How To Call Radio Talk Shows

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Just about every city has several radio talk shows. Many feature
programs covering all kinds of community and business issues.

Get on these shows from time to time and thousands of people will
know about you. You might even be able to slip in your business
name so the audience knows where to find you (but don't be
blatant about it.)

Write down the call-in numbers of several shows. Keep them next
to the phone so you can call in a flash when you hear an
opportunity.

Listen to the show to figure out what the main topic is. You
won't want get on the air with your comment about local business
if the host is talking about the Middle East.

Call at the beginning of the show. It is easier to get on the
air then. As the show goes on, more listeners will become
interested and the number of people calling will increase.

Get right to the point. Tell the producer what you want to say
on the air. When the host answers, tell her you enjoy the show
and make your point quickly. If the show has a guest, ask a
question after you make your brief comment.

Don't give up. You may not get on half the time, but persistence
will eventually make you a well-known caller.

Make Yourself Famous on Discussion Groups

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Nothing gets sales like being an expert. When people know
you can help their situation with experience and knowledge,
they don't mind paying for whatever you suggest.

One of the Net's best tools to turn yourself into a
recognized expert in your field are discussion groups.
These can be UseNet newsgroups (go to Google and click
"groups" to find them) or they can be
discussion groups on web sites. There are also email
discussion groups, check out Yahoo Groups and Topica.

Pick no more than two or three groups to participate in.
Join, then hide and watch for a while. Get to know what
kinds of topics are discussed and who the main characters
are. Many groups have at least one "troll under the bridge"
who seems to thrive on running down anyone who takes a
different view point.

When someone asks a question, be the one to give them a
good, solid answer. Make it a goal to answer a question
once or twice each week. Keep your answer strictly
non-commercial but DO include your commercial signature
file at the end sending people to your site and email.

Several top successful business folks have told me their only
method of advertising was participation in discussion
groups. It generated many a customers over a period of
months.

Q: Kevin,

I had an idea to do a concert in the park to protest a
crooked airport rennovation project. Should do a press release
for this?

Thanks,

Erik

A: Erik,

Yes! Many times you can just call your local media the
morning of the concert to let them know when, where, and why.
Most media, especially TV, will be right down to check
it out, particularly because of the protest situation. Good
luck!

Why This Is a Great Time to Promote a Small Business

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Recently we learned the consumer confidence index had
fallen to one of its lower points. Mostly this index
measures how secure people feel about their jobs. If you think
there is a chance you will earn less money or get laid off, you
probably won't buy as many things.

That is terrible news for businesses that sell items like
computers, cars, and refrigerators. But the drop in consumer
confidence isn't bad for everyone.

Some businesses have seen a big increase in sales recently.
Here's why.

When people think their job might disappear, they start to look
for new ways to earn a living. This can include starting a small
business of their own or ramping up the small business they
already run on the side.

Business opportunities, how-to books and courses, and services
for home-based business are all selling especially well.

Market these things during hard economic times by stressing the
opportunity they give customers. Stress the dream they enable.
Show how buying from you can help a customer keep hope alive.

Market With Education

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

One of the biggest reasons customers don't buy or don't buy again
is they aren't educated about your product or service. They
never fully understand how to use your product or even why it is
good for them.

Make sure you work to educate customers. Give them a tutorial on
your web site that answers common questions and tells customers
how to use your product or service.

Show customers ways your product or service could under deliver.
Explain why and how things can be corrected to bring the best
possible results.

For example, I spend a lot of time educating customers about
advertising and PR. Many have the impression they can send out a
press release and dozens of reporters will immediately call
asking for interviews. In reality, editors often use a press
release as a news story without telling the business. Rather
than wait for the phone to ring, you do better to monitor the
hits to your web site. Get a sudden bump and you know your press
release has been used by the media somewhere.

If I take time to explain this to customers, they know what to
expect. We get fewer dissatisfied customers and more who know
how to get the maximum results for their business.

If you have employees, make it a point to educate them about your
products, services, and business. The more they know, the more
they can help educate customers. It's a critical part of selling
and marketing.

Q: Kevin,

Thank you so much for all of your past help. It has been quite
beneficial. I have written an e-book which has been helpful to
many restaurants. So, I decided to list some testimonials, which
I've never done before.

Can you please tell me if I'm supposed to ask the person giving
the testimonial to put it in writing? Or, can I take a verbal
one?

Also, do I have to ask for permission to use their name
or is that already implied in the process?

Thanks,

Richard

A: Richard,

Good to hear from you. Testimonials are a great idea.
I've never had anyone object to having their testimonial
on my site. Usually I ask if it's ok, then put their testimonial
up. And it's fine from there.

Best,

Kevin Nunley

Refine Your Marketing Budget for The First Quarter

By Kevin Nunley
http://www.drnunley.com

After a few years, most businesses establish a set formula for
determining their marketing budget, usually a fixed percentage of
revenue. And now, with 2008 approaching, it's time to get yours
set for the first quarter of next year.

