Why Your Web Site Isn't Selling

If you want your website is to be successful, you must first
learn the most common problems that can hold you back from a
high-selling site:

--Coding problems: your text is wrapping in odd ways, or your
graphics are stretched, distorted, or missing altogether.

--Copy problems: awkward or confusing sentences, boring or over-
technical copy, spelling and grammatical errors, poor
punctuation.

--Design problems: image overload (an annoyance to visitors,
often resulting in slow loading) blinking fonts, too much text
crammed onto one page, odd mix of background and font colors.

--Navigational problems: users can't figure out how to get to
the relevant information, or even worse, can't find the order
button.

Another quick tip: If yours is a business web site, design it
accordingly. Think about the kind of design that would be
appropriate for your audience and your product. After all, you
wouldn't print your resume on shocking pink paper using some
goofy font, and you wouldn't show up to a job interview in acid
green trousers and clown shoes.

Let Old Customers Bring New Business

We all know it's not easy luring in new customers. So what can
we do? Simply get your existing customers to buy from you again.

So how do you keep old customers coming back? Try offering the
service or product they have bought before, but this time with an
added incentive. You could not only design the web site, but also
promote it free for the first month.

You could also offer them an additional product or service that
compliments the one they already purchased. Try offering a
companion book, or a newsletter subscription on the same topic.

Each time you add a new product to your line, blast out
another email or direct mail campaign to your customer base
announcing your addition. Offer special pricing incentives to
show you appreciate past customers, calling it a "special thank
you for your business."

Show Customers They Really Can Get Something For Nothing

The old saying goes you can't get a free lunch. Surprise
customers with a truly free item or service.

It is a terrific way to get new prospects and leads that can
initiate long term sales and business relationships. Back in
1996 when I was starting my business on the Internet, I offered a
free report on how to promote your business. While I haven't
offered that report in years, I still get requests for it almost
every day. People LOVE free stuff.

Your free product or service should be something that relates to
the things you sell. If you sell advice, give away a report. If
you sell a service, give away a free check-up or consultation.
Or give away a small item that compliments the kinds of products
you sell.

Give it away with no strings attached. Make it clear that
accepting your gift will never lead to any obligation. It's not
a discount or an introductory offer, but a completely free gift.

Market With A Fish Tank

People love fish tanks. The fluid movements of colorful fish has
a naturally relaxing quality for many of us.

My feeling is this is particularly true for many areas of North
America where growth is exploding. More cars, buildings, and
concrete can make nature harder to experience.

While the feel-good quality of a fish tank will help many
customers enjoy their time in your office or store, you can go
one step further. Put your weekly offer on a sign placed near
the fish tank. Create a small display nearby that introduces
your latest product improvement.

This works particularly well if customers come in with their
kids. Children simply can't stay away from a fish tank. While
the child watches the fish, adults notice your marketing
materials nearby.

Keeping up with a fish tank, especially a salt water tank that
supports the more spectacular breeds, can be a chore. I often
find there is at least one person on my staff who would love to
help. There are also services in most cities that will install
and maintain your tank.
