Should Your Sales Letter Be Long or Short?

It's always a controversy. Some people like short sales letters
for email and web sites, while others like to go long.

Usually you can figure out what is best for you by doing a little
testing. Some people do fine with short copy while others only
make sales if their page is 900 words or more. If one thing
works for you, keep doing it and don't let anybody tell you
otherwise.

I have found short copy works very well for prospects who are in
a big hurry. If you have a lot of prospects who make up their
minds fast, then buy quickly on an impulse, use short copy.
Drawing your sales pitch out paragraph after paragraph will only
frustrate them and lose the sale.

For people in a hurry, get right to point. Tell them what you are
selling, how much you want for it, what the product or service
can do to improve their situation, and finally, how they can buy
it.

On the other hand, most people--something like 70%--won't buy
unless they have lots and lots of details at their fingertips.
These are the folks who buy best when they have a nice long sales
letter in front of them.

If your prospects will sit still to read three, six, even twelve
pages worth of copy, by all means give it to them. Anyone who
reads that many pages will want to order, even if it is to ensure
they didn't waste their time reading.

Work Hard and Long to Get Rich Quick

People often ask me, "Hey, does ANYONE make money from those get
rich quick programs?" Now keep in mind they're lumping
everything from illegal pyramid schemes to reputable network
marketing and affiliate programs all into one confused pot.

My experience is that programs you can work on your own are just
like any other business. You have to work hard and be prepared
to fail a few times before you succeed.

The majority of people who try these programs don't do much after
they sign up. They get the thrill of seeing their free web site,
reading through the initial sales pitch, maybe even getting on a
call with a mentor--then they put the whole thing on a back
burner and drop out a few months later.

Others make a serious effort. Those who are organized and
determined often earn a respectable part-time income after the
first year.

A few, usually those who have worked similar programs for several
years and show some real talent at it, make the big bucks.

The bottom line is: Work long and hard to get rich quick. If you
go in knowing that's the way it's going to be, you'll stand a
much better chance of reaching your goal.

Worldmerge is a great program for this. You can compile your
addresses in a text file, then direct the software to the file
and it will read the addresses and send automacially. You can

You can do something similar by doing a MailMerge with MS Word.
Search Google for MailMerge and you'll see lots of easy tutorials
for how to do this.

I'm in the process of researching the best outlets for on-line
and print media press releases for my company. I came across your
services and advice via a google search and appreciate what I
real.

In your opinion, where would be the best (and cheapest, if
possible) on-line source for submitting the press-releases?

In addition, I found a website (also via a google search) that
lists almost every single Newspaper in the United States with a
link to their website on which one can find the contact
information. My question is: what is the best format to send
these press releases? Are e-mails acceptable? are they less
credible if in e-mail format?

Is it better to call? If so, where could I attain the phone
numbers?

Going to media sites, getting their submission addresses, and
emailing your press release is an excellent method. This works
particularly well for reaching your local and regional media.
Email is the preferred method to receive a release because it's
already in the reporter's computer and it's easy to forward to
the correct person.

Market With Your Own Email Discussion

As time goes on, people are spending less time surfing the
World Wide Web and more time reading email. A significant number
of people--more than 20 percent--use email exclusively. With
email appliances and cell phones getting into the act, this trend
is bound to continue.

Give your business a big jump on the trend by starting your
own email discussion group. It's quite possible that your
industry doesn't have one.

You can get excellent free service from lists.Topica.com or
groups.yahoo.com.

The first challenge you will have is getting the word out
about your list. Get lists of possibly interested parties
through a trade association.

Search through Topica, groups.google.com, and Yahoo for groups
similar to yours. You can sign up with them, post for a while,
become known, and gradually get people to participate in your
list.

Encourage people who join your list to forward their favorite
posts to a friend (I repeat--FRIEND--and not to anyone they don't
know).

