Make Your ABOUT Page Sell

It's interesting how many web site visitors quickly click to
the "about" page. This is the page that tells who runs the
business, where it is located, and why they do what they do.

With all the uncertainty some folks still feel about buying
online, it is only natural they want to find out more about
the business before they seriously consider buying the
product or service.

Include your photo, a photo of your staff, or a picture of
your building on the "about" page. Be sure to give your
address, one or more email addresses visitors can use, and a
phone number. Anything less makes some people feel like
you've got something to hide.

The "about" page is also a good place to tell your story.
People love to hear about how you got started. They want
to know what it is you like about your business and how
you work to help customers. Give people a good story and
they will remember it long after they have forgotten the
particulars of the product they came to see.

Get On Bulletin Boards--AGAIN!

Several years ago it was a common marketing strategy to
post on discussion groups and bulletin boards that catered
to people in your industry. It's time to take another look at
this tried-and-true promotion method.

I have noticed a lot of TOP bulletin boards don't get many
people posting. This won't be evident at first, but if you
come back several days in a row, you won't see much has
changed.

Apparently there are still a lot of people visiting bulletin
boards. When I added a brief tip to several discussion
groups, we tracked a number of people clicking from the
bulletin board to my web site.

Cruise through several bulletin boards that appeal to people
who would buy from your business. Offer a suggestion,
give an opinion, or post a question. Be sure to include your
full name at the bottom of your post along with your web
address and a line that gives a reason for visiting your site.

Put POWER In Your Headlines

Just about any kind of marketing needs headlines:
Web sites, sales letters, classified ads, and business cards all
work much better if they have a clear, exciting headline.

I like to start a headline with an action word (or verb if you
think back to high school English). EARN 20% more,
TAKE time to relax, FEEL better fast--all start with an
action word that stresses a change for the reader.

Focus your headline on how your product or service will
make your customer FEEL. While most of us like to think
we make a purchase based on logic, studies show emotion
plays a big role.

Customers feel good when your headline promises to
remove something that is bothering them or add something
that will make them feel wealthier, sexier, more relaxed, or
loved.

Finally, resist the temptation to be cute with headlines.
Above all else, your headline must be clear. Plain words
often communicate your meaning best to hurried customers.

Sell With Photos Online

Recently I found an interesting piece of real estate on the
Web. I emailed the realtor to find out more about it. When
he learned I was interested, he used a digital camera to take
photos of the property. He then put them up on a web page
with my name on it.

The whole process probably only took him a few minutes,
yet he was able to provide a CUSTOMIZED advertising
page directed to my specific interests. That is targeted
marketing at its most powerful.

Pictures are the classic way to sell a product. From cars, to
houses, to furniture, to gum, it is MUCH easier to make a
sale if your marketing materials include photos.

Try the personalized photo page approach for customers
who can't view your product in person. Place a short
descriptive caption under each photo.

Prices of digital cameras and software have come way
down. Or, do it the "old-fashioned" way with a scanner.
Online photo sites like shutterfly.com will put your pictures
on a web page. Simply mail them the film.

Q: Kevin,

I am the owner of Computer Doctor of San Antonio, and I am just
trying to see what I can do to create publicity stunts or get
media attention. I've tried advertising in the local papers
around town, went on a morning segment show on tv and just
haven't seen any good results from anything I've done. I'm not
sure what to do or what would be good to use to create media
exposure. I fix and repair computers, build custom computers, do
networking and can offer tips or advice to people on what to get

You probably just have to keep at it. Sounds like you're doing
all the right things. It usually takes several on-air appearances

Often word of mouth is where most of a small business' customers
come from (that's true with mine!)

China, Mexico, and elsewhere beyond our shores. What we don't
hear much about are the jobs that are multiplying in our region.

Use Email to Communicate With Customers

When I first started my little Internet business, I tried to
emphasize that email was my primary form of communication. It
was simply more cost-effective and time-efficient than the
telephone.

Sure, I still talked with some customers on the phone, especially
in the early days of the Internet when a lot of people needed
phone contact to feel comfortable. But the vast majority of
orders came in after writing back and forth with customers via
email.

A few years later, we hired more staff and added a toll free
number prominently featured on every page of DrNunley.com. Phone
calls naturally picked up, but email is STILL by far our number
one communication method. Why?

The telephone is spoken communication. Sometimes when we talk to
others, what we mean doesn't come through accurately. We tend to
talk in circles, going back over the important points again and
again. We also tend to miss things we meant to say, or get
flustered and say the wrong thing. You can't re-read a telephone
conversation to make sure you got it right.

However, when you write, our ideas must march logically along,
one after another. We can take the time to plan out what to say
and how to say it, and we're less likely to leave things out.
You can even go back and make changes before you send, and have a
permanent record of what was said.

These simple differences between talking and writing may be at
the root of why so many businesses find they make their real
sales from email, and not from the telephone.
