How to Be Remembered

If a prospect says "who are you?" when they see you, you're in
trouble. If you aren't a memorable salesperson, then your company
isn't going to stand out in the prospect's mind either. Here are
some strategies on how to be remembered.

Remember special events. You could send a birthday card to a
person who has never bought something from you. Who knows? You
might be the only person who remembered their birthday and
they'll sign a contract with you the next day.

Make sure that your thank you notes are handwritten. This is
especially important today in this computerized world. You can
also fax or send a cartoon or article that applies to your
prospect.

Learn you prospect's interests. For example, if they mention that
they enjoy playing board games, then on your next visit bring
them a small game. Make sure that the gift is inexpensive and
appropriate.

Build an emotional rapport. Talk about things you have in common.
People enjoy buying from a salesperson who they feel is
interested in them, not just their order.

You sell by being different! Perhaps it won't work 100% of the
time, but it is possible that sales could double or triple by
being a little more creative. You can't lose a sale that you
don't have.

Use testimonials to support your claims. This gives valid support
to what you're saying and helps get rid of a customer's doubts.

Make sure that you smile. Why should you smile while on the
telephone? A smile adds a pleasant tone to your voice that
customer's can actually hear and feel. It gives you a sense of
warmth and genuineness.

The person on the other end of the line wants to succeed just
like you do. If your product or service will aid them in that
success, then you are doing them a favor. If you can convince

Positive is Profitable

Successful salespeople need a positive attitude! Customers are
more apt to by from someone they like. And not many of us can
truthfully say we love to be around negative people. Here are
some ways to help you have a more positive attitude.

Begin you day positively! Try waking yourself up with a clock
radio rather than a loud, annoying buzzer. Make sure you give
yourself extra time and definitely don't get up at the last
minute. It's difficult to be cheerful when you're running late.
One of the hardest places to be positive is driving to work.
Don't let other drivers control your behavior. Keep calm and try
listening to motivational or educational audiotapes.

Be positive in your greetings. When someone asks you how you are,
don't reply with the usual answers "fine" or "OK." Instead, try
using words such as "Fantastic," "Excellent," or "Great!" You'll
be surprised what effect it will begin to have on yourself and
those around you.

Always expect the best. Just because business might be slow for a
time does not mean that it will be that way tomorrow, or next
month. Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. We often get what we
expect from life. So why not expect the best?

Forgive yourself. Even the most competent of people make
mistakes. The way you speak to yourself affects your mood,
behavior, and performance. Send yourself positive messages and
remember to learn from your mistakes so you can avoid doing them
in the future.

If you apply these ideas to your life, you will be able to
maintain a positive attitude and you'll sell more, faster!

Using E-mail Etiquette to Get More Business

Today, the average business person sends and receives around 90
messages a day. There are some important things to remember about
using email. Your prospects choose to use email because they are
busy and don't want any interruptions. They probably don't have
time for chatting, but want to know about your product or
service. Here are some guidelines for e-mailing.

Reply to your prospect quickly. Your prospect wants to know what
you can offer them as soon as possible. You might not be able to
reply to them instantly, but you do need to respond quickly. Try
to reply within the same day, or at least in 24 hours. When you
respond quickly with their information, it makes them more likely
to do business with you.

Always make a reference to your prospect's original message. This
will help them remember what request you are responding to. Make
it as simple as possible for your prospect to know what your
message is referring to. This will help decrease the possibility
that they might delete your message before reading it.

Keep your emails brief, but detailed. Your prospects want
information, but they don't want to read pages of text. Fill your
email with just enough information to help them make a buying
decision. Don't overwhelm them with too much information. Just
say what needs to be said. You can give them more information in
following emails.

Remember to include more contact information. Even though your
prospect will have your email address, always include your phone
number, fax, address, or cell phone numbers as well. Your
prospects will appreciate that they can reach you in other ways,
if necessary.

them happy by understanding exactly what they want. The first
step is to find out WHY they might want your product or service.
To do that, you need to put yourself in their shoes.

