Tips For Telephone Selling

The Internet revolution has only increased the need for telephone
marketing. Many of the largest e-commerce sites ask for your
phone number, then have a room of expert telephone sales reps call
you for the big pitch.

Why? Telephone selling works. Here are some simple tips that will
boost your effectiveness on the phone.

**Try to go directly to the person who can authorize a purchase for
your product or service.

**When you get the decision maker on the line, jump into a concise
statement of the main benefit you can bring her. "We have a new
process that can save you 20% on production costs."

**Prospects appreciate courtesy. Begin by asking if it is a good
time to talk. If not, ask the prospect when you can call back. Have
several dates and times ready for suggestion.

**Jot down a few notes before making your call, then use your
talking points to keep your pitch on track. Take a few notes
immediately after the call so you can remember exactly what was
said when it comes time to call again.

**Don't wait too long to ask for the sale.

**Offer to send more information via mail, email, or direct them to
your website.

Use YOU

You often hear that the word "FREE" is the most powerful word in
marketing. That is not entirely true. Yes, FREE gets attention, but
there is an even more powerful word that professional copywriters
use non-stop.

Use "YOU." Hokey as it may seem, using "YOU" a lot pulls the
reader into your copy. For example: You can earn big bucks when
you use this strategy.

The goal of most good ad or sales copy is to make the reader,
listener, or viewer feel like you are talking directly to them. People
love to hear about themselves. "YOU" lets people know the
information you are giving them is for their benefit.

Can you use "YOU" too much? One top writer told me not to
worry about it. "People don't seem to notice lots of YOU's in the
copy. It all blends together naturally for them."

Sure enough, look at any well-written bit of sales copy and you will
see "YOU" used over and over again, sometimes several times in a
single sentence.

Neighborhood Newspaper Ads

It used to be that a small business' best low-cost advertising bet
was radio. Radio is still quite affordable in many communities, but
ad rates have gone through the roof in many others.

This leaves lots of small businesses with nowhere to go for local
advertising. Fortunately, America's oldest form of mass media is
coming to the rescue. Many cities are seeing a big return of
neighborhood newspapers.

Small neighborhood papers focus on a particular part of town.
They carry news on events within a few mile radius of their readers.
Neighborhood papers also work hard to appeal to businesses in
their immediate area.

One consumer told me she pays closer attention to ads in her
neighborhood paper. "I know they're all a very short drive away.
The big daily paper is advertising stores that are an hour or more
away," she said.

Neighborhood papers not only feature far lower rates than larger
papers, they let you tightly focus on a particular part of town.
Specific neighborhoods feature specific income levels and lifestyles.
This helps you target your ads more than you can with other kinds
of local advertising.

Team Up With Internet Advertisers

Internet advertising tends to be cheap, but it can take quite a bundle
to keep your messages consistently in front of a lot of prospects.
Buying audience for your website is almost always an expensive
proposition.

One way to stretch your reach on the Internet is to team up with
other businesses that are reaching a lot of prospects with

valuable product or service their customers will appreciate.
Including you on their site must be a benefit for them.

Many intense Internet advertisers are looking for ways to defray

The World's Most Persuasive Words

Are you writing a sales letter, an ad, web site copy, or a script
for telephone sales? Make sure you use the right words.
Scientists have studied which words are the most persuasive.

They are:
you
money
save
results
health
easy
safety
love
secrets
guarantee
proven
discovery

Notice how often you see professionally written ads that string
several of those words together: "You'll love how you save money
using our proven secrets to guarantee results."

Other words that work like magic are free, yes!, and fast. Good
sales copy uses these words all the time. It's no wonder some
people have their sp^m filters set to weed them out. Still,
these words are so powerful I wouldn't let my ads be caught
without them.

Throw Caution to the Wind

Ever buy something only to find out you can't use it, can't
return it, and are stuck paying for it? That's a fear that often
underlies our purchases. You can bet the doubt of "not being able
to use it" follows your customers around as well.

When a prospect thinks about buying from you, then backs away
without making a purchase, the doubt factor is often the reason.

Your sales efforts and marketing materials can put doubts to
rest.

* Offer a money-back satisfaction guarantee. This is much easier
to do with products than when selling services. If customers can
return the product in resellable condition, offer them a healthy
money-back guarantee: two weeks, one month, one year. You'll get
few returns, but almost every customer will be put at ease by
your "no risk" policy.

* Give prospects a free sample or trial period. Let them try
your product or service to make sure they can use it. Often just
knowing the trial is available will make customers more
comfortable placing an order.

* Provide a demonstration. I often give people a few tips on how
to improve their web site or sales copy. This gives them a quick
demonstration of what I can do for them. Many soon return to
place an order.

* Offer to fix the product or service if problems arise. This is
especially important if you sell something that is widely thought
to have a lot of problems. In the end you may end up making more
money from providing the repair service than from selling the
original item.

How To Call Radio Talk Shows

Just about every city has several radio talk shows. Many feature
programs covering all kinds of community and business issues.

Get on these shows from time to time and thousands of people will
know about you. You might even be able to slip in your business
name so the audience knows where to find you (but don't be
blatant about it.)

Write down the call-in numbers of several shows. Keep them next
to the phone so you can call in a flash when you hear an
opportunity.

Listen to the show to figure out what the main topic is. You
won't want get on the air with your comment about local business
if the host is talking about the Middle East.

Call at the beginning of the show. It is easier to get on the
air then. As the show goes on, more listeners will become
interested and the number of people calling will increase.

Get right to the point. Tell the producer what you want to say
on the air. When the host answers, tell her you enjoy the show
and make your point quickly. If the show has a guest, ask a
question after you make your brief comment.

Don't give up. You may not get on half the time, but persistence
will eventually make you a well-known caller.

Explore The Hunger

You've heard the advice sell the sizzle not the steak? Kent
Schrader says to take it a step further.

"Don't sell the steak. Don't even sell the sizzle. Explore
the HUNGER! " Kent says. Find where the customer is
hurting and solve that hurt.

Kent illustrates it like this: "If someone calls me at 3:00 in
the morning to tell me that because I am such a good friend,
they are giving me FOUR new tires, and they are letting me
know the tires are now in my driveway, I'd probably say
'thanks' but then I'd be thinking, 'why the heck did he call
at 3:00 am' before drifting back to sleep."

"On the other hand, if the same friend called me to say he
just drove by and saw someone taking ONE of the tires off
my car, I'd probably thank him profusely, leap out of bed,
and run to the window before calling the police."

Most folks are motivated a lot more by a pressing problem
or fear of loss than by the chance for gain. Make your
marketing explore the customer's frustration and pain.
