Why Media Are Going For Younger Audiences

Noticed recently how your favorite "mature" newscaster has been
replaced by a much younger face? Or how TV commercials and
series are featuring younger characters and more youth-oriented
story lines?

For decades media has followed baby boomers. In the 50s and 60s,
boomers created huge audiences of kids that media went after
feverishly, with Top 40 radio and lots of kids' shows on TV. By
the 1970s the cry among media programmers was "appeal to 18 to 34
year-olds." In the 80s, going after 35 to 49 year-olds was all
the rage.

Today, many in the massive baby boom audience have raised their
kids, bought about as much stuff as they can cram into their
home, and have plenty of money saved and invested. Wouldn't this
be the best time ever to advertise to boomers?

No. Advertisers want customers who are at times in their lives
when they are having to spend every last dime the moment they get
it. The young couple with several small children who constantly
need food, clothing, education, insurance, and medical care are
the ones advertisers want. These are the same folks who buy lots
of cars, purchase and furnish new houses, and may be starting new
businesses.

Keep these things in mind when placing advertising. Boomers are
cheaper than ever to advertise to, but younger audiences may be
pricier to reach.

The Difference Between a Sales Letter and an Ad

People often get the terms ad and sales letter confused. It's
understandable. Both are designed to get new leads or sell a
product, service, or idea. But there are important differences
in how they work.

A sales letter is a more personal form of advertising than an ad.
An ad in a magazine or newspaper will be seen by thousands or
perhaps millions of readers. A sales letter is for the reader's
eyes only. Even though a sales letter is often mass-produced,
the reader still views mail as more personal than an ad in a
newspaper or magazine.

Unlike an ad, a sales letter can use the first person. This
conveys a more informal, natural tone. This way the reader gains
a better sense of the writer's personality, enthusiasm, and
sincerity.

Too many sales letters sound like advertising. The words should
flow in your own voice, as though you were writing to a friend.
The reader should feel like they know you though reading your
sales letter.

Send your article to as many places as you can. There's always a
little confusion over that. Magazines want you to submit your
article to one magazine at a time. But web sites and ezines
rarely care if your article appears elsewhere. Typically, the
articles we write and distribute end up on hundreds of sites.

Calling to offer past customers special deals or new services can
work very well, but you have to be careful. You need to make
sure you're not violating the "do not call" list (which
most of us are on), and you need to carefully target the people
you're calling to avoid wasting everyone's time. Generally, I
believe you're allowed to call people you've done business with
in the last year, so keeping a database is a good idea. Repeat
customers can make up a big percentage of your sales--just make
sure they're the ones you're calling.

How to Design a Print Ad

Got a display ad comming up in the local paper?
Distributing flyers on cars in your area? Are you including a
sales one sheet in this month's invoices to customers?

Here is a simple and effective way to lay out a print ad.
Start with a headline in large bold letters. You can phrase it
like a question to pull people into the rest of your copy.

WANT TO LOWER YOUR PHONE BILL?

Follow that with a sentence in large, bold letters that
explains your offer.

"Make calls to anywhere in North America at any time of
the week 24 hours a day for just 5 cents a minute."

Below that insert a photo, illustration, or graphic to add life
to your ad. Then list your main features paired with the
benefits they provide. Write them in bulleted form for quick
and easy reading.

Finally, tell people how they can buy. Give them several
ways to contact you. Include your phone, email, web site,
and physical location.

11,000 Media Contacts

These days media organizations are having to do more with
fewer people and smaller budgets. This means your local
TV, radio, or newspaper outlet may be paying a lot more
attention to press releases which give them a free source of
ideas and story leads.

There has never been a better time to write your press
release and send it out to media. How many media are
there? It depends what you're trying to do with your press
release.

There are several PR companies online these days offering
to send your release to 11,000 or more contacts. Most of
these lists are packed with very specialized pubications (like
the Drinking Water Journal) and ezines who have no
interest in your release.

