4 Tips to Improve Your Conversion Rates

There's a lot more to converting visitors to customers than
simply getting them to your site. That is only the first step.
Once you start getting visitors to your site, the next leg of the
journey begins.

*First of all, you have to create an instant attraction with an
esthetically pleasing site. People are naturally attracted to
things that are pleasing to the eye: shiny stones, attractive
people, fine clothing, etc. We've been taught that, if something
looks good, it is good. So don't scrimp on the site design. If
you don't have the design skills to create an attractive site,
there are plenty of web designers out there who can create an
attractive site for a reasonable price.

*Don't be a number hog. You could get millions of people coming
to your site, and still not convert one of them into to a customer,
because you aren't necessarily drawing the right people. The
wrong visitors waste time and bandwidth and slow you down from
serving the right people.

Find a package that can be installed in your site to track your
traffic. What you want to get out of your stat package, aside
from conversion rate and total traffic, is to get a better
picture of who you are attracting to your website. You may find
that the people you are attracting are never going to buy
anything; in which case, you need to change your search engine
key words or marketing.

*Don't make your visitors work hard to buy from you. What if you
walked into a store and found something you wanted to buy, but
then you had to navigate your way through a maze to find the
checkout counter? You would probably quit halfway though, which
is what your visitors will do if you don't make your navigation
and point of entry clear and simple.

Over and over again, I've seen very successful sales people
sell simply by talking with customers. They just start
talking (or emailing), get a conversation going, then --

Size Matters...For Ads

Sure, we would all like to run full page ads every time we place
an ad in a publication.

However, if you have to go with something smaller, make it work
to its maximum potential.

Most full sized newspapers are twenty-two inches high. If you run
an ad that is twelve inches high, or higher, then you can be sure
your ad will be above the fold.

The size of your ad will always matter. The bigger the ad, the
better to be seen with, my dear.

However, unique borders, graphics and eye-catching design can
serve to grab a reader's attention.

Whether big or small, just make sure that something about the ad
entices readers to look closer.

the rich don't work for money; they have other people work for
their money.

This is invaluable wisdom for anyone who owns or operates a
business.

Too many people are under the impression that, once you own your
own business, your life will be smooth sailing.

However, owning your own business often means adding to your
responsibilities. Sure, you have the choice of whether or not to
do more work, but when more money is at stake, most people choose
to take on more work than they can handle.

But it doesn't have to be that way!

Do as Kiosaki says and have others work for your money.

This doesn't have to mean employing a full time staff.

Solicit as much work as you can and outsource to independent
vendors or freelancers who will do the actual work. Then you can

Use An Established Name

Sixty-five percent of new businesses cease to exist three
years after they start. I'm convinced a large part of those
folks simply get tired of the business and move on to
something else.

Often they leave behind very well-established business and
product names. Rather than letting these names fade away,
you can get permission to continue them. They come with
built-in customer trust and recognition.

While big corporations sell their names for millions, most
small businesses have little or no opportunity to profit from
names they are retiring. Most entrepreneurs will be
delighted if you offer them a small fee along with a
percentage of future sales. Some will even give you the
name free simply to see their old idea continue on.

Keep a list of really good names, businesses, and ideas that
seem particularly effective in your line of work. Check back
with these businesses each year. Your odds of catching one
at just the right moment are quite high.

When you see a business on its way out, consider how you
could profit from taking over their name, product, or

How to Use Your Competition's Kryptonite Against Them

Everyone and everything has a weakness, even Superman. Of course,
Superman isn't totally unstoppable if you know his one weakness-
kryptonite. With kryptonite, even the smallest child could beat
him.

If even Superman has his Achilles heel, then so does your
competition. The trick, just as with the man in blue, is to find
out what it is and then use it to your best advantage. In fact,
you can use your competition's weakness as your own USP (unique
selling proposition).

But how do you find out their weakness? Some businesses guard
their weaknesses well, but others unknowingly wear them on their
sleeve.

Here are a few ways you can spot your competition's weakness:

1. Pretend you are their customer. Before you visit their site or
store, think of what you want, something that they should
provide, but which they might not have thought of. Then when you
pretend patronize their business, you can look at it from the
perspective of a real customer. Does your competition offer the
brands you want? Do they have an easy to navigate site? Do they
make extravagant promises you suspect they're incapable of
keeping?

