Rewarding the Customer

Business owners often underestimate the power of a reward.
Customers love it when you do something extra for them. Your
generosity shows them that you care about their ultimate
satisfaction, not just about the sale of the moment.

In fact, a percentage of your monthly marketing budget should be
dedicated solely to rewarding the customer. That means sending
out postcards for discounts, notifications of special sales, even
giving free gifts and samples.

One thing you should always thank or reward customers for is
referrals. For instance, if you run a salon, let your customers
know that they get a free haircut with each new client they
refer. If you own a bakery, send out a coupon for a free cookie
or loaf of bread when a previous customer brings in a friend.

How to Handle Rejection

Part of selling anything is handling rejection. It's always
great when a prospect says "I'm so glad to see you. This is just
what I need!" But the law of averages says most of the people
you come in contact with won't be that enthusiastic.

There are so many ads and people trying to get us to spend
money that most of us put on a stern face any time a sales
person approaches. This doesn't mean we dislike the sales
person, just that we're getting psyched up to hold our ground.

Of course, a good sales person realizes this and works to set our
reservations at ease, helping us to relax and understand how the
sales person may be able to solve our problems.

Keep this in mind when you are selling something. It doesn't
matter if you are selling cars, telling a neighbor about your MLM
opportunity, or using email to sell yourself to a prospective
employer.

Rejection is part of the game. Realize people aren't rejecting
you personally, but the situation. In most cases they simply
aren't ready to buy at this time. No doesn't usually mean no,
but not right now. A week, month, or year from the now the
prospect who rejected your sales pitch may come looking for
you wanting to buy.

Setting Up The First Sales Meeting

Some things, especially expensive products and services, are
best sold in person. Lots of business people close sales on
90 percent of these person-to-person meetings.

Once you find a prospect who is interested, try to find out if
they can be a serious customer. Many people are too
difficult to work with, don't have the money to afford your
product or service, or have a problem you aren't equipped
to handle.

Quickly discover if the prospect falls into one of these
categories, then politely end the conversation before
scheduling a meeting.

Rather than a "sales meeting," call your first eye-to-eye an
analysis, consultation, needs assessment, briefing, or
diagnosis.

Position your first meeting as an opportunity for the
prospect to get valuable information that will immediately
help to improve their situation.

Don't be afraid to charge for the first meeting. Fifteen years
ago most prospects expected the first meeting to be free,
but more than half now expect to pay for the help they get.

Rent a Mailing List

Marketing almost always works better when it is tightly
targeted. And you can't get much more targeted than a good
mailing list. Mailing list brokers give you choices of lists for
just about any lifestyle group, neighborhood, industry, or behavior
(like people who always buy your product or service this time of
year).

Because North Americans move a lot, lists quickly go out of
date. A good list has recently compiled names and addresses.
These lists cost more, but they save you lots of money by
getting your letter to the right prospects with a minimal number
of undeliverables.

As you can imagine, a good list is valuable. List brokers don't
sell their lists. They only rent them. And don't try to cheat
by sending more than once or loaning the list to a friend. Brokers
plant their own addresses in the list to let them monitor how the
list is used.

Mailing lists come in three types:
* Response Lists consist of people who are known to buy
certain types of products and services. Ever buy a product then
suddenly get lots of mail for similar products?

* Occupant Lists give you names and addresses for a certain area
or zip code.

* Compiled Lists are names pulled from phone books, ads in
publications, and media subscription lists.

Write a Personal Letter

Personal letters are very powerful. Get a big stack of mail from
the letter carrier and I'll bet you open the hand-addresses
letter from a friend first. We often talk about making web site
copy and newspaper ads carry the power of a letter. Why not
market your business by simply writing a personal letter?

Keep your letter to a single page.

Make paragraphs short. I like three line paragraphs, but five or
six lines per paragraph is also fine. Longer paragraphs make
your copy look dense and a long read to someone who is in a
hurry.

Underlining and CAPITALS are good for a sales letter, but keep
them out of your personal letter.

Sign your letter in a different color ink than the color it is
printed in. Include a P.S. Sixty percent of readers read the
P.S. before they read the rest of the letter. Have the P.S.
restate your offer, your time limit, or urge the reader to call
or email you.

Refine Your Marketing Budget for The First Quarter

After a few years, most businesses establish a set formula for
determining their marketing budget, usually a fixed percentage of
revenue. But when economic times get tough, it's time to make a
few alterations.

The mistake businesses make is to simply cut the marketing budget
when they experience a downturn in revenue. Big no, no. In an
effort to protect their bottom line, they are more likely to
bottom out.

Instead of cutting your marketing budget, try making a few
refinements:

1. Concentrate on past and current customers. They are more
likely to purchase from you, even during difficult economic
times. Mail to them more often, call them more often and let them
know about special promotions more often.

2. Instead of cutting your marketing budget, refine your
marketing message. Customers will be thinking of how they can get
more for less, so focus on the value rather than the low price.
Keep your prices the same and use special promotions
intermittently.

3. Take a closer look at who your real prospects are. Instead of
mass mailing, focus on a more targeted audience. Profile your
prospects and find those who have similarities to your past
customers. This technique will save you money and elicit a higher
response rate.

Traditionally running an infomercial campaign costs several
hundred thousand dollars to one million per week. A less costly
option might be to run 30 second versions of your infomercial and
have TV stations take a commission on sales or referrals. A few
years ago that was unheard of, but these days I'm seeing it more
and more as it gets far harder to sell TV ad slots. You'll get
the lowest rates from cable TV in less urban areas.
