How to Headline Your Business for Success

Believe it or not, a bad title or headline will turn your
prospects away quicker than just about anything else. When you're
trying to promote, you need people to stick around long enough to
hear your sales pitch, and a bad article title or sales letter
headline will turn people off before they even realize it.

Your title or headline is your very first opportunity to make an
impression on your prospects. If that impression is a positive,
informative, creative, or exciting one, you're off to a very good
start. Similarly, if that first impression is boring, worn-out,
or confusing, your prospects probably won't even get beyond the
first line.

When writing titles or headlines, think about your audience. No
matter who they are, titles should flow from the lips easily, and
give readers some idea of what they'll learn by reading on. At
the same time, they should be short enough to be memorable.

Beyond being clear and informative in your title, there are a few
enhancements you can use. Remember when you learned about rhyme
in elementary school? Well, rhyme is very good creative tool for
writing zippy headlines and titles. A rhyming title is catchy and
fun, almost compelling your audience to keep reading.

Alliteration is another great way to dress up a plain-jane title.
Alliteration is the repetition of a particular consonant sound at
the beginning, end, or middle of two or more words (i.e. terrific
titles). An alliterative title is easy to say, easy to remember,
and just plain fun to read.

A good title or headline gives your audience the idea that your
article, sales letter, or other copy is going to be a fun,
entertaining, or informative read, which is an absolute necessity
if you want your first impression to lead to a second chance.

Sell Your Product or Service at Any Price

People always choose to buy the product with the lowest price,
right? Nope! That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Do most
people buy their cars from the junkyard? Or their TVs from pawn
shops? Of course not. There is one thing that customers value
more than getting a good deal, and that is eliminating risk.

When two products or services are equal, a potential customer
will choose the cheaper one. What you need to do is unbalance the
scales to ensure that your product is obviously the less risky
choice; that it’s worth the money.

A web designer friend of mine recently entered into a bidding war
for a project. His bid was for $70 per hour, which was fair
considering his experience and work quality. However, he was
bidding against an inexperienced teenager working out of his
basement, willing to charge only $10 an hour.

The company offering the project actually considered basement boy
with his dirt-cheap rates. That is, until my friend pointed out
that they would get exactly what they paid for, and when their
end product turned out to be junk, they could come to him and pay
his rates to do it over again.

The company realized that choosing Mr. $10 an hour posed certain
risks, and that they might end up paying even more if they went
with him. In the end, my friend won the bidding war, even though
his rates were 7X his competitor's.

What is the lesson to be learned here? Offer the better product
and most people will have enough sense to pay the price you ask.

licenses or permits and do just fine. However, it's a good idea
to check to see what requirements your state and community have

Consulting Your Way to Profits

We hear a lot about North America's manufacturing jobs moving to
China, Mexico, and elsewhere beyond our shores. What we don't
hear much about are the jobs that are multiplying in our region.
More and more, many of us are becoming a kind of consultant. Our
jobs involve figuring out people's problems and providing
solutions.

Here's why.

We live in a rich society by world standards. North Americans
are educated, can afford many things in life, and demand
solutions to their problems. This is where you and I come in.
We can provide those solutions.

When people ask what's the quickest way to make money with a new
business, I tell them:

Find a niche where you can provide help and answers to people
looking for that specific kind of information and assistance.

Study up on that part of your field. Know about the major
problems and how to solve them. Look for the newest solutions
and uncover forgotten fixes that could work again. You'll learn
a lot by visiting your local library, then calling and emailing
other experts not in direct competition with you. In other
words, create your own do-it-yourself education program.

Use your consulting skill to give customers something extra when
they buy your product or service. You'll sell more and customers
will keep coming back.

service. You only need a handful of really good partners to give
your sales a huge boost. Make sure you can help your partner
business look good, create talk, and build customer loyalty.

and print media press releases for my company. I came across your

In your opinion, where would be the best (and cheapest, if
possible) on-line source for submitting the press-releases?

Going to media sites, getting their submission addresses, and
emailing your press release is an excellent method. This works
particularly well for reaching your local and regional media.
Email is the preferred method to receive a release because it's
already in the reporter's computer and it's easy to forward to
the correct person.

