How to Develop and Test Your Marketing Plan

Developing a solid marketing plan goes hand-in-hand with testing;
you can't do one without the other. If you don't test your plan,
you won't know for sure whether it works.

You don't have to be a multimillion-dollar corporation with a
team of marketing experts to test your marketing plan. All you
have to do is come up with a system for finding out what you want
to know.

Break your testing schedule down into weekly intervals focused on
determining one or two things. Remember, your goal is not only to
find out what works, but what doesn't work.

Say during four weeks of testing, you send out a mailing each
week to 1000 different people. On each separate mailing, you have
a different price for the advertised product or service. The
response to these mailings should tell you which price is most
acceptable for your product / service.

The response rate should also tell you which type of customer is
buying what you offer and why. By the end of the four week
testing period, you will have determined your pricing and target
audience.

Once you know whom to target, you should test how to get the best
response rate from these potential customers. Initiate a second
testing period in which you send out a different mailing each
week with fixed pricing, but varied messages. Contact the same
recipients with different messages over a period of months after
the second test period has ended. You should never stop refining
your marketing plan.

The point of developing a marketing plan is to have a set system
that works. Without proper testing, you will never know what
strategies are effective, so before you settle into a plan, put
it to the test.

phones have done, it has been to force everything in business

Your site is well done, but it does take some time to load, even
on my broadband connection. Perhaps it is a little too bogged
down with graphics. The pictures of your product are great, but
you might do well to simplify your design a bit so it's not so
dependent on the graphics. Also, make sure the parts of your
copy that should stand out are made into headlines, so people can
skim the copy quickly and get a good idea of the benefits of your
product without spending a lot of time reading.

How to Handle Rejection

Part of selling anything is handling rejection. It's always
great when a prospect says "I'm so glad to see you. This is just what
I need!" But the law of averages says most of the people you
come in contact with won't be that enthusiastic.

There are so many ads and people trying to get us to spend
money that most of us put on a stern face any time a sales
person approaches. This doesn't mean we dislike the sales
person, just that we're getting psyched up to hold our ground.

Of course, a good sales person realizes this and works to set our
reservations at ease, helping us to relax and understand how the
sales person may be able to solve our problems.

Keep this in mind when you are selling something. It doesn't
matter if you are selling cars, telling a neighbor about your MLM
opportunity, or using email to sell yourself to a prospective
employer.

Rejection is part of the game. Realize people aren't rejecting
you personally, but the situation. In most cases they simply
aren't ready to buy at this time. No doesn't usually mean no,
but not right right now. A week, month, or year from the now the
prospect who rejected your sales pitch may come looking for
you wanting to buy.

How Copyright Works

I get a lot of questions from people who want to know how
they can protect their article, poem, photos, or web site
content. I'm not a lawyer, but in general, here is how
copyright law protects you.

While it is a good idea to put your name and "copyright
2006" next to your work, it is not mandatory. Your
creations are automatically protected under copyright law
the moment you make them.

The problem comes when you want to challenge someone
who steals your work. You need ways to show the date
you created the work which should be before the other
person created it.

Web pages with a date stamp on them can work well to
prove your work came first. Nothing like looking your
work up on a search engine and finding the date fixed by an
independent authority for all to see.

The official site of the US Copyright Office is:
http://www.copyright.gov/ Everything you need to
know about copyright is discussed there.

You can stick your work in an envelope and mail it to the
Copyright Office along with $30 to get an official copyright
registration. It is hard for anyone to claim they own
your work once you've done this.

testimonials all over your website. Few think of doing the
same thing to their bricks and mortar location.

One very successful firm covered an entire wall of their
reception area with letters from happy customers. While a
customer waits to meet with a sales person, she can peruse

her concerns and challenges.

If your company would never consider such a brash move,
carry customer testimonials in a nice leather notebook. Call
it your Customer Hall of Fame and never fail to show it off
to prospects and customers.

Q: Kevin,

I've had an article and an ad written by you, with lots of
success I might add :-) But I think I need your advice.
My main objective over the last five years has been to offer
personalized cartoons. My main page has been number 1 and 2 in
all the major search engines for related keywords.

I put up Google Adsense on a lot of my pages this year. Since
I've discovered Adsense, I had the idea of creating more sections
to my site that were more diverse so as to reach more of an
audience. I think my main page has gotten away from the mark but
I m afraid to change too much. I don't want to drop in rank or to
lose any potential clickers to other categories of my site. But
I've been getting less and less orders lately (not sure if it's
because of the summer - it varies from year to year)

Market With Your Own List of Great Web Sites

The Internet has a wealth of great information. It's all there
free for the taking IF you've got enough time to search for it.
With the average work week reaching toward 60 hours, very few of
us have the luxury of spending the day picking through search
engines and web rings. We appreciate it greatly when others do
the work for us and tell us which good sites to see.

If you have found web sites that are useful to people in your
business--share them. Make a list of your favorite sites along
with a short explanation of what each offers and why it is
special. Put your contact and ad info at the bottom of the list.
Lists of hand-picked web sites are one of the most valuable gifts
you can give a client, prospect, or customer. They make great
marketing.

2. Spend a few sentences showing the reader how bad their
problem is. Show them how the problem will get worse.

3. Show the prospect how your product or service will solve that
problem. List your main features and tell how each feature
translates into a benefit.

4. Wrap up your sales copy with a vision of your prospect's life
after they've benefited from your product or service. Show how
they are happier, richer, more relaxed, or sexier.

5. Be sure to tell prospects how to contact you and how and

I can usually have a press release ready for you and sent to
media within a couple of days. Radio and TV usually use material
right away. Newspapers can take a couple of weeks, but they'll
use the material whenever it is needed according to the date of
your event. Magazines are usually written 2 months ahead of
time. Major online media sites often have your info up within an
hour after distribution.

I could write just the release and you could send it to your
local media. That is often the best, least expensive route to
promote an event.
