Organize Your Radio Tour

There are more than 4,000 radio talk shows in the US.
There are over 3,000 in Canada and other countries that
speak English.

Every one of these talk radio stations and programs
needs a steady flow of guests who can give good information
to their audience. Since radio never closes, needing
guests 365 days a year, 24 hours a day; talk radio offers the
BIGGEST FREE promotion opportunity imaginable.

There is another reason why talk radio is an incredibly
effective promotion tool--most people are too afraid to try it
and many who have did it badly and won't try it again.

Most who do a talk show try it once. They get on a

expert in by doing a little research). Your ten points should
also be something audiences will be interested in. It helps if
they relate to a topic that is in the news from time to time.

Combine your Q&A sheet with a press release. Call radio hosts
and producers first and briefly give them your idea. Then
email or fax your Q&A sheet and release to them.

How Many Customers Don't Understand You?

One of the main reasons marketing fails is customers don't
understand what they were being told. When an ad utterly
fails to pull any response, it is often because the audience
was confused about the offer.

Unless you know for a fact everyone in your audience is an
experienced hand, keep your product explanations baby
simple.

Figure that the customer only knows a lot about one thing:
the problem that is bugging them. Tell them, in simple
terms (good ad writing is often on a sixth grade reading
level) what you are offering, how it improves the customer's
situation, and how it accomplishes that improvement.

Watch out for industry-specific jargon. Everyone who
DOESN'T work in your industry has no idea what they
mean and many people who ARE in your industry only have
a fuzzy idea.

Last year I met with my child's teachers at Parent Night.
While discussing my child's progress, they started to trade
strange terms like "the ADL is at a Four Level in
accordance with 14-oh-4." I was smiling, nodding, and
frustrated in my ignorance.

Write Your Own Press Release in Five Steps

Media editors everywhere are under intense pressure to
come up with good information fast. When you give an
editor interesting, useful information, you have a good chance
of getting free media coverage in return.

Try writing your own press release to send to your local and
regional media. Here are five easy steps to get you started.

1. Put your contact information at the top, or it can go at
the bottom. Editors often need to contact you for more
information and most need a clear idea of who you are.

2. Next write a headline that gives the editor a good idea of
what your release is about. I often follow that with a
second smaller headline that previews a few main points of
my information.

3. Below that, write a lead paragraph of two to three
sentences. It should read like the opening paragraph of a
newspaper story. Provide the who, what, where, why,
when, and how of your information. Even if the editor
reads no further, she should now know who you are and
what you did (or are going to do).

4. Next comes the body of the releases where you lay out
your information in short, simple sentences.

5. Toward the end of your release you can make it a bit
more like an ad. Tell how to purchase your product or
service.

Put POWER In Your Ads

Here are some simple tips for putting POWER in your ads,
sales letters, web site copy, and even office memos meant to
persuade.

Move the most impressive thing you can say to the
beginning of your ad or copy. You may have to write out
your ad first, then underline the most powerful part and
move it to the top. Most of us tend to put the important
stuff toward the middle, usually without realizing it.

Make your copy talk to the reader. The word "you" is one
of the most powerful words in advertising. No matter how
many times you use you--even twice in one
sentence--readers won't get tired of it.

Point out specific benefits. "The 50% increase in Turbolene
gives you twice as much power with a 20% savings" sells a
lot more product than the less specific "you get more power
and big savings."

Always use a headline. Most people read the headline
before they decide to read the rest of the ad. It should get
attention AND give people an idea of why they want to read
the rest of the ad.

Years ago I worked at a radio station that was getting
clobbered by a smaller, smarter competitor. Each week
they would launch an exciting event that would take public
attention away from my station and place it firmly on theirs.

One day a new manager taught me a lesson I’ll never forget.
It doesn’t matter if our competitors come up with a great
idea first, he said. If we immediately copy their idea and
make it even bigger, the public will think of us as the
originators.

This is absolutely true and I have seen it work many times.
Because there is a lag in customer perception, you can grab
the idea, make it bigger, and get the credit. Most people
will think YOU originated the idea and your competitor
copied you.

On the other hand, once you know this rule, you can defend
against a competitor that tries it on you. When the
competitor copies your idea, make yours bigger.