Train With Your Own Video

Do you hire lots of employees or enlist many new sales reps
or affiliates? Consider training them with a video.

In this age where most of us where raised on hours of
television each day, a simple video is often the easiest way
to learn new material. Often, you can give a new hire a
printed manual and it will never get read. Studies show a
speaker in front of an audience only connects with about 10
percent of the people most of the time.

You can create your own training video with a home video
camera and some simple editing equipment. Go one step
better and hire a small local video production firm. Just
about every community has at least one (Get in touch with
Ron Kirby at Kirby Video Productions in Roy, Utah who has
worked with my customers all over America.)

There is a lot more important info to learn in a training
video than in your average TV sit-com. Have the
announcer speak slowly. Leave gaps in the audio with
plenty of time to visually demonstrate how something is
done.

You can also feature your training video at trade fairs and
conventions. It may be just what is needed to explain how
your business, product, service, or idea works. Also
consider streaming your video from your web site.

People love contests. They love the anticipation, the suspense,
and the thrill of believing they would win something...anything.

I know several people who will call in to every radio contest
they hear about, even if they don't know what the prize is. The
simple idea of winning makes them want to enter.

Statistically, about 20% of the public will enter a contest if
asked. That may not sound like a huge percentage, but in total
numbers, that's a lot of people. If you asked 1,000 people to
enter your contest and 200 of them did, that's 200 more people
who know who you are.

Contests can really get people familiar with your business. And
if you put on a show or stage an event along with it, you could
get great word of mouth or even end up on the news. Give away a
product or service that relates to your business. Mention your
contest on your letterhead, website, and business cards. Do a
postcard campaign or send out a press release.

Be sure to let the public and other entrants know who won the
contest. This follow-up will remind people about the contest and
put your name back in their heads.

Tripod.com. They have an easy design system that lets you design
the site yourself. Then get a domain name for $14 at
http://oriweb.com. You can have your domain name forward to your
free Tripod site. You can put PayPal payment buttons on your site
for free. PayPal gives you code you can paste onto your pages.
It's super simple (which is why you see so many sites taking
PayPal). Then go to http://sendfree.com and get your free
multiple autoresponder. You can use that to deliver info to your
customers while building your email list.

Then write yourself a bunch of articles and distribute them all
over the Internet at http://isnare.com They charge about $2 for
distribution, which is one heck of a deal.

Let Old Customers Bring New Business

We all know it's not easy luring in new customers. So what can
we do? Simply get your existing customers to buy from you again.

So how do you keep old customers coming back? Try offering the
service or product they have bought before, but this time with an
added incentive. You could not only design the web site, but also
promote it free for the first month.

You could also offer them an additional product or service that
compliments the one they already purchased. Try offering a
companion book, or a newsletter subscription on the same topic.

Each time you add a new product to your line, blast out
another email or direct mail campaign to your customer base
announcing your addition. Offer special pricing incentives to
show you appreciate past customers, calling it a "special thank
you for your business."

Write Powerful Headlines for a Great First Impression

Headlines are the first, and often the most important part of
your web site, sales letter, classified ad, email, or business
card. And if your headline is a good one, the rest of your copy
is likely to be read.

How do you make sure your headline gets attention?

I like to start a headline with an action word (or verb if you
think back to high school English): EARN 20% more, TAKE time to
relax, LOSE weight fast, PROFIT right away. All of these start
with an action word that stresses an enabling change for the
reader.

Focus the rest of your headline on how your product or service
will make your customer FEEL. While most of us like to think we
make a purchase based on logic, studies show emotion plays a big
role: LOSE WEIGHT FAST and feel sexy again!

Customers feel good when your headline promises to remove
something that is bothering them or add something that will make
them feel wealthier, sexier, more relaxed, or loved.

Above all else, your headline must be clear. Using plain, easy-
to-read words will communicate your meaning best to customers in
a hurry.

Your best bet is to call the cable company in your area and ask
for the sales department. Usually they can give you much better
rates if you buy a number of spots to run over a period of time.
Politely let them know that you are also looking into newspapers,
radio, and broadcast TV. Media ad sales people hate to let your
ad budget go elsewhere. Ad rates are almost always negotiable.
