Cooling Down Angry Customers

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Anybody who has been in business (or worked at the business) for
more than a day has come face-to-face with an angry customer.
Some will smile and politely tell you you're wrong, while others
can blow dry you a new hair style with a flaming email.

Since angry customers tend to say bad things about you to other
customers, it's a good idea to help them cool down, then do what
you can to solve the problem.

First, be sincere. The customer is dead serious, and she wants
you to be serious, too. Next, get ready to say, "I'm sorry." An
attorney once told me that if people would just say, "I'm sorry,"
half of all lawsuits could be avoided. Finally, offer to help
solve the problem.

This might mean making corrections or doing the service over
again. It could mean providing a replacement for a product that
doesn't work properly. It might even require you to give just a
bit more than you promised (not a bad thing, since giving more
than you promised usually leads to good word-of-mouth).

What you may not be able to do is give the person their money
back. Often, a refund is possible if you can get the product
returned in resellable condition, or if the product is very
inexpensive. Services that require a lot of work and expense may
have to be non-refundable. In those cases, say why you can't give
a refund, but make it very clear that you are going to fix the
problem. Often that's all an angry customer wants to hear.

How to Unlock Your Creativity, Then Put It To Work In Your Ads

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Be creative and you will get much more powerful ads. You don't
need to be brilliantly creative-- just a little creativity will
go a long way.

Creativity can be a difficult process. You can use a few steps to
help you tap into your unconscious mind and create ideas you
never thought you were capable of.

First, think about your product or service. What about it is
extraordinary? You might think that it isn't very exciting, since
it is part of your everyday life. But many customers could be
interested in your product if they only knew about it.

Once you have thought about the special benefits of your service,
pick the benefit that gives you the greatest competitive edge.
Your finished marketing strategies can focus on several factors,
but make sure that you have one important point that stands out.

Next, be careful in the selection of words for your ads. Use
plain, short words that are easy to believe. Remember that people
are ready to think "I don't believe that!" while reading your
advertisement.

Pay attention to what captures a prospect's interest. Try using a
headline, a photo, or a combination of both. A unique offer or
special benefit will most likely interest them as well.

The most important thing to do is tell the customer what to do
next! For most people, if they have the chance not to buy, they
won't. So don't give them that chance! Lead them to the next
step-- purchasing.

Market With Free Seminars and Demonstrations

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Offering free seminars or demonstrations can be a very profitable
way to promote your service or product.

Advertising will help you get a large group of prospects to your
seminar. Try advertising in the newspaper, on the radio, or on
cable TV that you are holding a free seminar on a topic closely
related to your service or product. Go for the free publicity if
it's available. Make sure you tell the truth in your ads about
what will be included in your seminar. It is important to attract
honest prospects who are actually interested in what you are
selling.

Think of your seminar as a lecture. People appreciate useful
information, even more when it is free! Demonstrate your
expertise or your product's efficiency for most of the time,
perhaps 45 minutes, and then spend the rest selling. You usually
don't need more than just a few minutes of sales pitch. People
have already invested a lot of their time getting to the seminar
and listening to your presentation. Most won't want to leave
without buying something.

As you give your seminar, you are proving your expertise. You are
considered an authority on the subject and gain credibility. Even
if people do not purchase your product at that moment, they might
buy from you later on.

Advertising Specialties and Samples

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Advertising specialties are free items that have the name,
address, and phone number of the advertiser on them. These could
include ball-point pens, calendars, scratch pads, mugs, you name
it. They can also be free samples of what you sell.

Advertising specialties are great for "reminder advertising."
They put your name in front of your prospective customers without
the customer ever leaving their home or office. The customer ends
up thinking about you while going about a daily activity like
checking the date, drinking coffee, or jotting a note to a co-
worker.

Use specialties as part of a larger marketing and advertising
plan. Advertising specialties are not usually as effective when
used alone. Get people to your site or business with ads, then
give them specialties as they leave. Not only does this make a
customer feel good about you, but it gives them an additional way
to remember you. Everyone likes a free gift!

