that you can use autoresponders for repetitive exposure. Most
prospects need to be exposed to an offer between 3 and 7 times

However, knowing what to say in an autoresponder and how to say
it are two different things. First you must know the three things
that make up the backbone of an effective autoresponder:

Okay, that's the easy part. Now you have to know how to use
autoresponders to their greatest potential. Thanks to the
examples of Internet gurus, we have plenty to work with. Here are
a few of the most successful applications of autoresponders:

1. The multi-part sales letter - Break up a long sales letter
into a series of weekly messages and you have an instant
autoresponder series. You can also send a sequence of letters,
each promoting a different benefit of your product or service.

2. The Training or Coaching Course - Valuable information is a
commodity to your prospects, so offer it to them in the guise of

These days a great many people search the Internet before
they look in the Yellow Pages. Put up a simple web page for
your bakery. Make the title something like "Your town Bakery
specializing in donuts, bread." You get the idea. Then register
the page with Google.com. People will find your site and check
for your location, hours of service, items sold, and specials.

Here in New Hampshire I used to own a small coffeehouse that mostly
existed to give local musicians a place to play. The web site was
dirt simple, but it worked incredibly well to let all interested
parties know what we were doing. I didn't even had to install a
telephone.

us there has been a big change in the way people browse

Convert Business Language into People Language

Jargon tends to creep into our language no matter what
business we're in. When I meet with teachers at my kid's
parent conference, they use a lot of terms and codes I don't
understand.

We tend to do the same thing in business. A letter or email
to a customer can use business-speak phrases like "in our
considered opinion" and "enclosed please find." Simplify
these into everyday language: "we think" and "here is."

Often we use jargon and complex phrases in an effort to
seem smart, serious, professional, or give our ideas more
weight. While that may be a smart thing to do when
communicating with other workers in your field, customers
react best to straight, plain talk.

After you write something, try to speak the same ideas. If
you are saying something you wouldn't say in normal
spoken conversation, change it to sound more natural.

This ability to put even complex ideas into everyday
language is the hallmark of many successful politicians.
They know their careers depend on helping voters connect
with their ideas.

The prospect doesn't have to type anything to send the
message. "Send Me Info" automatically shows up as the
subject in their email message.

Marketing a Small Town Business

A lot of people who read these articles live in small towns.
Smaller communities are great places to live, but they often
offer fewer opportunities to earn an income. People in rural
communities have long known their best chance to succeed
can be in owning and operating their own business.

How do you market a small town business (or a
neighborhood business in a city--which works much the
same way)?

Start with the oldest and most effective form of marketing
known. Talk to people. Smile, look them in the eye, and
tell them about your business and how what you sell can
help them. You don't have to do a hard sell, but give people
you know or meet the lowdown on what you've been up to.
In small towns, that kind of local, personal information is as
important as the morning headlines.

Talk to the editor of the nearest newspaper about doing a
feature story on you and your business. Make a point of
noting the interesting or helpful information you can provide
for the article.

Why Web Sites Don't Sell

Recently I sat down with Stefene Russell, our in-house web
site expert, to learn the most common problems that trip up
web sites. Here's what is holding back many of the sites she
sees:

--Coding problems: your text is wrapping this way and that,
or your images are stretched or distorted,

--Copy problems: awkward, confusing sentences; spelling,
grammar or punctuation errors.

--Design problems: too many images, blinking fonts, too
much text crammed on one page.

--Organizational problems: users can't figure out how to get
to the relevant information, or even worse, can't even figure
out what the topic of the page is supposed to be.

Stefene says another quick litmus test is to remember who
your audience is. "If this is a business web site, then treat it
that way. You wouldn't print your resume on shocking pink
paper using some goofy font, and you wouldn't show up to
a job interview in acid green trousers and clown shoes."

Good to hear from you. You first need some fine autoresponder
letters to put in your autoresponder. Then you need a way to
drive people to your autoresponder. The best way by far is to
send out articles to sites and ezines. Your articles should be
educational and, at the end, send people to your autoresponder to
get more information. Your autoresponoder messages can be a cross
between lessons and sales letters.

This is a classic method that works for just about any kind of

Q: Kevin,

I plan to start a professional carpet cleaning business in mid-
spring. I need as much exposure and as much inexpensive
advertising as possible. I will be locating in the Baton Rouge
Louisiana market area and I plan to target the upper end
users/clients as I plan to provide superior service. There are
other competitors; about 3 major franchise operators and about
30 other small family owned part-time and full-time operators in
a populated area of about 450,000. I have a business plan and a
budget for marketing and advertising, but other than the initial
startup funds of about $700.00 for advertising, I only have
$200.00 weekly for some form of advertisement. The metro
newspaper charges about $475.00 daily for a 2.5 x 5 inch ad and
$525.00 on Sundays. I need quick response so that I can operate
in the black after about 3 months. Any suggestion

Sounds like you've done your homework on marketing. That's great!
I lived in Baton Rouge years ago -- finest food in America and
not many people know that. Your best bet would be to get in one
of the advertiser mailouts that include coupons. Check around
the area to see what company is doing that. It's not super
cheap, but it's probably your best bet for targeted prospects.