As a customer, you often shop for a new product or service
because you are dissatisfied with something and want to change
it. What will stimulate you to buy? The price? The speed of the
service? Understanding what it is that makes your customer want
to buy gives you a big advantage.

It is also important to know how you can do the best job for your
customers. Make your customers want to come back. Treat them how
you want to be treated.

Remember that you are also a customer yourself. Think about what
affects your own shopping experiences. What do you like about
certain companies? What do you dislike? What makes you feel
satisfied with a purchase when you leave? What makes you want to
do business with a company again? Answer these questions yourself
and you will get a better understanding of how to motivate
customers to do business with you.

Using the Telephone To Market

Telemarketing costs less than many other forms of advertising. A
telephone call takes much less time than face-to-face selling,
and is more personal than a letter. Telephone marketing also
provides you with fairly close personal contact to your prospect.

Telemarketing should be used in addition to other marketing
techniques. It should be a continuing effort. A single phone call
will usually not be enough.

Voice training is often a good idea for whoever is doing the
calling. Make sure that you talk clearly, use short sentences,
and talk loud enough so that the prospect can hear you. Recent
research has shown that it is a good idea to memorize a script so
that your words flow more smoothly. The script must be so well
memorized that you know it by heart Don't use words that feel
strange. Find words and phrases that come naturally to you.

Your telephone personality is important to consider. Notice how
your friends and probably even yourself use a different voice
personality when speaking on the phone. Sometimes it's subtle,
but it's there. Try to eliminate your telephone personality and
be as natural as possible, as though you were speaking to someone
in a regular conversation.

Be prepared to be rejected. Only 51% of people even listen to
telemarketers. To succeed in telemarketing, you need to know what
benefits a customer likes. Emphasize those benefits that have the
most impact. Remember, the more people that you call, the more
sales you'll close.

Making Billboards Work

Billboard advertising works best when combined with other
marketing strategies. For the most part billboards are used as
reminder advertising, but sometimes they can lead directly to
sales. For example, when you put "next exit" or "2 miles ahead"
on your billboard, your sales could increase dramatically.

Most of the time, you can't buy just one billboard. Usually
you've got to rent ten to twenty billboards at once. Some will be
in good locations, while others are definite losers.

To decide whether or not it would be profitable for you to have a
billboard, find out how many cars pass the billboard site each
day. Billboard firms have this data on hand. Billboard
advertising is best if you have a business that will have an
instant appeal to motorists.

When planning your billboard, try not to use more than six words.
Remember that people are driving quickly by and only have time to
glance at your sign. Keep it simple. Use one large graphic for
the focus, and make sure that the type is clear and the words are
large.

Try testing a billboard for a month or two. If nothing happens,
at least you're not out of that much money.

Canvassing: Selling Door-to-Door

Canvassing can be one of the most inexpensive marketing methods.
It can even be free! Canvassing is simply asking for a customer's
business. Sometimes it's called "soliciting" or "door-to-door"
marketing.

The first step of canvassing is the initial meeting. Realize that
first impressions do count. Make sure that you are friendly,
upbeat, and honest. Try to establish a relationship with the
prospective customer. Smile and look directly into the person's
eye, and if possible, use the person's name. Often, it is good to
begin by talking about non-business related subjects. You could
talk about personal matters, weather, or a current event for a
sentence or two before getting to your sales information.

The next step is the presentation. During your presentation you
outline the main features of your product or service, and tell
about the benefits to be gained from buying from you. How long
your presentation should take depends on the price of your
product or service. If you are offering to wash you prospect's
car, the presentation might take less than a minute. However if
you are trying to sell a home satellite system, it take might an
hour or even several visits.

The last and most important step is closing. This is the moment
when you complete the sale. Ask if you can write up the order.
Then stay silent. Don't make a sound. Give the customer a chance
to respond.
