Customers Buy More Than Your Products

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Recently a supplier that I have used for a long time was
bought out by another company. Even though the new
organization provides the same service at the same price,
I'm disappointed. I'll miss the friendly help the original
owner provided.

Come to think of it, his personality and assistance was the
main reason I was his customer. When I talked to several
friends who also use the service, they said the same things.

This brings up a great point. Customers buy for a lot of
reasons and most of them have nothing to do with the
quality or price of your product or service.

Customers buy:
* Your personality
* Your service
* The way your store or website looks
* Your philosophy about life, business, or politics
* The way your store smells
* Your efficiency
* Your reputation among people they know
* Your location or memorable web address

Full-Color Postcards

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Postcards are the direct marketer's ace in the hole. They are
cheaper to send than regular letters and people can read
them without having to open an envelope (a HUGE
advantage).

Many printing firms who specialize in postcards offer
full-color cards for $100 per 1,000. Full-color cards
practically jump out of the stack of mail at prospects. You
know how you reach first for the full-color postcard of an
exotic location sent by a vacationing relative? Your cards
can work with the same attention getting power.

Many experienced direct mail marketers say full-color
postcard campaigns get them as much as double the
response over a sales letter and at HALF the price.

Try to have your photo or graphic help tease the message
on the back. Use a headline to deliver your main offer.
Include a time limit to increase response. One smart
marketer takes photos on vacations and puts them on
postcards for a monthly send to customers.

Q: Kevin,

I want to do a homebased business but what I've researched always
has the pharse "get people to visit your website!" I'm 50 yrs.
old and I didn't grow up with a computer in my room. Just a
"transister radio". HELP!

Thanks,

Laura

A: Laura,

Good to hear from you. I came to computers late in life and
know what you mean. They can be very frustrating in the
beginning.

These days getting a web site and promoting it can be super
simple. Start with a free site at Tripod.com or one of the other
free site outfits. Then get your own dot-com domain name for
about dirt cheap from Oriweb.com You can have your domain name
forward everyone to your free site.

Then get one or more of our promotion packages at DrNunley.com.
They're all based on strategies that have built businesses for
me and thousands of our customers over the years.

Best,

Kevin Nunley

Prospecting in Chat Rooms

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Recently I asked Kevin Ammons how he built his massive
downline of 1,000 people. Kevin told me he did it almost
entirely in chat rooms on AOL.

I've heard others say this, too. One man told me getting
new customers this way is "like shooting fish in a barrel."

Kevin says the key is to first develop a friendly relationship
with prospects. You have to use the soft sell approach.
"People in general do not like being 'sold,' especially from
someone online they've never met. Though they can see
you in chat rooms, read your website, view posts on a
bulletin board, you will need to build a reputation with
them."

Chat rooms can also serve as a great training tool
for new distributors. "They can watch the conversations
that take place so they can duplicate it in their own chat
rooms," Kevin says.

It is important to appear in the chat room at the same time
every day or several days per week. Let visitors know what
your chat room schedule is. You can become the resident
expert visitors and regulars turn to.

Packaging Your Product So It Sells

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Packing your product well often means the difference between
customers buying arm loads and people glancing and passing by.
Here are a few simple tips to make sure your packaging sells.

1. Your package should get attention, then educate the buyer.
Yellow is an eye-grabbing color. Bold print should tell what the
product is, how it can be used, and even the kind of customer
it's designed for.

2. Make sure your package protects the product (stores and
shippers are concerned with that), but isn't too difficult for
the customer to open. I often find a package is so tough you
practically ruin the product getting the package open. Getting
your packaging right can improve repeat business.

3. Try to reinforce your company image in your packaging. Use
the same design elements from one product's package to another.
When customers are impressed with one of your products, they will
immediately see the similarities with your other product packages
and buy more.

4. As the old saying goes, you can't tell a book by its cover,
but the cover sells the book. Packaging is particularly important
in bricks and mortar retail locations. Packaging is less
important for mail order.

Package design is a specialty. There are lots of expert
designers who work from their homes while completing design jobs
for firms both large and small. You may want to enlist the help
of a freelance designer to make your next package a resounding
success.

Q: Kevin,

We have our site hosted internally with a well-known provider. We
have stats at this time for visits, where people come from, how
long they stay --- etc. Can you recommend a way to use these
stats?

Thanks,

Diane

A: Diane,

Great to hear from you. Often you can use stats like that
to learn which pages and what info are getting the most
attention. You might make that info easier to get to while
deleting or deemphasizing material people don't seem to care
about. You can also see where important info is getting missed.
In those cases you can make the link bigger, bolder, or put it
closer to the top of the home page.

Best,

Kevin Nunley

Explore The Hunger

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

You've heard the advice sell the sizzle not the steak? Kent
Schrader says to take it a step further.

"Don't sell the steak. Don't even sell the sizzle. Explore
the HUNGER! " Kent says. Find where the customer is
hurting and solve that hurt.

Kent illustrates it like this: "If someone calls me at 3:00 in
the morning to tell me that because I am such a good friend,
they are giving me FOUR new tires, and they are letting me
know the tires are now in my driveway, I'd probably say
'thanks' but then I'd be thinking, 'why the heck did he call
at 3:00 am' before drifting back to sleep."

"On the other hand, if the same friend called me to say he
just drove by and saw someone taking ONE of the tires off
my car, I'd probably thank him profusely, leap out of bed,
and run to the window before calling the police."

Most folks are motivated a lot more by a pressing problem
or fear of loss than by the chance for gain. Make your
marketing explore the customer's frustration and pain.
Have your product or service be the cure.

Four Common Myths About Press Releases

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Just about every new business starts off by sending a press
release to media. That's a great idea. But don't stop there.
It takes more PR on a consistent basis to bring in the BIG media
coverage for your business, new product, service or idea.

First, let's dispel a few common myths about press releases:

Myth -- "Newspapers and other media WILL use my press release
exactly the way I wrote it." Wrong. Because you aren't paying
to have media print your release, they can use it or lose it as
they see fit. Often, reporters will take your information and
rewrite it or work it into another story.

Myth -- "Your press release should be like a sales letter."
Actually, your press release should read more like a news or
feature story in a newspaper. Your release shouldn't read like
an ad or sales letter on a web page. If it does, editors will
pass over your release.

Myth -- "Every word of my release has to be perfect, because
editors will be reading it carefully." Absolutely not. Editors
decide to read a release based on the headline. Then they quickly
skim the top of the release to see if it's information they can
use.

Myth -- "If you don't get sales right away, your press release is
a failure." It can take weeks or even months before media use
your information. Look at a series of press releases as a way to
build media awareness of you and your business. Let editors know
you are a consistently good source of quality information about
your industry. Reporters and writers will be more likely to
contact you when they need your kind of information.

The bottom line: Start sending out press releases now and keep it
up every month. Response will start slowly, then build. Free
media publicity is far more powerful than paid advertising, but
it takes time and work to achieve.

Q: Kevin,

Hi, just a quick question. Are there any differences between a
e-zine and a e-newletter? Are they basically the same thing?

Thanks,

Joyce

A: Joyce,

They're the same thing. Ezine was originally short for
electronic magazine. Of course, those looked the same as email
newsletters. So they all became known as ezines.

Kevin Nunley
