4 Ways to Start a Sales Letter

Over the years, writers have found that there are certain types
of openings in direct mail that are more effective than others.
These work just as well for email letters and for web sites.
Here are some of these ideas to keep in mind when you are trying
to structure your opening.
1) State the offer. This is so simple many people never think of
it. Put the offer right at the top of your page in a headline or
bold type. The offer includes the product that is for
sale, its price, the terms of the sale, and the guarantee.
2) Announce it! If you have something new, start your letter
with this important information. Nothing gets attention and
builds excitement like the word NEW. I always put it in all
capitals to give it added excitement.
3) Flatter the reader. There is nothing a customer likes more
than to feel as though they are set apart from "the crowd".
Describe the type of person who would probably be one of your
best customers. Tell why the way they feel, work, think, or play
is important and deserves attention. Use the word "YOU" as often
as you can.
4) Use a provocative quote. Quote a famous person or a customer.
The quote should arouse curiosity. It should make the reader want
to find out more about your product.

Can't Think of What to Write? Pick a Word

Sometimes the most difficult part of writing is just getting
started. What might help? Pick a word or idea and begin "talking
on paper."
All you need to do is let go and let your thoughts take you
where they want to go. It does not really matter where you start;
all that matters is that you did start!
Put your pen on paper and start writing anything that comes to
mind. Don't let your critical voice take over. You're not
allowed to change anything, just write the first thing you think
of.
Think of a blind date. It will probably be awkward, but you will
find SOMETHING to talk about. Writing is exactly the same.
I find that once you get started, the words start to help you.
The page will create its own rules helping you to know what to
write next.
Remember that good writing begins with a single word.

Your Life as a Story in the Press

Recently I read through Ray Kroc's book "Grinding It Out"
about how he created McDonalds. Then I picked up Dave
Thomas' "Dave's Way" on how he started Wendy's.
Both books make you admire these giants of fast food and
both were written by capable ghost writers.
There's a good lesson here that is well known to CEO's and
wealthy entrepreneurs. You can have a professional writer
create the story of your life and get it printed as a magazine
article, newspaper story, or even as a book. In fact, there's
no reason why you shouldn't be able to get your local TV
news programs interested, too.
Work with a good writer to pick out the interesting,
exciting, or inspirational details about your life or the life of
your business. The difference in a ho-hum everyday life and
an exciting celebrity life has a lot to do with picking the
more interesting details to tell about.
Try to find things that would make a specific audience
identify with you. You might tell you story to inspire
people who want to escape their 9 to 5 job or people who
want to solve a common problem in their industry.
Look for stories you can tell that will make readers feel
emotion.

Easy PR With Radio

Some of the easiest PR to get is from radio. Radio stations
usually make up more than half of the contacts list in any
media guide. There are thousands of stations in the US and
Canada looking for interesting, topical, and entertaining guests.
While radio has a huge reach, they get a fraction of the
advertising pie--daily newspapers get 80% in most markets.
Stations have few staff, yet must come up with local
programming around the clock.
News/talk stations and shows are particularly pressed to get
guests. Any local talk show host will tell you it's murder
trying to do a show entirely from listener call-ins.
There are two approaches to getting on the air:
* Go the formal route. Call the station, talk with the host or
producer, tell why you would be dynamite for their
audience. Then show up with your bio and Q&A in hand.
* Or be more informal. Simply call in when you feel you
have something worthwhile to add. It's not unheard of to
show up at the studio bearing free food.
I was a radio morning DJ for many years and would praise
the gods when someone interesting would call or show up
to lighten the load.

5 Strategies for Selling Yourself

This is a constant debate. Should you sell your product or
yourself? Of course you should always sell the product. But,
your long term goal should be to sell yourself as well. Here's
how to start.
Be completely comfortable with who you are. Try to change
yourself too much and people will sense dishonesty.
You should have a marketing strategy, but also be willing to give
free advice and referrals. If you are building a long-term
enterprise, this will be invaluable as you open up relationships
with your customers.
Gain a reputation of being sincerely interested in your customers
BEFORE you start selling. Talk to them informally and make them
remember you were there.
If you have a web site, update it often and make sure there is
plenty of information. Invite people to refer to your web site
for details on your products and services.
Above all, make yourself interesting to others. If you sell
yourself as well as the product you will always have an eager
market.

Be Quiet and Listen!

It is ironic that in the field of sales most of us learn to speak
in order to gain commitment. Often, that is the worst thing a
sales professional can do. It is better to listen much more than
you talk.
Before you can listen, you need to learn how to ask a question.
Your questions should be open ended to start a conversation.
In other words, avoid questions that can be answered yes or no.
Think about what you will ask beforehand. Ask about competitors,
past purchases, and other important issues. You may want to make
a list of your questions and keep a copy with you.
Make sure you pause as you ask each question so you are
clearly understood. If you are confused by a reply, you might
want to paraphrase what was said so you are able to understand
the issue in your own words.
Selling demands much time and effort. However, by learning the
basic skills of listening and asking questions, you can become
very successful.
