What Makes Your Business DIFFERENT?

Not getting any response from your advertising? Not making any
sales on your web site? The problem could be your business is
looking too much like all the others.

The key is to insist your ads STRESS what makes your business
DIFFERENT from the others.

I'm not saying your business IS like all the others. In fact, you
can probably think of several strong reasons right now that make
your business different AND better than others in your industry.

BUT, your ads and web site may not be stressing those
differences. Let me give you an example of how good web sites
are getting messed over by the wrong approach.

This week I spent some time looking at hundreds of business
opportunities online to see how they are being marketed. Almost
ALL tout their ability to make you a LOT of money. You can earn
without doing any work, any sales, and use amazing automation to
accomplish it all.

Sounds good, right? Until you realize there are literally
HUNDREDS of opportunities being advertised with exactly the same
benefits. So many choices mean prospects lump everybody in the
same pile, probably saying "they all look the same so I don't
believe any of them."

Look for ways your business is different from others in your
field. Maybe you talk with every customer on the phone, or
provide 30 day free follow-up, or accept returns with no
questions asked, or offer free advice, or customize your product
or service for each customer.

What makes my business different? I'm one of the few writers left
who writes every customer's copy fresh from scratch. There is NO
possibility that you'll get a sales letter from a template or an
article that looks like somebody else's. And everything is
written especially for your situation.

Until a customer brought it to my attention, I didn't realize
that was what made me different. In the future, I'll promote
that in ads.

Sell Something Other Advertisers Can Use

Ever notice that some businesses get amazing response from their
advertising, while others get very little -- even though they're
advertising in the same places.

Research shows that for many of the big online advertising
venues, you largely get other advertisers reading each other's
ads. That's true for most other advertising outlets, including
newspapers.

While that phenomenon upsets a lot of business people, YOU can
take smart advantage of the situation. Instead of advertising
your usual product, service, or opportunity, promote something
all the other advertisers need.

One of the first small businesses to make a huge splash on eBay
was the woman who dropped all her garage sale items to sell
bubble wrap. She correctly guessed that all the other sellers on
eBay needed discount bubble wrap to ship their products. She was
right. Within a few months her home-based business had expanded
to a warehouse with a dozen employees.

A recent check of the online advertising phenomenon TrafficSwarm
showed 87% of the thousands of ads are promoting MLM-like
opportunities. Instead of advertising your opportunity, you can
offer to train others to succeed, no matter what their business
is. I'm currently on TrafficSwarm offering to re-write people's
ads (boy, do some of them need it!)

Are you writing articles and submitting them to ezines? Try
offering something ezine editors can use to make their jobs
easier. You'll be surprised by response.

Two Top Reasons Marketing Fails

Ads sometimes don't work. There are a lot of reasons why
this happens, but more often than not, we can point to two
downfalls that seem to hurt marketing.

Problem one is your ad isn't clear to the people it is talking
to. Most of us have words and phrases we use in our
industry that make little sense to our customers. Strive to
put your ideas in plain everyday language. If you have an
industry buzz word, translate it into words everyone uses.

Just as often, the one important benefit that will make
people buy gets lost somewhere in the copy. Often when I
get a long email message from someone, they'll have the
important part in the next to last paragraph. Someone in a
hurry wouldn't find it.

Problem two is marketing frequently isn't pointed at the
right people. One guy who wanted to recruit members for
his MLM opportunity advertised in the daily newspaper.
Lots of people read the paper, but very few were interested
in network marketing. He would do far better to put his ad
in a networking publication or ezine that specializes in his
target audience.

How to Get Testimonials

Nothing sells products and services like good comments
from past customers. Prospects believe the word of a
customer long before they'll buy into even the best written
ad or most lavish TV commercial.

But how do you get good testimonials, especially if your
business is new?

1. Nobody says YOU can't provide the testimonial. If you
have personally used the product you are selling and truly
believe it's the best thing since sliced bread--put that in a
testimonial. Put your own words in quotations.

2. Get someone who is a recognized name in your field to
say something good about what you sell. Let them mention
their own interest in the testimonial. This is why blurbs on
book covers go, "Best book I've ever read," Joe Blow,
author of How to Get Rich. Joe lends his good opinion as a
way to get a mention for HIS book.

3. Put up a comments form on your web site. Clearly
mention that some comments may be selected for display on
your site or in your promotional literature. Some people
will say good things (which I sure they mean sincerely) just
to get their name in print.

4. Always include the person's first and last name along
with the city they live in or the business they work for.
Otherwise, people will think you made up the testimonial.

Promote Your USP

Your USP is your Unique Selling Position. It's the one
thing you have that your competitors don't. When you
promote your USP you get more customers.

Your USP could be a product or service that people want
but the others don't sell. It could be something a bit more
intangible like friendly service.

One search engine promotion firm I worked with NEVER
answered email. Another always replies within hours.
There is never any question which will get my business.

Put your Unique Selling Position on our business card, in
your newspaper ads, and front and center on your web site.

If everybody in your business keeps their prices a big secret,
publish yours right out in the open where anyone can
examine them (you might be surprised how many of us
won't buy if we aren't given the price without having to
ask).

Keep Old Customers Coming Back

It is always going to be faster, easier, and cheaper to get
your existing customers to buy than to lure in new
customers.

Give your customers a new reason to buy again. Offer the
service or product they have bought before, but this time
with an added incentive. You not only design the web site,
but also promote it for the first month.

Big discount stores like Kmart and Walmart have
discovered the truth in this system. You'll notice they go
wide but not very deep. Instead of selling six different
styles of can openers, they sell just one or two types of 60
different kitchen utensils.

Use this same principle to maintain your business' niche
focus while bringing existing customers more and more
related products.

addition .

The Press Release LETTER

A while back I was on the radio DJ discussion group when
one guy suggested people send a letter rather than a press
release.

This makes a lot of sense as I used to use this method with
great success. Here's how it works:

Rather than sending a press release, media editors find it
refreshing when you simply send a letter that gives them an
idea for an article, program, or report.

Have your letter introduce yourself and tell why you are
qualified to provide the information. Then get directly to
the juicy part. Tell the editor the information that will
REALLY interest their readers.

Editors jump for story ideas that relate to things in the news
or help readers with a common problem.

Follow that with some interesting or helpful details the
editor can use to fill the article out. Finally, provide your
contact information so the editor can reach you for answers
to her questions.

Marketing With Small Signs

Small signs are a terrifically powerful to promote your small
business at almost no cost.

Start your sign with a headline that can easily be read from a
distance of 20 feet. Keep the copy short and simple.

Tailor your message to the neighborhood your sign is in.
One woman is doing very well putting her signs about
earning extra income part-time in neighborhoods of young
families and minimum wage workers.

Another is doing well with a sign advertising house cleaning
and baby sitting services in a neighborhood filled with
professional women who have lots of money and very little
time.

Every time I write about small signs several people write to
tell me signs just junk up the landscape. The mayor in my
town recently took the same approach giving small sign
owners tickets and telling them to "buy advertising like
everybody else."

But not all communities feel this way. Many places aren't
bothered by signs and a few even welcome them as evidence
of a thriving small business culture.

Be careful putting signs on other people's property. Make
sure you are aware of any local ordinances regarding signs
including the area's history for enforcing their regulations.