2. Make a list of your competition's pros and cons. Many
businesses don't just have one or two weaknesses, but a whole
slew of them. But to understand and use those weaknesses, you
have to keep in mind their strengths, as well, because some of
their strengths will cancel out their weaknesses.

3. Learn from your competition's past customers. Do you know
people who patronize your competition? Ask them about their
experience when you see them. Don't let on that you're looking
for cracks in the armor. Just casually inquire as to whether they
had an entirely positive experience with the competition. If one
customer had negative comments, chances are others will too.

An ezine is an email newsletter (originally it was short for
electronic magazine...but that name didn't stick).

Mostly an ezine is a great way to stay in touch with
people who have visited your site or contacted you for
more information. Often people will be on your ezine
list for weeks, months, even years before they buy something.
An ezine can bring you sales week after week for as long
as you publish it.

I'm starting my first direct mail campaign. I have inkjet
mailers which I hope will return to me full. I'm sending them
out to lists of environmental agency donors and home business
opportunity buyers. I also want to send some out to new small
businesses and Christian schools because it can be a fundraiser.

I don't know if my envelope on the outside is going to say "free
inkjet mailer inside" or if it's going to say "new fundraiser
idea" inside. I may also customize the envelope but I don't know
if I wan to say more than that. There will be an insert on the
inside that will explain details.

Do you have articles on your web site describing what's good for
these sorts of programs? I'm concerned about how much or how
little to put on the outside of the envelope and about getting
too detailed with my insert.

Your plan is very good. Get the Chamber list first and test out
your sales letter and envelope. "Free inkjet mailer inside"
would be a great teaser for the envelope. Make your letter quick
to read and don't leave too much mystery about what you're
offering. Once you try all that, you may want to purchase
mailing lists (or rent them). Look for "direct mail" in your
Yellow Pages to find local mailing list brokers.

Using a Publicist

If you have a major advertising campaign underway, you should
also have a big publicity program going as well. Your ads not
only get the attention of potential customers, they also attract
the attention of editors, producers, and writers in the media.
Your chances of getting free media publicity during a major ad
campaign are quite good.

Don't leave it to chance. Take a two-tiered approach. Send out
well-written press releases to all the media in your town,
region, or even nationwide. You never know who will pick up a
story. Sending your material to everyone (especially cheap with
email) is a very good idea.

Then go one step further. Get a publicist to work with you.
Publicists take a much more concentrated, hands-on approach to
getting you covered by media. They often call TV producers and
pitch your story, or write pieces about you and query them to
specific magazines or newspapers.

Look in your local Yellow Pages to find qualified publicists.
Many work with firms specializing in public relations and are
members of the PRSA (Public Relations Society of America). Many
advertising agencies do publicity as well. Some agencies
specialize in getting media coverage for specific industries.

Publicists aren't cheap. Good ones start at $2,000 per month.
But that's money you need to spend if you're also investing in a
big ad drive.

There are many times when you simply can't provide the

Maria Marsala recommends networking to find other
businesses who can provide additional products and services
to your customers. She calls it the "buddy system."

"What services don't you do that your clientele may enjoy?
Can you find a business in your area that offers that service?
Can you buddy with this business?"

Q: Kevin,

Recently I read an article that talked about a unique way to
get low-cost or possibly free advertising on a cable station.
I don't recall the source, but the gist of it is that there is
a policy or regulation for a certain type of advertising that
the station director won't offer up front, but when he or she is
pressed by someone who knows about the existence of this policy
or regulation the director will have to admit its existence and
thus will have to offer it as an advertising alternative as well.

Do you know of any special kind of advertising rate or policy
that must be offered by cable TV stations?

Good to hear from you. The article might have been referring
to public access on cable TV. Some cities have it written into
their contract with the cable firm that the cable station must
offer a channel that lets people from the community produce their
own shows (Wayne's World was based on this). Some also have a
public service announcement channel.

I sometimes see articles on how to get free ads on radio. I spent
21 years in radio and never saw anybody give away free ads. I
don't think anybody in TV gives away free ads either. So public
access is probably your best bet.
