Offer a Personal Explanation

The biggest reason people don't buy is they don't
understand enough about what you're selling. One way to
get passed this hurdle, ESPECIALLY for expensive
products or services, is to provide a one-on-one info session
with the prospect.

Invite prospects to come in for a one hour, no pressure, no
purchase expected information session. Sit down with
them, listen to all their concerns, answer each one taking as
much time as needed.

Not every prospect will be willing to commit the time. Not
all will trust you aren't going to put them over a barrel (like
those free weekend condo guys who won't leave you alone
about purchasing a timeshare.)

On the other hand, getting to the bottom of all your
prospect's concerns and questions right from the start can
vastly reduce the time it takes to get a sale and ultimately
increase the number or sales you make.

Just as important, people who are willing to spend
one-on-one time with us, who know a subject and are ready
to share their knowledge, are the people we trust and
admire most.

How to Respond to a Question

You're on the phone with a customer. She asks a question.
How do you respond? Being a good listener as well as
being good at answering questions is a key part of selling.

Many of us take too long to answer the question. Or in the
process of answering, we feel like we're losing ground with
the customer. We start to make excuses, cave in with a
lower price, or over extend by offering to add more at no
charge.

When a customer or prospect asks a question:

* Listen closely. Try not to think of your response until
you've heard the entire question.

* Pause a second to organize your thoughts. You aren't a
politician. Pausing before you speak isn't considered a sign
of indecision. The customer will feel you're taking the
trouble to come up with a response customized to their
particular situation.

* Repeat the customer's question.

* Give an answer that provides one point. Some marketers
like to include a hint that leads to a second point that can be
brought up a moment later.

* Stop there. Don't say another word. Let the customer
reply. This is especially true if you ask for the sale or give
your price. The next person who speaks loses the
negotiation.

Produce Your Own TV Commercial

Most TV commercials are pricey. A simple TV ad package in
prime time or in the late night news can run into the tens
of thousands of dollars. Get less expensive ads at off-
prime times and on popular cable channels.

One major expense of doing a TV ad campaign is getting your
commercial produced. It's not unusual for network TV spots
to cost $250,000 just for the production.

Your local TV spots don't have to be nearly so expensive.
If you follow some simple guidelines, your production will
flow quickly keeping per-hour costs down.

Keep costs down by having a professional announcer talk
about your business over moving and still shots of your
store, product, or service. This kind of production
doesn't require microphones, often one of the most time
consuming aspects of TV production. Get a local radio
personality to do the voiceover. Most charge $60 to $100
for this service.

Shooting outdoors is always much faster and less involved
than doing indoor shots where everything from lighting to
the set has to be carefully staged.

Using actors generally requires a bigger, more expensive
production. You can include a short segment with a spokesperson
and get much the same effect at lower cost.

Recipe For a LONG Sales Letter

Long sales letters, 12 pages for regular mail and up to 25
pages for web sites, are very popular right now.

And for good reason. Sales letters do best when they wind
up in the hands of REALLY interested prospects. The person
who is on the verge of buying from you wants all the
information they can get. A long letter packed with
details is often just the thing they need to motivate a
purchase.

Here's a simple recipe for writing your long letter:
1. Start by describing a BIG problem the reader has (if you
sell tires, a blowout that leaves the family stranded,
etc.)

2. Make the problem sound worse. Show what life could be
like if the reader doesn't solve the problem. Show her all
the possible pitfalls she could face.

3. Next describe how wonderful life will be if the reader
follows your advice to buy your product or service.
Connect your features with the benefits they will bring.

4. Now step back and let a few of your satisfied customers
talk. Include three to six glowing testimonials. Be sure
to include the customer's name, city, and business if
appropriate. This makes them seem more real.

5. Return to your product or service and describe more ways
it can benefit the customer. Take time to paint a scenario
for each of the features and benefits.

6. Now pile on the bonuses.

7. Finally, go for the sale. Ask the reader to buy now!
Include a time limit for a special low price.
