Promoting With Newspaper Classifieds

There is a belief that businesses use newspaper classifieds
because they can't afford big ads. That is not always true.
There are many cases where an ad in the classifieds has
pulled better than a big display ad elsewhere in the same
paper.

To figure out if your business can profit from newspaper
classifieds, think like someone who is reading them. Most
people are looking for a cheaper used item (like baby cloths
and computers), an item that is hard to find in stores (a
telescope), cars, jobs, dates, and services for home owners.

Your computer book might sell well in the computers
section. You can sometimes get the classifieds manager to
give you your own category, complete with heading.

A friend did well selling personal safety products by placing
classified ads in cities with high crime rates. He might have
done even better putting his ads in cheap suburban weeklies,
where FEAR of crime is often highest.

Top selling words for classifieds are: free, you, value,
proven, and reliable.

Blending Keywords Into Your Web Copy

You can put important keywords in your title and meta tag,
but it won't do any good with search engines unless those
same words are also in your copy.

It is important to get your search words and search phrases
to blend in naturally and logically with your copy. You will
do better to concentrate on five or six keywords rather than
trying to work in 20.

If salami, grapes, and wholesale are your keywords, write
"We have searched all of Italy for spicy salami and fat juicy
grapes. No one offers these at such low wholesale prices."

Experts now say you will have better luck with two
and three word phrases. People search with multi-word
phrases, yet most sites don't list them.

No matter how high you get listed on search engines, you
won't be able to convert those millions of visitors to buyers
unless your copy makes sense.

I've seen a few sites where the owner threw keywords in
willy nilly. It might work for a not-so-smart search engine
robot, but it makes the copy confusing and unconvincing.

There is some truth in that. You need a strong start for an
article, otherwise people won't spend the time to read it. The
end of most articles online include the "author paragraph" with
your web site and contact information. That's what brings you
results from your article, so it's very important. But beyond
that, your article needs to address a problem the reader is
experiencing. That's by far the most important factor in creating
a good article.

Set Customers At Ease

It isn't hard to set a customer at ease in a face-to-face
meeting. And it's worth the effort. A customer who feels
comfortable is your best bet for making a sale.

Greet the customer with a hearty, heart-felt smile. Go
ahead and give them your best grin. Some people don't
smile much. More than a few sales people have spent time
in front of the mirror at home practicing their smile.

Keep in mind this won't work for every country in the
world. The French think we Americans are simpletons
when we smile at a stranger.

Let your eyes meet theirs. This builds trust. People have a
hard time trusting someone who won't look them in the eye.
Yesterday a sales person was exceptionally friendly, yet she
looked away during the entire purchase. It was a small
thing, but I'll bet it makes most customers feel a little weird.

Give your customer a good firm handshake. This rule
works in most places and for most people, but there are
exceptions. In many parts of the South, women are
expected to shake hands gently and men who grab a
woman's hand like it's a baseball bat are thought of as a bit
uncouth. Here in the American West, women shake hands
as firmly as men.

In a formal setting, give your first and last name along with
the name of your organization. In more relaxed settings,
you can simply give your first name (this is especially true in
California for some reason).

I have great respect for people who work retail. They
spend hours on their feet, work weekends and holidays.
Even with all that time on the job, many of your customers
who also work today's long weeks may not be able to make

Even the smallest retail store can extend their ours around
the clock by having a website. On the Net, where use often
increases after 10pm, your site can answer questions, let
customers browse, and take orders.

Make sure the CLOSED sign on your store says: This
location is closed, but we're ALWAYS OPEN at

Keep in mind that a growing number of people first search
Google or some other search engine BEFORE they check the
Yellow Pages.

It's generally best to have links going both ways, but there are
circumstances where one way links can work to your benefit.
If your site is targeted to people working in your industry,
have a page of links to resources that can help them do their
jobs better, earn more, save time. People will give you credit
for knowing where they can get help.

Some years ago I had a page of links to favorite sites. For some
reason, search engines jumped right on this and always listed
this particular page quite high. The reason is it appeared to
search engines as a place where people could get information and
direction.

Brochure With A Pocket

One of the problems with brochures is they go out of date
rather quickly. You can spend a lot of money to get a great
looking brochure designed and printed, then realize six
months later that much of the information is no longer
accurate.

I have tossed out boxes of brochures because our industry
had moved beyond what the brochure promised. This is a
particular problem if you are in a technical field where
things change quickly.

One good solution is to create a brochure with a pocket on
the last page. You can stuff updated sheets of information
in the pocket. Changing prices, new developments, even
your new location can all be included in the update sheet for
the pocket.

