How Business Buyers Are Different From Consumers

Most of the advertising and marketing we see is directed
toward consumers. Yet, much of the money spent around
the world is for products and services purchased by
businesses. For a very long time, business-to-business
transactions made up the lion's share of Internet purchases.

Consumers don't necessarily NEED your product or
service. If money is tight or the customer isn't convinced
they need it, the consumer can just as easily wait until next
month or next year to make the purchase.

Businesses often NEED what you are selling right now.
Their immediate profits may depend on having it.

Businesses buyers are more knowledgeable. You will often
be selling to a manager or specialist who knows your
industry inside and out.

Consumers are in a hurry and aren't always interested in
reading long marketing copy. Business buyers generally
appreciate all the information you can give them. Long
copy is no problem.

What to Put in Your Autoresponders

Free autoresponders are everywhere. And we've all heard
about how they are a powerful tool for giving you follow-up
selling with no effort. After all, most customers won't buy
the first time. They only buy when you remind them to buy.

Try writing an information "article" to put in your
autoresponder. I put article in quotations because it doesn't
have to be anything like a regular article. One man does
well with a series of top 10 lists. Top ten ways to get on
search engines; top ten ways to get visitors to your order
form. It could just as easily be Top Ten Ways to Improve
The Look of Your Yard.

They key is to zero in on a specific, precise audience of
people who are deeply interested in a particular issue.

Your autoresponder article can simply offer news about a
new project or service. Explain why you developed it, how
it works, quote folks who are using it, what benefit it brings,
and how the autoresponder reader can get a special deal.

Courses are also good. People love to get a seven lesson
course on a popular topic. It can be delivered to them each
day, or every other day, or even once a week. This can
keep you on their mind for days, weeks, even months--until
the sale comes in.

Setting Up The First Sales Meeting

Some things, especially expensive products and services, are
best sold in person. Lots of business people close sales on
90 percent of these person-to-person meetings.

Once you find a prospect who is interested, try to find out if
they can be a serious customer. Many people are too
difficult to work with, don't have the money to afford your
product or service, or have a problem you aren't equipped
to handle.

Quickly discover if the prospect falls into one of these
categories, then politely end the conversation before
scheduling a meeting.

Rather than a "sales meeting," call your first eye-to-eye an
analysis, consultation, needs assessment, briefing, or
diagnosis.

Position your first meeting as an opportunity for the
prospect to get valuable information that will immediately
help to improve their situation.

Don't be afraid to charge for the first meeting. Fifteen years
ago most prospects expected the first meeting to be free,
but more than half now expect to pay for the help they get.

Make Yourself Famous on Discussion Groups

Nothing gets sales like being an expert. When people know
you can help their situation with experience and knowledge,
they don't mind paying for whatever you suggest.

One of the Net's best tools to turn yourself into a
recognized expert in your field are discussion groups.
These can be UseNet newsgroups (go to Google and click
"groups" to find them) or they can be
discussion groups on web sites. There are also email
discussion groups, sometimes called listservs or
majordomos.

Pick no more than two or three groups to participate in.
Join, then hide and watch for a while. Get to know what
kinds of topics are discussed and who the main characters
are. Many groups have at least one "troll under the bridge"
who seems to thrive on running down anyone who takes a
different view point.

When someone asks a question, be the one to give them a
good, solid answer. Make it a goal to answer a question
once or twice each week. Keep your answer strictly
non-commercial but DO include your commercial signature
file at the end sending people to your site and email.

Several top successful business folks have told me their only
method of advertising was participation in discussion
groups. It generated many a customers over a period of
months.

Use Email to Communicate With Customers

When I first started my little Internet business, I tried to
emphasize that email was my primary form of communication. It
was simply more cost-effective and time-efficient than the
telephone.

Sure, I still talked with some customers on the phone, especially
in the early days of the Internet when a lot of people needed
phone contact to feel comfortable. But the vast majority of
orders came in after writing back and forth with customers via
email.

A few years later, we hired more staff and added a toll free
number prominently featured on every page of DrNunley.com. Phone
calls naturally picked up, but email is STILL by far our number
one communication method. Why?

The telephone is spoken communication. Sometimes when we talk to
others, what we mean doesn't come through accurately. We tend to
talk in circles, going back over the important points again and
again. We also tend to miss things we meant to say, or get
flustered and say the wrong thing. You can't re-read a telephone
conversation to make sure you got it right.

