Turn Visitors Into Buyers

One of the downsides of the Net is how hard it is to get
visitors to buy what you're selling. Typically 1% or fewer
visitors buy. The percentage of visitors that buy is called
your "conversion rate."

Imagine if WalMart or Sears got only got one buyer for every
1,000 people who came through the store. Because you
don't have to drive across town to get from one web site to
the next, consumers are far less likely feel committed to
placing an order.

Increase your orders by showing visitors what a great
VALUE your product or service is. List lots of benefits the
customer will get when they buy. Tell them how your product
or service will make their lives better.

Put a link to your order page near the top of your sales copy
and another at the bottom. Make sure people always know
where to click at the moment they get the urge to buy.

Thought for the day:

It was announced today that our American Consumer
Confidence index has slipped to its lowest point ever,
or since the index was started 41 years ago.

When the Consumer Confidence index is down, people don't
feel good about their future. They also stop buying.

One thing I've noticed over the years is that Internet
businesses do very well when the index is up, but experience
a major slow-down when the index dips.

Right now is a very good time to negotiate good deals
for advertising. Focus on letting your customers know how
you can make their lives easier and brighter. Let them know
you will be there for them now and in the future.

Use Black and White to Get Attention

One of the biggest challenges you have with marketing is
breaking through the advertising clutter. We are all
bombarded by thousands of advertising messages every day.

It's very easy for prospects to tune out your marketing
message. It pays to be on the look-out for ways to break
through the clutter.

One method used in ads and signs is to put the entire ad in
black and white--black words on white paper with a black
and white photo. When all the other ads are in color, black
and white can make your ad stand out.

This strategy can also work for web sites.

Back before color was common in photos and film,
producers developed high standards and deep insight into
methods for using black and white effectively.

Confer with a design pro or check design books at your
local library for ideas on how to use a black and white look
effectively.

What to Put in Your Autoresponders

Free autoresponders are everywhere. And we've all heard
about how they are a powerful tool for giving you follow-up
selling with no effort. After all, most customers won't buy
the first time. They only buy when you remind them to buy.

Try writing an information "article" to put in your
autoresponder. I put article in quotations because it doesn't
have to be anything like a regular article. One man does
well with a series of top 10 lists. Top ten ways to get on
search engines; top ten ways to get visitors to your order
form. It could just as easily be Top Ten Ways to Improve
The Look of Your Yard.

They key is to zero in on a specific, precise audience of
people who are deeply interested in a particular issue.

Your autoresponder article can simply offer news about a
new project or service. Explain why you developed it, how
it works, quote folks who are using it, what benefit it brings,
and how the autoresponder reader can get a special deal.

Courses are also good. People love to get a seven lesson
course on a popular topic. It can be delivered to them each
day, or every other day, or even once a week. This can
keep you on their mind for days, weeks, even months--until
the sale comes in.

How Business Buyers Are Different From Consumers

Most of the advertising and marketing we see is directed
toward consumers. Yet, much of the money spent around
the world is for products and services purchased by
businesses. For a very long time, business-to-business
transactions made up the lion's share of Internet purchases.

Consumers don't necessarily NEED your product or
service. If money is tight or the customer isn't convinced
they need it, the consumer can just as easily wait until next
month or next year to make the purchase.

Businesses often NEED what you are selling right now.
Their immediate profits may depend on having it.

Businesses buyers are more knowledgeable. You will often
be selling to a manager or specialist who knows your
industry inside and out.

Consumers are in a hurry and aren't always interested in
reading long marketing copy. Business buyers generally
appreciate all the information you can give them. Long
copy is no problem.

Promote Your USP

Your USP is your Unique Selling Position. It's the one
thing you have that your competitors don't. When you
promote your USP you get more customers.

Your USP could be a product or service that people want
but the others don't sell. It could be something a bit more
intangible like friendly service.

One search engine promotion firm I worked with NEVER
answered email. Another always replies within hours.
There is never any question which will get my business.

Put your Unique Selling Position on our business card, in
your newspaper ads, and front and center on your web site.

If everybody in your business keeps their prices a big secret,
publish yours right out in the open where anyone can
examine them (you might be surprised how many of us
won't buy if we aren't given the price without having to
ask).

If all the others have the same products, point out how your
products are original, one of a kind, first to market.

Two Top Reasons Marketing Fails

Ads sometimes don't work. There are a lot of reasons why
this happens, but more often than not, we can point to two
downfalls that seem to hurt marketing.

Problem one is your ad isn't clear to the people it is talking
to. Most of us have words and phrases we use in our
industry that make little sense to our customers. Strive to
put your ideas in plain everyday language. If you have an
industry buzz word, translate it into words everyone uses.

Just as often, the one important benefit that will make
people buy gets lost somewhere in the copy. Often when I
get a long email message from someone, they'll have the
important part in the next to last paragraph. Someone in a
hurry wouldn't find it.

Problem two is marketing frequently isn't pointed at the
right people. One guy who wanted to recruit members for
his MLM opportunity advertised in the daily newspaper.
Lots of people read the paper, but very few were interested
in network marketing. He would do far better to put his ad
in a networking publication or ezine that specializes in his
target audience.

Marketing With Small Signs

Small signs are a terrifically powerful to promote your small
business at almost no cost.

Start your sign with a headline that can easily be read from a
distance of 20 feet. Keep the copy short and simple.

Tailor your message to the neighborhood your sign is in.
One woman is doing very well putting her signs about
earning extra income part-time in neighborhoods of young
families and minimum wage workers.

Another is doing well with a sign advertising house cleaning
and baby sitting services in a neighborhood filled with
professional women who have lots of money and very little
time.

Every time I write about small signs several people write to
tell me signs just junk up the landscape. The mayor in my
town recently took the same approach giving small sign
owners tickets and telling them to "buy advertising like
everybody else."

But not all communities feel this way. Many places aren't
bothered by signs and a few even welcome them as evidence
of a thriving small business culture.

Be careful putting signs on other people's property. Make
sure you are aware of any local ordinances regarding signs
including the area's history for enforcing their regulations.

The Press Release LETTER

A while back I was on the radio DJ discussion group when
one guy suggested people send a letter rather than a press
release.

This makes a lot of sense as I used to use this method with
great success. Here's how it works:

Rather than sending a press release, media editors find it
refreshing when you simply send a letter that gives them an
idea for an article, program, or report.

Have your letter introduce yourself and tell why you are
qualified to provide the information. Then get directly to
the juicy part. Tell the editor the information that will
REALLY interest their readers.

Editors jump for story ideas that relate to things in the news
or help readers with a common problem.

Follow that with some interesting or helpful details the
editor can use to fill the article out. Finally, provide your
contact information so the editor can reach you for answers
to her questions.
