Marketing Your Reputation

When we talk about marketing and advertising we usually
discuss ezines, TV ads, newspapers, search engines and the
like. But none of these are nearly as important or powerful
a marketing tool as your reputation.

If you run a great business or do fine work and everyone
knows and appreciates it, you're on the right track. On the
other hand, you don't have to settle with just any old
reputation you end up with. Smart businesses set out to
purposely build a specific planned-in-advance reputation.

Decide what rep you want people to know you buy. Are
you a top expert with ready answers, honest in an industry
that is often less than honest, speedy among competitors
that aren't?

Pick a reputation that makes a difference to customers. If
everyone has low prices, stress your high quality. If all your
competitors are bad at answering email, make quick
response your known reputation.

Advertise your reputation in all your marketing. Make it a
headline on your web site. Put your reputation statement on
your business card. Then follow through to back up your
reputation and prove you deserve it.

Make It Comfortable To Buy

Whether your biz is online or off, making customers
comfortable with buying from you is key to sales.

We can take a tip from the Mail Order industry. Mail Order

Doing Your Interview On The Air

The number of radio and TV talk programs has exploded in recent
years. Just about every station has a talk show and many air
nothing but talk.

Be ready to do your interview. You will want to be informed and
energetic. Most interviews are short. Watch interviews on CNN
these days. They rarely last more than 60 seconds.

Breath deeply. Do a few deep knee bends. You want to be warmed
up and ready to go when you hit the microphone.

Have a sheet of questions and answers you can give the host or
producer. The host will work from your sheet. This gives you a
great shot at being asked the right questions--questions you
already know the answer to. Ever wonder how experts instantly
know an answer to a question during interviews? The expert gave
the host the questions to ask.

Use plenty of expression in your voice. Talking the way you do
in everyday life will come off as a monotone on air.

Speak crisply. Get to the point quickly.

Don't Be Sheepish About Your Fee

One of the easiest ways to increase your income is to charge a
higher fee. But stating, or even believing, that your product or
service is worth more can be a big step.

Don't think in terms of how much the product or service costs you
to produce. Think instead of how much good it does the client.

Does a customer avoid expensive dilemmas or repairs when they buy
from you. Do people remove painful problems? Do they save money
or make more money after they buy from you?

All these things can weigh in to give you plenty of reasons to
raise your price.

Make sure a customer understands the good deal she is getting.
She may not have considered all the different ways your product
or service can help her.

Next, don't be sheepish about your price. State it proudly. If
you appear even slightly doubtful you are worth as much as
you say, the customer will pick up on it and try to get you to
bring your price down.

Make your offer, state your price, then remain silent. Don't say
a word. Don't make a face. The ball is in the customer's court.
Let the customer make the next statement.

Psychology Of a Sales Letter

makes the sale? Last week writer Stefene Russell
completed a set of brilliant sales letters. I asked her to
reveal some of her secrets for getting copy that pulls.

"The first trick, of course, is to write something that
catches someone's attention," Stefene says. "That's a fine
balance, because if you go too far left of center in the
pursuit of standing out from the crowd, you scare people off
(and look unprofessional to boot)."

Stefene says her biggest help in nailing the perfect selling
lines came with the book "Phrases That Sell" which is filled
with those great lines good sales letters always have.
"Those phrases, I think, work on an almost subliminal
psychological level. One or two of those phrases, and
you've got a good base to start from--from there, it's a
matter of using your own words so that the stock sales
phrases don't sound cliched."

Stefene points out the most effective thing to do is appeal to
human nature, both good and bad. "We poor humans are
vain, greedy, scared, and always looking for a quick fix--we
also like to feel good about helping our neighbor, being a
good parent, or improving ourselves," she says.

"It's what they call `secondary reinforcers' in
psychology--money, attention, and that warm glowy feeling
you get from doing the right thing are powerful human
motivators. Cater to those and you have a good chance of
selling, too."

Follow-up With a Sale After The Sale

One firm purchased the names and addresses of people who
had already bought several thousand dollars worth of
services. The firm found these folks were more than ready
to purchase even more services. The list was far more
valuable than a list of interested prospects who hadn't
bought yet.

This drives home the old saying that 80 percent of your
sales will come from 20 percent of your customers. People
who have just bought are the customers who are most likely
to buy again.

Some sites have a second order page come up after a
customer has filled out the first order page. These sites
often get a second sale from someone who has just bought.

Other businesses are gathering email lists of customers who
have purchased various items. People who bought item A
get a message about a good deal on a related item. Folks
who bought service B get a message promoting an
additional related service.

Get Direct Mail Addresses

Usually people get addresses for their direct mail campaigns
from list brokers. Because we North Americans are famous
for moving from one home to another, it is very hard to get
a list that is current. You've got to pay even more to get a
highly targeted list that zeros in on your best prospects.

Several people wrote to say they have found excellent
alternative places to get good direct mail lists.

One man finds associations who are willing to share their
member lists with him. He also contacts the Chamber of
Commerce in cities for lists of businesses he can sell to.

Carmin Williams says another good way to get up-to-date
addresses for direct mail marketing is through your county's
Property Appraiser's Office. "I have lived in my city my
entire life and know the areas where my prospects live. I
used a city map, circled these areas and entered the street
names in the Property Appraisers search engine," Carmen
says.

She has turned up the names and addresses of hundreds of
targeted prospects. She lives in Tampa and has even
gathered the names of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the
coaching staff.
