Improve Your Ad in 30 Seconds

Feel like your ad just isn't quite right? Here are a few quick
fixes to heighten the effectiveness of your ad:
1. Set them in your targets - The most important way to improve
an ad is to tightly target your audience. You will often have
more luck placing your ad in a trade publication than in a
general newspaper, even if the readership is not as high.
2. Make you ad stand apart from the rest - Most people are
constantly bombarded by advertisements, but what makes yours
stand out from the rest? The ads we pay attention to are the ones
that pertain directly to our most pressing concerns. The ads we
notice are the ones that promote a product, service, or idea that
can solve our problem, make us feel better, make us richer, or
make us feel sexy and loved.
Get attention by targeting your best audience. Then use a
headline to shout out a problem or solution your target audience
will immediately identify with.
3. Make your ad skim-friendly - Only a small percentage of us
start at the beginning of an ad and read every word to the end.
If the ad is more than a couple of sentences, we will skip it.
Put your most important phrases in bold. Keep sentences short.
Use simple everyday words. Make your paragraphs no longer than
three lines. Try to limit yourself to one idea per sentence.

Get Your Point Across with Comparisons

How do you get complex selling points across quickly? Instead of
trying to explain a new concept from scratch, make a comparison.
Use your audience's prior knowledge about something else to make
a statement about your product or service. In essence, you are
just taking what your customers know already, and then "tweaking"
it a little bit to help make your point.
There are at least two ways that you can use comparisons in your
persuasive messages:
1) Comparison and Contrast: Simply use people's knowledge of some
product and service and then show how yours is different and
better. This allows you to focus your valuable "message time" on
the benefits and advantages of your offer.
For instance, if you were trying to market a new software
program, you could say, "Our program works just like a word
processor, but allows you to edit, modify, and upload web pages
as well. It's the power of an HTML editor with the ease of a word
processor!" By phrasing it this way, you can do a lot of
explanation in just a few words. You are also doing the one thing
that we all desire -- you are distinguishing yourself from your
competitors.
2) Analogy: In an analogy, you help people understand your idea
by showing how it is similar to something else. This, of course,
will only work if you use something that the audience is already
familiar with -- if you don't, you're only doubling their
confusion!
An analogy that we've all heard is the one about fishing: "By
providing information to you about marketing (or promotion, or
copywriting, or whatever), we are showing you HOW to fish rather
than just GIVING you a fish" -- the reason we understand this is
because we understand the concept (and advantage) of being
able to provide for ourselves over a long period of time, rather
than just having a one-time benefit.

Put POWER In Your Headlines

Just about any kind of marketing needs headlines:
Web sites, sales letters, classified ads, and business cards all
work much better if they have a clear, exciting headline.
I like to start a headline with an action word (or verb if you
think back to high school English). EARN 20% more,
TAKE time to relax, FEEL better fast--all start with an
action word that stresses a change for the reader.
Focus your headline on how your product or service will
make your customer FEEL. While most of us like to think
we make a purchase based on logic, studies show emotion
plays a big role.
Customers feel good when your headline promises to
remove something that is bothering them or add something
that will make them feel wealthier, sexier, more relaxed, or
loved.
Finally, resist the temptation to be cute with headlines.
Above all else, your headline must be clear. Plain words
often communicate your meaning best to hurried customers.

Recently I found an interesting piece of real estate on the
Web. I emailed the realtor to find out more about it. When
he learned I was interested, he used a digital camera to take
photos of the property. He then put them up on a web page
with my name on it.

A Few Tips For Good Telephone Selling

Do you have to convince customers, bosses, or employees
via the telephone? Ready or not, you're in telephone sales.
Even with all the enthusiasm about the Internet, most
business still revolves around the phone.
Here are some quick tips for making your point more
powerful.
Talk clearly. Use short sentences. Talk loud enough but
don't over-modulate the mouthpiece (that's announcer talk
for distortion). This can be especially tricky when you're on
the cell phone in the car.
I learned a trick from a former newspaper reporter. "When
you're talking with a reporter and you want them to write
down particular points but not others, vary your pace. Talk
fast through the points you don't feel are important, but
slow down and enunciate the important parts you want in
print." The same works for selling on the telephone.
Leave the script behind. Instead, jot down a few phrases
that remind you of your important points. Ad-lib around
these to keep your pitch on track.

We often talk about the value of putting customer
testimonials all over your website. Few think of doing the
same thing to their bricks and mortar location.
One very successful firm covered an entire wall of their
reception area with letters from happy customers. While a
customer waits to meet with a sales person, she can peruse
the comments of dozens of delighted customers who share
her concerns and challenges.
If your company would never consider such a brash move,
carry customer testimonials in a nice leather notebook. Call
it your Customer Hall of Fame and never fail to show it off
to prospects and customers.
Whenever a buyer has kind words, hand them a paper and
pen and ask them to jot down their comment (or write it

racking Quality of Ezine Audiences

Not all ezine audiences are created equally. One of my articles
ran in a an ezine with 100,000 subscribers. It pulled six responses.
Another ezine with just 2,000 subscribers ran the same article and
I got a ton of response.
Why the difference? Some ezines have very active readers
who carefully digest every word of every issue, then act on
what they have learned. Other ezines simply wind up in the
delete folder of 75% of their subscribers with hardly any
taking time to read an ad or article.
By the way, this same phenomena is true of different radio
stations, TV programs, newspapers, and magazines. Some
media have attentive, active users. These are almost always
the media that will give you best results.
Before placing advertising, consider what kind of person
uses that media. Is it a background experience they pay
little attention to, or is that media a notable thing in each
audience member's day?
Incidentally, what kind of people subscribe to a marketing
ezine that arrives six days a week? I have found the
audience that reads this `zine to be especially energetic,
active, and vitally interested in marketing ideas.
