the most affordable
kind of advertising and, if used properly, can pull in lots of
leads.

Make sure you have a headline. Keep it short. Write it in
ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. I try to make the headline
speak directly to the reader with a twist that is just a tad
provocative.

ARE YOU SURE you're working the best system?
DON'T GIVE UP trying to save costs. We can help.

These headlines jump out at people when they're scanning
down a list of ads.

Be careful when you use abbreviations. Not everyone will
understand what they mean. I'm embarrassed to say it took
me a long time to figure out SASE means "self-addressed
stamped envelope."

Make your ad sound conversational rather than like a want
ad. You will get better response.

Promote With Coupons

There are many businesses where it is hard to make a sale
without a coupon. A pizza shop owner told me almost all
her customers come in with coupon in hand. Half of all
breakfast cereal sales involve a coupon.

Think of ways you can offer a coupon to your customers.
Offer a discount, a free item with purchase, a
complimentary service, or the chance to buy a product in
very limited supply.

Coupons can be printed in newspapers, distributed from
your counter, printed on the back of your business card, or
included at the bottom of email messages.

Many savvy Internet businesses include a discount offer in
their confirmation email sent after a sale. The offer steps
the buyer up to additional related products and services.
Businesses figure someone who just bought is by far the
most likely type of person to buy again.

I recently used a software firm's attractive confirmation
offer to return and purchase $100 more worth of product.

The point is to get people to save your thing of value
(coupon), remember you, and ultimately be motivated to
choose you over a competitor.

Q: Kevin,

Just a question about articles. If you send out an
article to a distribution service, are you supposed to
put the number of words at the top? Do I put a live
link in my resource box that goes back to my site? The
link should be an email link - is that right?

I've found putting the number of words at the top
of the article isn't necessary. Editors tend to look
at the article and know if it will meet their needs.

We also include a live link to your site and your
email address so editors and others can let
you know they're using your article.

Making Customers Happy Can Increase Sales

Happy customers can lighten your work load by cutting down on the
number of fires you put out each day. They can also make you
rich!

It's up to 20 times easier to get a sale from a satisfied
customer as it is to sell to new prospects. It pays to do what
you can to keep customers happy.

1. Make customers feel like there is a free flow of
communication between them and you. As soon as we get an order,
I write back to let the customer know the order has been
received, when they can expect delivery, and how to contact us
for up-to-the-minute information at any time.

2. Respond quickly. If the customer has something good to say,
email or call back with your appreciation. If the customer has a
complaint, get back with them even faster.

3. Explain your product or service. Many customers aren't at
all sure how it works or how you make it. I step each customer
through the process before we start work. "We get your
information, we write your copy, then we send it to you for your
approval." There is a reason why Subway sandwich shops let you
watch them make your sandwich. People love to see the process.

Be Narrow-Minded When You Advertise

It used to be that when you asked a business who they wanted to
sell to--they said "everyone!" More businesses are starting to
understand going for everyone won't work.

Unless you are Coca Cola or General Motors, marketing to everyone
is simply too expensive. But there is another reason why narrow-
minded advertising is a good idea. It is much more effective.

Years ago I developed a series of recorded comedy routines.
Since almost everyone likes to laugh, I could have marketed them
to people all over the world. Instead, we did a very small
postcard mailing just to DJs who produce funny radio programs.
Response was over 30 percent (average response for direct mail
like this is usually 1 percent or less.)

I've since learned that high response rate wasn't all that rare
for narrow-minded marketing. Limiting your ads to just those
people are most likely to be interested and buy can shoot
response through the roof.

How do you create your narrow-minded ad blitz? If you get a
batch of software at an especially low price, send an email to
only those folks on your list who are very likely to need that
kind of software. Write your message so it speaks directly to
their--and only their--most pressing concerns. The more narrow-
minded your ad is and the more narrow your target audience,
the higher your response will be.

Q: Kevin,

I plan to start a professional carpet cleaning business in mid-
spring. I need as much exposure and as much inexpensive
advertising as possible. I will be locating in the Baton Rouge
Louisiana market area and I plan to target the upper end
users/clients as I plan to provide superior service. There are
other competitors; about 3 major franchise operators and about
30 other small family owned part-time and full-time operators in
a populated area of about 450,000. I have a business plan and a
budget for marketing and advertising, but other than the initial
startup funds of about $700.00 for advertising, I only have
$200.00 weekly for some form of advertisement. The metro
newspaper charges about $475.00 daily for a 2.5 x 5 inch ad and
$525.00 on Sundays. I need quick response so that I can operate
in the black after about 3 months. Any suggestion

Sounds like you've done your homework on marketing. That's great!
I lived in Baton Rouge years ago -- finest food in America and
not many people know that. Your best bet would be to get in one
of the advertiser mailouts that include coupons. Check around
the area to see what company is doing that. It's not super
cheap, but it's probably your best bet for targeted prospects.

Tips for Telephone Calls

The phone can be one of your most powerful selling tools.
Successful sales people know that it is not what you say, but HOW
you say it that is important. Here are a few tips to make your
phone calls more effective.

Get to the point fast. Figure out your objectives before you
call and present them in a way that will keep your prospect's
attention. Avoid sounding rehearsed, however. A natural
sounding voice conveys to the prospect that you care about them
in particular.

Remember to use your company's name often. Familiarize your
prospect with your service or product and gain their confidence.
Use testimonials to support your claims. This gives valid
support to what you're saying and helps get rid of a customer's
doubts.

Make sure that you smile. Why should you smile while on the
telephone? A smile adds a pleasant tone to your voice that
customer's can actually hear and feel. It gives you a sense of
warmth and genuineness.

The person on the other end of the line wants to succeed just
like you do. If your product or service will aid them in that
success, then you are doing them a favor. If you can convince
your prospect of this, then you have a guaranteed sale!

search engines. Make sure menopause is the first word
in your home page title. And provide information people will