Be sure that specialties and samples you give away are something
you would wish to have your name on. If it looks too cheap or
inappropriate, it may do more harm than good. Don't give away
anything that will break easily or quickly.

Using a Publicist

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

If you have a major advertising campaign underway, you should
also have a big publicity program going as well. Your ads not
only get the attention of potential customers, they also attract
the attention of editors, producers, and writers in the media.
Your chances of getting free media publicity during a major ad
campaign are quite good.

Don't leave it to chance. Take a two-tiered approach. Send out
well-written press releases to all the media in your town,
region, or even nationwide. You never know who will pick up a
story. Sending your material to everyone (especially cheap with
email) is a very good idea.

Then go one step further. Get a publicist to work with you.
Publicists take a much more concentrated, hands-on approach to
getting you covered by media. They often call TV producers and
pitch your story, or write pieces about you and query them to
specific magazines or newspapers.

Look in your local Yellow Pages to find qualified publicists.
Many work with firms specializing in public relations and are
members of the PRSA (Public Relations Society of America). Many
advertising agencies do publicity as well. Some agencies
specialize in getting media coverage for specific industries.

Publicists aren't cheap. Good ones start at $2,000 per month. But
that's money you need to spend if you're also investing in a big
ad drive.

The Benefits of Self-Mailers

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Self-mailers are a single sheet of paper folded in half or in
thirds. You put your ad copy on one side and the customer's
address on the other side.

Self-mailers have often received a bad reputation from writers,
ad agencies, and marketing consultants. The usual response from
these professionals is that "self-mailers generate low response",
"people don't read them," or "they are thrown away." Many
clients, however, feel differently.

Self-mailers are much cheaper to produce and mail than standard
direct mail packages. With self-mailers you only need to print
one page. With standard packages, however, there are usually at
least 5 pages that must be coordinated, folded, and computer
personalized--all costing you money. Although the direct mail
package might give you more total sales, the self-mailer will
give you a lower cost per sale.

Self-mailers are very productive when sent to people who already
know you, because they are often more likely to read whatever you
send them. Even though a self-mailer will obviously look like
promotional material, your customers will probably read it.

If you have an extremely large mailing list, self-mailers could
be the way to go. You may not be able to afford to send a full
direct mail package to everyone on your list. A self-mailer might
be the only economical way of reaching everyone.

How to Write Your Own Book

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

Many people are experts at something. For example, a doctor could
be considered an expert in healing or a receptionist could be an
expert in phone etiquette. If you know a lot about a subject, you
should write a book!

A common problem that people have when writing a book is where to
start. This dilemma can actually be quite simple. If you have
written any articles, reports, columns, or newsletters, you may
have written a book already. You could easily compile them
together and have it printed.

If you don't have any of these items, try making an outline of
the points you wish to cover in your book. Put them in an order
that makes sense, as though you were giving an actual
presentation. Then come up with a subject that you would like to
discuss in each chapter and briefly outline each topic.

How do you get your book published? You could have it printed by
a publishing house. The publisher would take care of everything
including editing, printing, distribution, and taking care of
money. Print-on-demand publishers let you keep a larger share,
but may charge you to print the book. A less expensive way to go
would be to publish your book on the Internet in ebook form, or
have it bound at a local printing shop. People who buy your book
via mail order often don't mind if it's photocopied with a
simple cover.

The Difference Between a Sales Letter and an Ad

by Kevin Nunley
http://DrNunley.com

People often get the terms ad and sales letter confused. It's
understandable. Both are designed to get new leads or sell a
product, service, or idea. But there are important differences in
how they work.

A sales letter is a more personal form of advertising than an ad.
An ad in a magazine or newspaper will be seen by thousands or
perhaps millions of readers. A sales letter is for the reader's
eyes only. Even though a sales letter is often mass-produced, the
reader still views mail as more personal than an ad in a
newspaper or magazine.

Unlike an ad, a sales letter can use the first person. This
conveys a more informal, natural tone. This way the reader gains
a better sense of the writer's personality, enthusiasm, and
sincerity.

Too many sales letters sound like advertising. The words should
flow in your own voice, as though you were writing to a friend.
The reader should feel like they know you though reading your
sales letter.