The rest of the brochure can give information that doesn't
change often. You can cover your company history, some
of the key people in your organization, why your product or
service saves time and money, and tips for smartly using
your product.

Another way to make brochures go further in quickly
changing times is to avoid the brochure all together.
Instead, print your information on both sides of a single
sheet of paper. Use higher quality paper, maybe even two
colors of ink (red for the headline, black for the copy) to
make your one sheet look nicer than a flyer.

Great Time To Buy Banner Ads

There isn't as much money going into banner advertising as
their used to be. Many of the big Internet companies that
were putting millions into banners aren't around any more.

Banner prices have dropped dramatically. A few years
ago you could pay $35 per thousand prospects who saw
your banner. This year you can get thousands of
"impressions" for as little as two or three dollars.

This may be your best time ever to load up on banner ads
without spending a fortune. Banners don't get the incredible
40 percent response they sometimes got in the mid-90's.
Response rates are now reported in the .1 to .5 range. A
good targeted banner can pull a bit better.

While you won't get a landslide of sales from most banner
buys, you can still get respectable results. Banners compare
favorably to the response rates radio, TV, newspapers, and
direct mail generally pull. Results usually get better when
your banner has been up for several weeks or months. Only
20 to 40 percent of sales come during the first month.

Animated banners get more attention than static ones. Flash
banners are getting more affordable and a growing number
of people can view them. You might try to keep your graphics
simple so the banner will load quickly for the percent
of users who still have slow dial-up access. The price of

The Top Four Kinds of Ads

Most of us tend to use the same kind of ad over and over.
If your ad is pulling lots of sales, stay with it. But if
results aren't quite what you're looking for, try switching to
one of these top four types of ads.

1. Your ad can simply work to build your company's image.
Most of the banner ads big corporations have around the
Net are designed to do nothing more than familiarize lots of
people with the company name. A big chunk of the ads on
network TV do the same thing. And that's not bad. Most
customers buy from a company they have heard of.

2. Your ad can work to build awareness for a particular
product or service you offer. I often write articles on press
releases just so I can make people aware that we offer a
press release writing and distribution service. An ad
promoting awareness for a product can work especially well
if you place the ad in an industry or special interest
publication that has readers who would consider your
product a big deal.

3. Have your ad pull in interested prospects. Instead of
having the ad do the selling, simply get lots of leads. Sell to
them using other methods like phone calls, personal visits, a
sales letter, or via email. Offer a free consultation, sample,
or report.

4. Finally, your ad can make the sale all by itself. Be sure
to include the price and directions on how to buy. Make
sure your ad asks for the sale. "Get it now!" gives a lot of
prospects the permission they seem to need to make a
purchase.

How To Get The Appointment

Many businesses and professionals make most of their sales
by making an appointment for a personal meeting with the
prospect. Here are some ways to get the appointment set
up with a quick phone call.

Start by selling the appointment rather than the product or
service. Don't try to sell the product over the phone. Take
things one at a time. Get the appointment set up on the
phone, then sell your product or service during the meeting.

Stay away from questions that can be answered with a yes
or no. If you give the prospect a chance to say no and
avoid the meeting most will. Instead, ask questions that
force a positive answer. "Which would be better to meet,
Wednesday or Thursday?"

When a prospect says she isn't convinced your service or
product is worth her time, ask for her help. "What would
you have to hear from me to be convinced I can do what I
say?"

You may find it is best not to sell them, but to help the
customer for a fee. The slight difference in attitude can get
the sale.

Simple Way to Speak to Groups

3) You can take this clever psychological approach. Get
people excited about your idea at the start. Then point out
what is wrong with the idea. Show things can go sour.

original idea into a good one again.

Make Your Ad Clear and Passionate

I'll tell you something writers don't like to admit. I don't
do much revision. I write it once, then go through and fix
the problems.

But there is one key to effective advertising that absolutely
demands you give your ad copy a second draft.

After you have written your ad or sales letter, set it aside.
Come back to it later in the day, or even better, several days
later.

When you come back, look for places in your copy where
the average customer might not understand what you are
talking about.

For example, in the sentence I just wrote, some people
might not be familiar with the word "copy." Instead, I
might say "look for places in your ad."

Give your copy the grandmother test. If your grandmother
can figure out what you're talking about, chances are most
people can.

Finally, put some passion in your ad. Plain facts rarely
sell anything. Be bold. Be shocking. Put some romance
and flesh and blood in your copy.

Your best bet is to design a great site for yourself, then
get a few businesses in the health industry to let you design
sites for them (maybe even at very low cost.) After that you
can contact other health businesses and use the sites you
already created as examples of what you can do for them.

A great sales letter would work well for email and regular
mail, plus you could put the copy on a page of your site.