I've found there are about 5,000 media outlets at any given
time that are interested in receiving press releases on a wide
range of topics. These are TV, daily and weekly
newspapers, a few news services, and a small handful of
general interest magazines. The vast majority of contacts
on any list are radio stations whose numbers account for
more than half of media in North America.

Also look for lists of media who specialize in covering your
industry. If you sell computer books, you might look for a
computer industry list and an education list. These more
specialized lists range from 6 contacts to almost 200
depending on the subject area. I've found http://automatedpr.com
to be a great source of these tightly targeted lists.

Beyond that, you don't need to worry about targeting. All
major media outlets have a person who goes through
releases and targets them to the editor or reporter who
covers your topic.

One of the most effective ways to get lots of
visitors to your web site is to offer a free
service. This doesn't have to be anything

The one thing the Web does better than anything
else is dispense good, customized information.
You can jump online, skim through a search engine,

Make a list of the most common problems your
customers and prospects have. Can you solve one
of their problems with a simple service that

Several Reasons Why Advertising Sometimes Fails

In a perfect world, ads would always pull in more leads than you
could handle, sell out the warehouse, and flood your bank account
with cash.

But here in the real world it's a mixed bag. Once in a while you
will get an ad that pulls like crazy. More often your ad will do
ok, then quite well with some tweaking and persistence. But
sometimes your ad will just sit there, getting no attention and
making no sales.

Here's why ads sometimes fizzle.

1. The ad sounds too much like all the other ads around it. The
benefit it touts in the headline is almost the same benefit the
other ads are shouting. You see this in lots of business
opportunity ads when every headline promises fast wealth.

2. The ad is too vague. The copy sounds good, but people can't
easily figure out what you are selling or what it costs. Too
much sizzle and not enough steak can backfire.

3. The ad tries to do all the selling. A classified ad or Google
ad can't do much more than get people to your web page or call
you on the phone. Use the ad to get attention and build
interest, then let your sales page or telephone pitch do the
selling.

4. The ad appeared for a blip, then was gone. People rarely buy
the first time they see an ad. It takes a time or two before
they may even notice it. Then prospects have to see the ad again
before their interest builds.

Admit It! You're Good

One of the biggest reason's people and companies
don't market to the best of their ability is they
can't admit they are good.

You are a foremost expert on a topic ALL your
customers crave information on I tell my friend
John. Aw, naw, he says. No matter how hard he
tries, John can't seem to promote his best
strength in his marketing.

John, like a lot of us, feels bragging about what
he does well is a bit unseemly. Deep down he
hopes that if he does his work well, word will get
around on its own. To some extent that is true.
But if John really wants to build his brand and
company name, he will have to promote his greatest

strengths by writing down the tasks, jobs, or
ideas you have accomplished. Think about what
strengths led you to be able to accomplish these

Get Results With Your Banner Ad

Banners are the Internet's standard ads. We see
so many of them on the site's we visit that we
often don't even notice them.

Many banners get very poor response. Out of 200
people who see a banner, only one will click on
it. By doing a few things to improve your
banners, you can get 2 or 3 clicks per 100
visitors. That can increase your sales two or
three-fold overnight.

Don't try to cram too much copy into banners.
Make graphics do the talking. People should be
able to get your message largely from the
graphics. Make your copy and graphic work
together to tell the story.

For example, a picture of a hand grabbing a
thousand dollar bill is accompanied by copy that
reads "Make the REAL Money...JobBank.com"

You can use animation to get attention. The hand
could slide across the banner toward the $1000.
The copy could appear on a second frame.

You can keep the loading time of your banner down
by using 16-color cartoon-type graphics.

In New York City, any kind of advertising is going to be
very expensive. Put a sign on the side of your vehicle
that says CARPET CLEANING -- your lowest price --
and your phone number. Also offer a referral fee to
any customer that sends you a new customer. It could
be $20...and you wouldn't have to pay it until the
new customer has paid you.

with the Patent and Trademark office at http://www.uspto.gov/
They have a handy search feature that lets you see if
anyone else has already trademarked your name. You can
trademark words or trademark how those words look in print
(for example, the look of your logo).
