Direct Mail Copy That Sells!

There are a few ways to write direct mail copy that will create
more response. Through trying these techniques, your copy
will be more interesting, better read, and more effective in
getting sales.

Boasting takes a great deal of skill, but can dramatically help
increase response. If you feel confident as a writer, try this
method. Brag a little. Some of the most successful
entrepreneurs use this method. A few post their bank statement
online. Make sure that after you boast about your abilities you
quickly turn the focus to how you can help the reader.

Address the prospect's common complaint. Anticipate their
objection to your product. Answer the complaint
right at the beginning of your letter. The reader will be
hooked!

Make sure that you avoid contradictions. Review your copy for
consistancy. If a customer reads statements that are
contradictory, they will question your credibility.

How to Get Past the Receptionist

Recently I heard from a woman who wanted to know how to get the
word out about her company without spending a ton of money. I
advised her to try using a direct mail letter, a classic way of
reaching a targeted group of people. She replied that she had
tried that, but was having difficulty getting past the
receptionists to the actual persons in charge. "The secretary
sends our letters straight to the trash and the manager never
sees them," she said.

Next I told her to try a combined letter and phone call. Send
the letter, then call the next week. Or call and say you're
sending a letter. The important thing is to keep trying.

She replied they had tried that, too. The phone calls never got
passed the receptionist.

Hmmm. These guys are tough, I said. In these situations go to
the next step. Put ads in the trade publications those managers
read. Once they know your name and benefits, it could be easier
to get past the front desk. Also, consider appearing on radio
talk shows as an expert guest. Or you could create an event and
invite the managers you are trying to reach.

Following these three steps often help you get past gatekeepers
and to the person who can approve a purchase.

Market With Your Own Music Track

When oldies radio stations want to take their listeners back
to the 1950s and 1960s, they often play commercial jingles
from those eras. Those of us who remember those days can
walk through a grocery store and...from the deep recesses
of our memories...sing 40 year-old jingles to a great many
products on the shelves.

Your own music track--played over and over in your radio
commercials, on your phone hold, on your website, and
over speakers in your store--can be a powerful marketing
tool.

In the past businesses have paid from $5,000 to $200,000 to
have professional musicians compose, perform, and record
their music track. These days every city and town of every
size has excellent musicians just waiting for someone to ask
them to work. Many have outstanding digital home
recording studios that surpass the multi-million dollar big
label studios of the past.

Bottom line: You can use local musicians to compose and
record your music track for as little as a few hundred
dollars.

Ask local music stores and music teachers about capable
musicians. Check with recording studios listed in the phone
book and in entertainment newspapers. Find one or two
pieces of music that sound similar to what you want. This
will help musicians zero in on the sound you are after.

You may want to stipulate in writing that your music was
created as a "work for hire" so that you keep the copyright.

Full-Color Postcards

Postcards are the direct marketer's ace in the hole. They are
cheaper to send than regular letters and people can read
them without having to open an envelope (a HUGE
advantage).

Many printing firms who specialize in postcards offer
full-color cards for $100 per 1,000. Full-color cards
practically jump out of the stack of mail at prospects. You
know how you reach first for the full-color postcard of an
exotic location sent by a vacationing relative? Your cards
can work with the same attention getting power.

Many experienced direct mail marketers say full-color
postcard campaigns get them as much as double the
response over a sales letter and at HALF the price.

Try to have your photo or graphic help tease the message
on the back. Use a headline to deliver your main offer.