Even though I have Internet sales, most of my business is through
mail order. I have a merchant account along with PayPal but many
of my customers pay by check. I normally hold checks pending
clearance of funds. This causes delay in shipment, especially
around the holidays. Is it common practice to hold checks? I

The Advantage of Being Second

Remember how important it was to be a first mover on the
Internet? First movers were those companies that were the
first to stake out a market, then grow to dominate it.

Amazon.com was the first big online bookstore and grabbed
much of the book market. eBay was first to do an auction
and immediately drew millions of users.

In spite of these successes, the vast majority of first movers
were unable to get large groups of customers excited. They
burned up billions ,then went belly-up. WebVan, who built a
huge system to deliver groceries to your door, had to throw
in the towel.

Don't worry about ordering groceries online. The idea didn't
go down with the dealth of WebVan. There are other
companies that came along after WebVan who are making
profits at the same buisness

This illustrates a principle smart business people have known
for years. It's better to be the second business to try
something, not the first.

With any new idea comes risk. The first person to try

easier to imitate what they did right and follow in their
footsteps.

The 80-20 Rule of Customer Buying

There is an old rule in business that predicts 80 percent of
your sales will come from just 20 percent of your
customers. This is largely true.

Typically you get the lion's share of your sales from people
who just happen to have a deep interest in what you sell,
live near your location, or have some emotional bond with
you or your business. That could be 20 percent of your
customers or 2 percent. Whatever the case, they account
for a lot of your big orders and frequent orders.

I've notice this rule doesn't quite apply to the Internet.
Maybe it is because it is so easy to compare prices, so easy
to jump from one site to the next (you don't have to drive
there in your car), and there are so many sites to choose
from.

The majority of my site sales come from a constantly
shifting group of new faces. To be sure, core customers
who return time and again are greatly appreciated, but they
don't account for the majority of revenue.

I got a little worried about this last year when a business
analyst said this was due to the newness of the
Internet. "Eventually the Net will run out of people who
want to jump on and give it a try," he warned. Sales will
settle down, much like the way they do at a bricks and
mortar store a month after the grand opening.

But that hasn't happened. When it comes to the 80-20
model, the exact opposite may be true for Internet business.

can tell you which editor or reporter to talk to.

Q: Kevin,

I have an e-newsletter where I give tips on running an Internet
business. My question is, each issue I try to give new programs
that are good and report programs that are scams. Should I just
rotate opportunities each issue or only include a few each time?
I generally introdcue 5 or 6 opportunites each issue which is
every other or third day. Is that to many opportunities?

I don't get many takers, but I have only had a newletter for 2
1/2 months now and already 1005 people have opted in to read it.

I must be doing somthing good to keep them as subscribers--but
they won't sign up for the business opportunites.

Any idea how to resolve it so I get more sign-ups?

A: Barbara,

I agree you're doing something right. 1005 subscribers in less
than 3 months is very good. You might do better to include
around 3 opportunities in each issue. It may take more time for
people to start to completely trust your information and sign up
for the opportunities. Keep the good information coming and it
will happen.

Q: Kevin,

I'm starting my first direct mail campaign. I have inkjet
mailers which I hope will return to me full. I'm sending them
out to lists of environmental agency donors and home business
opportunity buyers. I also want to send some out to new small
businesses and Christian schools because it can be a fundraiser.

I don't know if my envelope on the outside is going to say "free
inkjet mailer inside" or if it's going to say "new fundraiser
idea" inside. I may also customize the envelope but I don't know
if I wan to say more than that. There will be an insert on the
inside that will explain details.

Do you have articles on your web site describing what's good for
these sorts of programs? I'm concerned about how much or how
little to put on the outside of the envelope and about getting
too detailed with my insert.

Your plan is very good. Get the Chamber list first and test out
your sales letter and envelope. "Free inkjet mailer inside"
would be a great teaser for the envelope. Make your letter quick
to read and don't leave too much mystery about what you're
offering. Once you try all that, you may want to purchase
mailing lists (or rent them). Look for "direct mail" in your
Yellow Pages to find local mailing list brokers.
