Just like you, I'm constantly seeing advice on how to be
successful. Usually it has to do with buying new technology,
getting a new attitude, or learning new tricks of the trade.

But over the years I've noticed something much simpler that
almost always leads to success. I'm sure you've noticed it too:
just keep moving.

No matter how little money you have, how little you know, or what
your personal problems might be, you can eventually achieve
success if you JUST KEEP TRYING.

Life seems to award the spoils to those who show up day after
day. In most businesses, the real key to success is just
being there.

Lately I'm seeing a lot of successful Internet businesses that
started out in the late 90s with no money and little idea of what
they were doing. How did they climb to the top? They didn't give
up. They just kept going, putting one foot in front of the other
day after day, refusing to throw in the towel.

Nowhere in business is this more true than in marketing. I can
just about guarantee your first ad won't sell much. It's your
sixth, seventh, 101st ads that will deliver the goods.

You'll have days that don't go right, and times when quitting
seem like the smart thing to do. But keep moving. Eventually
your refusal to give up will create momentum for you and your
project...and that always seems to lead to lucky breaks and
better times.

Write a Classified Ad That Sells

Short classified ads make terrific marketing. You can reach a
ton of people for very few dollars. Classified ads are a top way
to launch a new product, service, or idea. You can test your ad
strategy in front of real prospects without spending a fortune to
do it.

Here's how to make your classified ad effective:

1. Keep your headline short. People should be able to quickly
glance at your headline to see what your ad is about. Cute Home,
Money Saving Service, Effective Strategies, Affordable Tools, and
Get Rich are all good 2 word headlines.

2. Don't use abbreviations unless you're positive readers will
know what they mean. When in doubt, spell it out.

3. Keep your sentences short. People read ads quickly. Short
sentences help people read fast while understanding your meaning.
Incidentally, the number ONE reason ads fail is people don't
understand them. Think about that the next time your ad doesn't
produce.

4. Write your ad so it sounds different from all the other ads
around it. That can take a bit of thought and creativity, but
it's well worth the effort.

5. Once you find an ad that works, use it over and over again
for weeks, months, even years. A good ad, when seen over and
over again, becomes a super effective ad.

6. Use simple language like you would use in a conversation.
Avoid making your ad sound like a classified ad. This one thing
can give you an exceptionally effective ad.

Keyword In Your Title

Recently I spent a lot of time looking up competitors in
major search engines. By far the biggest factor in
determining who got listed in the top ten of every search
engine was this: put your main keyword--the one people
will use to search for you--as the FIRST word in your title.

If you haven't done a lot of web design, the title is that line
of text that appears in a little box at the top or bottom of
your browser. It goes in the HTML code near the top of
your page.

For example, if I were going to put up a page on writing
keywords and wanted it listed high on search engines, I
would write it:
keyword in your title gives you top search engine listings

Make sure your keyword appears in your copy several times down
the page. Search engines check to see if your page really is
about what the keyword claims it is about.

Of course, these factors alone won't give you a high ranking, but
they'll certainly help. Perhaps even more important, somebody
searching for your keyword will quickly see it in your title and
will click to your site.

That's targeted traffic to your site -- which is essentially
free.

Marketing With Your Bio

Customers love to find out more about you. I'll bet you've been
asked "How did you get into this business?" and "What did you do
before you did this?"

Give people the answers to these questions in your own BIO. Your
bio, or short biography, gives people a quick taste of who you
are, how you got where you are today, what makes you love what
you do, and -- MOST IMPORTANT -- why you can help customers.

The next time you go to my site, click on my photo. My short bio
will pop up. It tells you I worked in radio and TV for many
years before putting my business online in 1996. I've written
for AOL, Prodigy, Staples.com and thousands of magazines and
ezines. I'm always ready to help customers and my marketing
advice is always free.

If you figured this bio is designed to sell people on my ability
to help them, you're right. The bio is written so it builds the
reader's confidence that I'm qualified, have more skills than my
competitors, and I'm eager to work with customers.

If you haven't written your bio, start writing now. It only needs
to be a few paragraphs. Tell the best parts of your story, the
parts people are always interested in. Show how your history can
help the customer because you're knowledgeable, skilled,
friendly, accessible, passionate, fired up, or backed by big
names the customer knows.

Put your bio on your web site. Make sure search engines can find
it. Include part of your bio in your company brochure. Paste
your bio onto a page of your letterhead and include it with your
press release to create a press packet.

Frame your bio and put it on your office wall next to your
diplomas and industry awards.

Making some facts about your past available to customers and
prospects builds confidence and trust. Sales will follow.

Do What You Love -- Success Will Follow

Recently I saw TV's Larry King interview Donald Trump. These
days Mr. Trump is selling his advice on how to get rich. No
question, Donald Trump knows a LOT about making money, but one
thing in particular stood out in the interview.