However, when you write, our ideas must march logically along,
one after another. We can take the time to plan out what to say
and how to say it, and we're less likely to leave things out.
You can even go back and make changes before you send, and have a
permanent record of what was said.

These simple differences between talking and writing may be at
the root of why so many businesses find they make their real
sales from email, and not from the telephone.

How to Handle Rejection

Part of selling anything is handling rejection. It's always
great when a prospect says "I'm so glad to see you. This is just
what I need!" But the law of averages says most of the people
you come in contact with won't be that enthusiastic.

There are so many ads and people trying to get us to spend
money that most of us put on a stern face any time a sales
person approaches. This doesn't mean we dislike the sales
person, just that we're getting psyched up to hold our ground.

Of course, a good sales person realizes this and works to set
our reservations at ease, helping us to relax and understand how
the sales person may be able to solve our problems.

Keep this in mind when you are selling something. It doesn't
matter if you are selling cars, telling a neighbor about your
MLM opportunity, or using email to sell yourself to a prospective
employer.

Rejection is part of the game. Realize people aren't rejecting
you personally, but the situation. In most cases they simply
aren't ready to buy at this time. No doesn't usually mean no,
but "not right now." A week, month, or year from the now the
prospect who rejected your sales pitch may come looking for
you wanting to buy.

No doubt you have heard of viral marketing. Just like a common
cold, it involves having people pass an idea or product from one
person to the next.

Unlike a cold, a marketing virus is a wonderful thing to catch!

These biz-tips are a simple kind of viral marketing. I write
them for this newsletter , but they almost
always get picked up by other editors who send them to their
readers who send them to their list. You may be reading this tip
years after I wrote it. Amazing, isn't it?

I write the article once, then enjoy the benefits as one person
passes it to another. It's not unusual for one million people a
week to see these articles.

Look for ways you can give your product, service, or idea a
marketing virus.

* Give people a free service they can use. Your web address and
phone number are included in every product they send to others.
Free email accounts (like yahoo) and online greeting cards
are great examples.

* Start a joke that pertains to the news or common experiences in
life. If it's in an email, it can include your name. Jokes get
passed around at an unbelievable rate. Some humor experts
believe there may be as few as 7 people who come up with most of
the jokes we hear. They start them on their viral tour,
eventually reaching millions.

* Create a series of books, pamphlets, or TV commercials. A
series makes people want to tell others so they can get in on the
progression.

* Perhaps the most effective method of viral marketing is
simply being kind and helping people. Help folks for free
when you can and give paying customers more than they asked
for. You may be surprised at how fast customers tell their
friends...and in these days of email, that can be a LOT of
people.

Networking With Business Cards

Last year I opened a new music venue here in New England. It's a
small place where local bands can play and fans of all ages can
get in for cheap.

Right away people were coming in telling us what a "cool" idea
the venue is. I found myself passing out business cards right
and left. Some customers wanted to remember our web site
address. Others were musicians wanting our phone number for
later reference.

In the process of taking to people and handing out cards I met
several folks who could be of help to us. One, a designer with
terrific ideas for our decor, wrote her name, number, and slogan
on the back of one of my cards and handed it back to me.

Have a wad of cards handy when you find yourself in a group.
Don't try to sell, just pass out your card with an invitation to
call or email.

Collect other people's cards, organize them, then call a week
later to pick up the conversation again and...this time..do some
selling.

If you're a bit on the shy side, like I am, hold a drink. A soda
or bottle of water is fine. It can make talking to people
easier. In restaurants, clubs, and many meetings, holding a
drink is perfectly acceptable and often puts the other person at
ease as well.

I'm in the process of researching the best outlets for on-line
and print media press releases for my company. I came across your
services and advice via a google search and appreciate what I
real.

In your opinion, where would be the best (and cheapest, if
possible) on-line source for submitting the press-releases?

In addition, I found a website (also via a google search) that
lists almost every single Newspaper in the United States with a
link to their website on which one can find the contact
information. My question is: what is the best format to send
these press releases? Are e-mails acceptable? are they less
credible if in e-mail format?

Is it better to call? If so, where could I attain the phone
numbers?

Going to media sites, getting their submission addresses, and
emailing your press release is an excellent method. This works
particularly well for reaching your local and regional media.
Email is the preferred method to receive a release because it's
already in the reporter's computer and it's easy to forward to
the correct person.