It seems times are getting tougher for many of us. The mistake
businesses make is to simply cut the marketing budget when they
experience a downturn in revenue. Big no no! In an effort to
protect their bottom line, they are more likely to bottom out.

Instead of cutting your marketing budget, try making a few
refinements:

1. Concentrate on past and current customers. They are more
likely to purchase from you, even during difficult economic
times. Mail to them more often, call them more often and let them
know about special promotions more often.

2. Instead of cutting your marketing budget, refine your
marketing message. Customers will be thinking of how they can get
more for less, so focus on the value rather than the low price.
Keep your prices the same and use special promotions
intermittently.

3. Take a closer look at who your real prospects are. Instead of
mass mailing, focus on a more targeted audience. Profile your
prospects and find those who have similarities to your past
customers. This technique will save you money and elicit a higher
response rate.

Reach Isn't Everything in Ezines

By Kevin Nunley
http://www.drnunley.com

In advertising, the number of people who see your ad is called
"reach." You might figure the more subscribers an email
newsletter reaches, the more results your ad will generate. Not
exactly.

Some of the Internet's biggest ezines often don't get very good
response. One client told me, "I advertised in a 'zine that goes
to 600,000 and didn't get a single reply." On the other hand,
some smaller ezines (like Greg Landry's health and fitness
newsletter) always pull well for advertisers.

Why? A lot has to do with how closely people read an ezine.
Ezines that consistently provide valuable information on a
particular popular topic tend to do best. Readers open each issue
eagerly expecting helpful or interesting information they can put
to work now.

An ezine that is all or mostly ads won't pull as well for you
unless the ads are all focused on a topic that readers want info
on. For example, classic car collectors would appreciate an ad
sheet filled with ads selling hard-to-find cars.

Q: Kevin,

I was curious as to your feeling on the following:

Someone who markets on the internet told me to not
submit the same press release to a lot of submission
services. She said that I should have at least 3
different press releases. If I didn't want to write 3
different ones, to at least change the paragraphs
around so search engines would pick them up.

Thanks,

Kathy

A: Kathy,

Most press release services send to all the same media.
Almost all are radio, TV, and newspapers. Search engines
can play a role, but mostly the idea is to get covered by
media.

It's a good idea to put your press release on your web site.
Reporters researching a topic will find your release.

Best,

Kevin Nunley

Star In Your Own TV Commercials

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Some of the most effective TV ads feature a business owner as
spokesperson. Sometimes the owner is serious. Others project a
silly or goofy image. Still others go for a down home feel that
makes customers comfortable.

Realize from the start that shooting a TV commercial takes lots
of time and effort. Dave Thomas, who has appeared in Wendy's
commercials for years, says it takes all day to shoot including
dozens of takes. "You have to be in the mood of the spot," Dave
says. "It takes a lot of work and I rarely feel like I get the
scene right."

Don't worry if you don't consider yourself model beautiful. With
all the perfect faces on TV these days, customers often respond
to someone who looks and sounds like a regular person.

If you aren't very good at acting, don't try to do a dramatic
scene. Unless you're going for cheesy, bring in professional
actors to do the dramatic lines. You can appear in the
spokesperson role.

The biggest risk in appearing in your own TV commercials is
coming off looking like you have a big ego. Don't let the camera
crew or ad agency talk you into something you don't do well.

How To Use Your Own Email Course To Pull Traffic and Boost Sales

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

I'm a big fan of email courses, those 7 lesson emails delivered
to your in box. People love them. A good email course gives you
bite-sized, in-depth information and training on a topic you care
about. And email courses are almost always FREE.

On top of that, an email course doesn't require you to set aside
time to drive across town to a classroom. You can read the
course any time you want--at 4am when you can't sleep, during a
break at work, even print it off and read it on the train.

Make your email course cover a specific topic a LOT of your
customers care about. Think for a moment. What question do you
hear over and over again from customers.

How can I sell my used car in a down economy? How can I get an
extra job? How can I make sure my kids succeed in school?

These would all make excellent email courses. Introduce the
problem in the first lesson. Then use the next six lessons to
give solutions, ideas, and resources (people will give you credit
for knowing your stuff even when you send them to another
expert.)

In most cases authors will be happy to let you use their
material if you include their contact information.
Many magazines, newsletters, and newspapers offer reprint rights
at very low cost.

Your lessons can be delivered at a rate that fits your customers'
schedules. Most of my customers want a lot of information and
they want it now. My lessons go out every day or every other
day. A teacher friend has his lessons go to other teachers once
each week to fit his audience's very busy reading schedule.

Q: Kevin,

I am an entertainer, and I need to get a publicity packet out for
some performances I have coming up. I need it soon, and I have
very little money. I've never done one of these myself. Can you
give me some advice?

Thanks,

Carrie

A: Carrie,

A publicity packet can be constructed several ways, but I like to
include a press release, a page of questions with answers,
possibly a bio, and a photo. You could combine your "about me"
page copy with a photo for an excellent bio sheet. Then write
down the four questions you get asked the most and the answers to
them. This gives media some questions and answers they can use.

Best,

Kevin Nunley