Trump said "Do what you love -- you'll learn it faster and you'll
be successful sooner."

I'd have to say that is some of the best advice I've heard.
The old saying do what you love and the money will follow is
true. Too often I see people going into a business simply
because it is the hot thing at the moment or others are
supposedly making a ton of money at it.

While those factors can be important, the main advantage you'll
have is to work at something you truly enjoy. Loving what you do
makes you eager to get up each morning and learn new ways to make
your business better.

Customers LOVE to buy from someone who clearly enjoys their work
and has a passion for their product, service, or idea.

You can have plenty of start-up cash, a killer product or
service, and the best marketing in the world, and success will
STILL be hard to achieve if you aren't in love with the work
you're doing.

Back in the 90s, a lot of people started businesses online. A
few years later, when conditions got tougher, most were gone.
The ones who remained did so because they couldn't imagine
working anywhere else. Many have earned a great income doing what
they love over the years.

Find out what you would REALLY enjoy doing, then build a business
around it. Or consider the aspects of your current business that
you love doing most, then focus your business on those aspects.
You'll be sharper, most enthusiastic, and will enjoy your
business more.

Prospecting the way you've been doing it is often one of the best
ways to build your organization. The extremely successful mlm and
reseller people I know have done it that way for the most part.
One guy, who is HUGE in mlm, gets most of his members just
bringing up his business opportunity to absolutely everyone he
comes in contact with (be in line behind him at the supermarket
and he pitches his business to you)!

That approach isn't for everyone. You might put a classified ad
consistently in a local publication. Depending on laws and
customs in your community, you could place flyers or door hangers
around neighborhoods.

Put a sign in the back window of your car: "I made
an extra $1,000 this month.. I'll show you how -- phone number."
That works well these days when everybody has a cell phone.

If you want to build your organization nationwide, write articles
and send them to ezines and sites. This builds your name as an
expert in your industry and more people will want to work with

Four Common Myths About Press Releases

Just about every new business starts off by sending a press
release to media. That's a great idea. But don't stop there.
It takes more PR on a consistent basis to bring in the BIG media
coverage for your business, new product, service or idea.

First, let's dispel a few common myths about press releases:

Myth -- "Newspapers and other media WILL use my press release
exactly the way I wrote it." Wrong. Because you aren't paying
to have media print your release, they can use it or lose it as
they see fit. Often, reporters will take your information and
rewrite it or work it into another story.

Myth -- "Your press release should be like a sales letter."
Actually, your press release should read more like a news or
feature story in a newspaper. Your release shouldn't read like
an ad or sales letter on a web page. If it does, editors will
pass over your release.

Myth -- "Every word of my release has to be perfect, because
editors will be reading it carefully." Absolutely not. Editors
decide to read a release based on the headline. Then they quickly
skim the top of the release to see if it's information they can
use.

Myth -- "If you don't get sales right away, your press release is
a failure." It can take weeks or even months before media use
your information. Look at a series of press releases as a way to
build media awareness of you and your business. Let editors know
you are a consistently good source of quality information about
your industry. Reporters and writers will be more likely to
contact you when they need your kind of information.

The bottom line: Start sending out press releases now and keep it
up every month. Response will start slowly, then build. Free
media publicity is far more powerful than paid advertising, but
it takes time and work to achieve.

Here are a few simple tips to make sure your packaging sells.

1. Your package should get attention, then educate the buyer.
Yellow is an eye-grabbing color. Bold print should tell what the
product is, how it can be used, and even the kind of customer
it's designed for.

2. Make sure your package protects the product (stores and
shippers are concerned with that), but isn't too difficult for
the customer to open. I often find a package is so tough you
practically ruin the product getting the package open. Getting
your packaging right can improve repeat business.

3. Try to reinforce your company image in your packaging. Use
the same design elements from one product's package to another.
When customers are impressed with one of your products, they will
immediately see the similarities with your other product packages
and buy more.

4. As the old saying goes, you can't tell a book by its cover,
but the cover sells the book. Packaging is particularly important
in bricks and mortar retail locations. Packaging is less
important for mail order.

Package design is a specialty. There are lots of expert
designers who work from their homes while completing design jobs
for firms both large and small. You may want to enlist the help
of a freelance designer to make your next package a resounding
success.

We distribute releases through PR Newswire. They can focus on all
the media in the Los Angeles area, then additionally send to
about 5,000 major media nationwide (including all the big ones:
from NBC to Yahoo, etc). They don't give me a complete list, but
it's about as comprehensive as anyone needs. They also send to a
shorter list of appropriate industry publications they choose.
Again, I don't get to see this list, but these guys are the best
in the business for 50 years and know what they're doing.

Their service is $300, a tad pricy but worth it. I don't list
this on my site, so email me and I'll be happy to set it up for
you (happy to do that for anybody who reads this.)
