Setting Up The First Sales Meeting

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Some things, especially expensive products and services, are
best sold in person. Lots of business people close sales on
90 percent of these person-to-person meetings.

Once you find a prospect who is interested, try to find out if
they can be a serious customer. Many people are too
difficult to work with, don't have the money to afford your
product or service, or have a problem you aren't equipped
to handle.

Quickly discover if the prospect falls into one of these
categories, then politely end the conversation before
scheduling a meeting.

Rather than a "sales meeting," call your first eye-to-eye an
analysis, consultation, needs assessment, briefing, or
diagnosis.

Position your first meeting as an opportunity for the
prospect to get valuable information that will immediately
help to improve their situation.

Don't be afraid to charge for the first meeting. Fifteen years
ago most prospects expected the first meeting to be free,
but more than half now expect to pay for the help they get.

Make Yourself Famous on Discussion Groups

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Nothing gets sales like being an expert. When people know
you can help their situation with experience and knowledge,
they don't mind paying for whatever you suggest.

One of the Net's best tools to turn yourself into a
recognized expert in your field are discussion groups.
These can be UseNet newsgroups (go to Google and click
"groups" to find them) or they can be
discussion groups on web sites. There are also email
discussion groups, sometimes called listservs or
majordomos.

Pick no more than two or three groups to participate in.
Join, then hide and watch for a while. Get to know what
kinds of topics are discussed and who the main characters
are. Many groups have at least one "troll under the bridge"
who seems to thrive on running down anyone who takes a
different view point.

When someone asks a question, be the one to give them a
good, solid answer. Make it a goal to answer a question
once or twice each week. Keep your answer strictly
non-commercial but DO include your commercial signature
file at the end sending people to your site and email.

Several top successful business folks have told me their only
method of advertising was participation in discussion
groups. It generated many a customers over a period of
months.

Make Your Web Site Deeper

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Nielsen, the famous media ratings company, recently told
us there has been a big change in the way people browse
the Net.

In recent months people are surfing far fewer sites, but
spending a lot more time on the sites they visit. You may
have noticed this change in your own Internet use. I've
seen it in mine.

Instead of finding big lists of web sites and hopping from
one to another, I have a small list of favorites I visit often
and explore extensively.

This may mean you need to design your web site in a
different way. Add more content, more levels, and with
additional detail. If someone wants to spend 20 minutes on
your site, is there enough to keep them busy?

Frankly, this change in how customers use the web can be a
very good thing. It is hard to make a sale when people are
intent on getting to the next site. More time spent on your
site means more of a commitment to buy.

It also means fewer sales abandoned at the shopping cart.
Prospects don't want to walk away empty-handed after
spending a big chunk of their valuable time studying your
site.

Marketing a Small Town Business

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

A lot of people who read these articles live in small towns.
Smaller communities are great places to live, but they often
offer fewer opportunities to earn an income. People in rural
communities have long known their best chance to succeed
can be in owning and operating their own business.

How do you market a small town business (or a
neighborhood business in a city--which works much the
same way)?

Start with the oldest and most effective form of marketing
known. Talk to people. Smile, look them in the eye, and
tell them about your business and how what you sell can
help them. You don't have to do a hard sell, but give people
you know or meet the lowdown on what you've been up to.
In small towns, that kind of local, personal information is as
important as the morning headlines.

Talk to the editor of the nearest newspaper about doing a
feature story on you and your business. Make a point of
noting the interesting or helpful information you can provide
for the article.

Check the price of radio and cable TV ads. It's not unusual
to buy these commercials for a few dollars each in small
communities.

The Hidden Benefits of Sweepstakes

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Sweepstakes or contests are a staple of business promotion.
Even if only a fraction of your customers are interested in
winning, many more will enjoy the increased excitement a
contest brings your website or store.

If customers are comparison shopping and your
competitors' prices are about the same as yours, many
customers will buy at the last place they visit. It is simply
more convenient.

However, if they registered for a contest at your site or
store, they will return to see if they won. Sweepstakes can
make your business the last stop, the place where
comparing customers finally make their purchase.

Get customers excited about your prize by describing how
their life will change when they win it. Don't just tell them
they can win a boat, include how a relaxing weekend with
sun and waves can bring tranquility, family harmony, and
better state of mind at work.

Try to find prizes that closely fit the theme of your
business. Even small inexpensive prizes are appealing if
offered to a niche audience who deeply appreciate them.

Your Print Newsletter

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

In this age when thousands of people publish their own
email newsletter for pennies, we tend to forget the power of
an old-fashioned print newsletter.

One consultant sends his newsletter printed on a large
postcard. He calls it the world's smallest newsletter. It
gets attention and he saves on postage.

A music store mails a one-sheet with music news, local
events, and deals on equipment. It keeps past customers
coming back.

Although print promotion is much more expensive, it has
advantages. There is no such thing as spamming with print
newsletters. You can pick a key group of prospects and
send your newsletter every few months until you get their
business.

Direct newsletter readers to your website or autoresponder
for more information and an opportunity to buy.

7 Ways To Market On The Cheap

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Not all advertising costs big bucks. An ad in this ezine is
probably THE cheapest way to reach a large quality audience.

Here are some other ways to save big on very effective ads:

* Desktop publishing makes catalogs and brochures easy to
produce. Create your own booklet to include with orders.

* Get a toll free number. Even though long distance calls
aren't nearly as expensive as they used to be, many customers
will call you faster if you list an 800 number. Using the phone
to sell person-to-person is often the fastest way to get a buy.

* Advertise in specialty and neighborhood newspapers. I get
incredible response advertising in an entertainment paper placed
in restaurants. A classified ad is just $10 per week.

* Buy TV ads on cable TV. Cable rates are cheaper and you can
limit your commercials to specific parts of your city.

* Get a big cell phone package and give your cell number out to
everyone. When customers can reach you just about any time, you
get the sale.

* Give away or sell your own video. Nine in ten people own a
VCR or DVD player. One friend has sold hundreds of his video
telling how he earns a living selling antiques on eBay.

Selling Door-to-Door

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Going door to door through a neighborhood, giving your sales
pitch to anyone who listens, is called canvassing. Canvassing
scares the heck out of me, but many people are good at it and
prefer it over other kinds of marketing.

If you often think to yourself "I could sell a LOT of these if I
could just meet people face-to-face," canvassing could be your
ace.

Good canvassers dress like their prospects. If you will be
approaching bankers, wear formal business dress. Dark colors
like gray, black, or dark blue give you a look of authority.
Dress less formally when knocking on the doors of home owners.

When the door opens, start your pitch by pointing out something
about the prospect. "I like the decoration on your door..Hello,
I'm Kevin Nunley. My company is Nunley Associates..." is a good
way to start.

Be sure to make eye contact. Next you will want to quickly find
out if the prospect has a need for your product, service, or
idea. You don't want to waste your time or theirs if they have
no need for what you sell.

Point out the benefits buying can give the prospect. And ABC--
always be closing. As soon as the customer says "yes," get out
your pad and write the order.

Don't take rejection personally. A certain percentage will slam
the door in your face, kindly tell you to go away, or appear in
various stages of undress. The more prospects you talk to, the
more sales you will get.
