Selling - How to Begin

The fist step in selling your service is to get a few prospects
to express interest in learning more about you. Their interest
might be immediate: the prospect needs, wants, and is ready to
buy your service. Or it might be casual: the prospect just wants
to see a brochure or ask some questions.

One way to create initial interest is through direct marketing
techniques such as print advertising or direct mail. This will
help you announce your services and get prospects to call or
write you for more information.

Techniques such as public speaking, writing articles for local
newspapers and business magazines, or giving seminars are other
ways to generate interest. Using this method, you will get people
to come to you because they perceive you as an expert in your
field.

An effective brochure or package of sales materials can also help
with sales. These answer the prospects questions and can convert
them from only mildly interested to very interested, which is
exactly what you want!

Newspaper ads are an excellent way to drive sales, but a bad ad
can be a costly mistake. Here are some easy ways to ensure your
newspaper ad pulls results.

First, it is important to mention your offer in the headline,
then restate your offer in a subheading. This is the first
part of the ad that a customer notices. Be sure that your ad
includes a word or phrase that is set in large type, such as
FREE, BUY NOW, or GUARANTEED. This helps attract the customer's
attention.

Do something to differentiate yourself from others who advertise
in the newspaper.

The way your ad looks is extremely important. Experiment with
different ad sizes and shapes. Put a unique border around your
ad, even if it is small. Also, you could try adding a color to
your ad. Red, blue, and orange often work well. Remember to
create a visual look that you can maintain every time you
advertise. This creates an identity, and increases familiarity.

Always put the name of your company somewhere at the bottom of
your ad. Don't expect that people will get the name from the
copy, the headline, or the picture of the product.

If you're going to use newspapers to support your other
advertising efforts, be sure you use them weekly, or stay away
from them all together.

Why Your Ad Didn't Work

Ever run an ad in an ezine or pay for a banner on a web site and
get no response? Often the first impulse is to blame the ezine or
web site for the lack of response. But it's usually the ad itself
that is causing the problem.

Most ads on the Internet--and in print and on TV for that
matter--fail to get attention. The ad simply isn't bold, loud,
bright, or active enough to pull our eyes, ears and minds into
the ad's message.

The key is to make your message as big, bold, and attention-
getting as you can without becoming too annoying. If you want to
get your company name across to people in an animated banner, put
your logo BIG and in the middle of each frame. Anything more
subtle will cause most of the audience to ignore your banner.

Also remember the old rule of 7. Seventy percent of people won't
respond to your ad the first time they see it. You need to
advertise over and over again with the same ad. This gives the
bulk of your audience time to see you, think about you, then buy
from you.

Get New Business from Old Clients

Don't focus all your efforts on getting new clients. A profitable
source of income can be getting new assignments from clients you
already have.

One way to get your clients to give more business to you is to
make your services available to other people in their company.
You will have an advantage because the client is already
satisfied with your work.

At the beginning, it is important to concentrate on what the
client hired you to do. Do your best on the project and amaze
them with your ability. Then, you can bring up the subject of
helping them in other areas and talk about your experience. The
client may hire you in another area of your expertise.

You don't want to pressure clients about giving you other types
of assignments. A good way to let clients know what you can do
without bothering them is to send samples or photos of jobs
completed for other clients. Attach a short note to the cover
that says hi or gives a description of the project.

Successful Service Selling

In order to successfully sell your product or service, your goal
should be to win clients, not assignments. Your income will grow
larger if you have regular clients who keep coming back.

Go out of your way to please your clients and do a good job for
them. No matter how busy or successful you are, it is important
to come across as someone who is helpful, not someone who is
"snobby."

There have been more than a few cases where we had to bend over
backward for a somewhat difficult client. Later the customer went
on to recommend us to many others, obviously impressed that we
made the effort.

Build personal relationships with as many people as you can. Even
people that you might consider unimportant could someday have a
major say over whether you are hired. Try to participate in
client activities. Make sure that you say hello to your clients
at conferences and other events in your industry.

Remember, clients have the power. Never be rude or lose your
temper. Always try to be patient, corteous, and friendly. Clients
can choose not to continiue working with you at any time, for any
reason, or sometimes for no reason at all.

Market With Public Speaking

Giving talks and lectures is a great way to build your reputation
and get your name around. Most lectures are given at lunch or
dinner meetings, trade associations, professional societies, or
for civic, community, and business groups. The best place to
speak is anywhere that potential clients may be attending.

The topic you choose to speak on should be directly related to
your business. It should not be a sales pitch for your services,
however. Your lecture should provide the audience with
interesting and useful information on the topic. By giving the
audience good advice, you are considered an expert in your field.

Don't feel that your lecture must be entertaining or funny. It is
more important that your presentation be clear and
informative. Just be yourself and speak in a relaxed, natural
manner.

Most presentations are around fifteen to thirty minutes long, and
then with extra time for questions and answers. Practice your
speech at home to make sure that it fits in the time that you
have. Audiences hate it when speakers run over the time limit.

Public speaking allows you to make contact with people on a more
personal level. You make a greater impression than you can
through mail, email, or even on the phone. People get to hear,
meet, and shake hands with you.

Size Matters...For Ads

Sure, we would all like to run full page ads every time we place
an ad in a publication.

However, if you have to go with something smaller, make it work
to its maximum potential.

Most full sized newspapers are twenty-two inches high. If you run
an ad that is twelve inches high, or higher, then you can be sure
your ad will be above the fold.

The size of your ad will always matter. The bigger the ad, the
better to be seen with, my dear.

However, unique borders, graphics and eye-catching design can
serve to grab a reader's attention.

Whether big or small, just make sure that something about the ad
entices readers to look closer.

assume a schizophrenic personality.

In a face to face conversation, you may be energetic and

Try role-playing on the phone with a friend. You play the
customer and your friend plays you. Then switch places and try
again.

Role-playing gives you insight into how to sound when offering
your message.