Feedback, Not Failure - Make Your Ad Work

Probably the biggest mistake businesses make with their
advertising is to try an ad only once. Juan's accounting
firm placed an ad in the local financial paper. It didn't pull
much response, so Juan figured that kind of advertising just
doesn't work for his type of business. He won't place ads
in the financial paper again.

More often than not, the problem wasn't with the
marketing method but with the ad. Don't give up on a
marketing method because it doesn't work the first time.
Look at the experience as feedback rather than failure. Try
to learn why the first ad didn't work, then fix it and try
again.

Direct mail marketers have solid evidence this rule holds
true most of the time. The first test pulls better than
average response about 25 percent of the time. Fifty
percent of the time the first test pulls even with past
experience. And 25 percent of tests fall far short of the
average.

Even if your first try doesn't bring the results you expected,
try again. Change your ad. Make the message clearer.
Make the offer more attractive. Test several different
headlines. If your budget is limited, test with low cost
classified ads and free Internet ad sites.

Include a Small Gift With Your Letter

You can increase customer response to your sales letter by
including a small gift. Even something as small as a pen or
cheap calculator can up response 15 to 35 percent.

Again, the gift doesn't have to be expensive. In most cases
you can go with small items commonly found in a business
supply store. Ask about buying them in bulk.

In my business, a pen, business card holder, free report, or
freeware on a disk would make customers happy.

The gift should be small and light enough to send easily
and cheaply. Consider sending in a larger than normal
envelope. This helps your letter stand out in the recipient's
stack of mail. Hand write "your gift enclosed" on the
envelope.

This method can work even with email. Recently I got an
email from a vendor, but didn't have time to read it right
away. Several days letter, an exact hard copy of the email
arrived via priority mail. That got my attention and I read
it.

How to Speak the Customer’s Language

Have you ever been to a foreign country where everyone seems to
be speaking any language but yours? Well, that's how many people
feel when they surf the Internet. Business and technical websites
are often so full of jargon that they may as well be speaking a
foreign language to their customers.

In order to avoid filling your website with meaningless blather
and, let's face it, complete BS, follow these essential
guidelines:

1. Run the "BS Detector," available from www.streettech.com/bs,
to check for obscure marketing, business and technical speak. It
will help you simplify your copy so customers can read it instead
of decipher it.

2. Invite visitors to act. Every page should contain at least one
clear call to action, indicating the next step your visitor is
supposed to take. You'd be surprised at how many people click
away from a site, not because they aren't interested, but because
they don't know what to do. If your visitor doesn't know that
he/she is supposed to buy, then that is a problem.

3. Get to the point. Visitors don't come to your site for a
little light reading. They scan web pages for the information
they want, but they do not read every word carefully. To cut
words and make copy more persuasive, use action rather than
passive verbs. Example:

Passive: Jimmy was eating the cookie.
Active: Jimmy ate the cookie.

4. Show the visitor you are out to benefit THEM by using "you"
and "your" at least five times more than "we" and "our." Using
those words too many times sounds egocentric.

5. Search engines are your friend, so incorporate a lot of good
key words, especially near the top of the page and in the first
sentence. Don’t waste this space with filler copy.

Is Your Website Too Generic?

If you visit a lot of sites on the net, you'll begin to notice
that most of them are exactly the same. Sure, they are selling
different products and services, but on the surface they are
about as different as the Olsen twins.

But there are plenty of things you can do to personalize your
website while still maintaining user-friendly familiarity for
your visitors. With the help of a designer, you can use these
methods to spice up your site:

*Have a web designer set up sound effects on your buttons so
every time a visitor clicks on something, there is a fun noise.
But choose your effects wisely. Some sound effects sound like
error messages. Pick something light and fun so your visitors
know they are headed in the right direction.

*You can also have a designer create a flash presentation about
your product or service, or design motion elements into the site
so graphics move when the curser passes over them. Additions like
this give visitors a thrill, like they are experiencing something
new and interesting, instead of just the tired old stuff they
usually see.

*Your site can have its own soundtrack. Pick a few of your
favorite songs and have a designer create an application that
allows your visitors to choose which song they want to listen to
while they peruse your site. Few people are doing this, not
because it's too hard to do, but because they don’t know it’s an
option. It will certainly make you unique on the web.
