"But We Tried Everything!"

Occasionally I meet a business that has done a TON of marketing
but still isn’t selling much. It isn’t that they haven’t tried.
The list of marketing they attempted can be staggering.

If thousands and millions of prospects are learning about the
product or service, why aren’t any of them buying?

Here are some common reasons even well-promoted products don’t
sell.

There isn’t any real market for the product. It may seem like a
great idea, but nobody wants it--at least, not yet.

Customers don’t think your business is qualified to sell the
product. One man knew his medium-sized business could supply the
needs of major customers, but they didn’t buy until his company
grew into a big corporation. "We could have served them just as
well before, but they wouldn’t buy because they thought we
weren’t big enough."

Your advertising isn’t targeted to the right market. This is
probably the most common problem. A company markets with a media
that reaches a mass audience (like TV or daily newspapers) but
reaches too few of their customers who belong to a specific
group.

Tightly targeted media don’t always reach the audience they claim
to reach. Try running a test first to see if you get results
before spending big bucks.

Get Your Own Bookmark

We’re buying more books than ever in history. The advent of mega
book stores and on-line book shopping are moving printed pages
into our homes and offices at record rates.

Unfortunately, most of us have very little time to read the books
we buy. Publishing industry studies show people read to about
page 17 of a book. They place a bookmark where they stopped, set
the book on a shelf, and never getback to it.

This presents a new and simple opportunity for marketing. Put
your ad message on a bookmark. Amazon.com, Borders, and Barnes
and Noble all use this strategy.

One publisher of Internet books includes their own bookmark
listing several dozen helpful websites. It made me want to keep
the bookmark for future reference.

Bookmarks can contain helpful tips, useful phone numbers,even
cartoons and jokes. Try to make your bookmark something people
will want to keep for a long time. You might even laminate it for
added durability.

What's The Best Part Of Your Story?

I often tell people to put "the best part of your story" at the
beginning of your web copy, ad, or press release. What's the best
part of the story?

It's the part that gets people to sit up and listen. I often call
it the "juicy part." If a stranger came to your office to
visit today, that wouldn't be of much interest. But what if one
of those strangers had a lion on a leash, or the stranger stood
on her head and sang the Australian national anthem, or the
stranger turned out to be Phil Donahue.

If you told this story to a friend, you would immediately start
with the juicy part: "Guess who came to our office today.? Phil
Donahue! He just walked right in, then stood on his head and sang
the Australian national anthem."

You would get your friend's undivided attention for the next few
minutes, no question about it.

Ad copy and press releases should do the same thing. Start with
the part that will get attention.

You would be surprised how many people do it backward. The story
will start at the beginning with the most boring things possible:
We are a small company with 10 employees. We provide golden
thinglets for the service industry. Once each week we invite a
guest to see our work. Usually they are business people you
wouldn't know. Yesterday was different. Oprah walked in with a
lion on a leash.

Market With A Print Newsletter

Many companies publish printed newsletters they give out free to
customers and prospects. Newsletters are used to promote a
company and its products or services. In most cases, this kind of
marketing is used to build a company's name and reputation rather
than make direct sales.

The typical newsletter is around four pages long. The text is
usually set in 2 or 3 columns and there is hardly any white
space. Often included are three or four long stories (about 1,000
words), a few shorter items, and also some photos with captions.
Don't forget the caption--sixty percent of people read them.

One downside is newsletters can be considered less credible than
the same information coming from a newspaper or magazine. Readers
know newsletters are self-published by the company and may give a
one sided view. One benefit, however, is that a company can say
whatever it wants to without worrying about being misquoted or
censored by an editor.

Print newsletters can have a long life. Pack your newsletter with
helpful information and watch how many people keep each issue
bound for later reference. This can be a source of new business
for years.

Making Classified Ads Work

Are you having trouble coming up with that perfect classified ad?
Here are some tips that will help you write a classified ad that
sells.

You definitely want your ad to stand out from all of the others.
But it's important not to leave out the information that really
sells. Make sure you're thorough. Readers want to know all of the
important facts about your product or service. If you don't
include that information, they might pass right by your ad.

Don't use abbreviations unless it's necessary. An abbreviation
you use might be perfectly clear to you, but someone else might
have no idea what it means. How can they decide if they want to
order your product or service if they don't know what it is
you're selling?

Be honest in your ad. Some people exaggerate in their classified
ads because they feel they get more of a response. But, what
happens when a buyer finds out that they have been mislead? They
definitely won't appreciate it and will take their business
elsewhere. They will probably tell others about the horrible
experience they had with you, and that will not be good for your
business. Honesty really is the best policy.

Clearly state your price. The price of an item is probably one of
the most important factors to classified ad readers. Ads that
show the price are the ones that get results! Also, giving a
price helps you to attract customers who are in your price range.

Remember to include your contact information. Be as accessible as
possible. Include a telephone number, email, fax, and the hours
you can be reached so customers can get in touch with you. Often
a customer who can't get through to you the first time won't call
again.

to accountants, to general contracting. In most every case, those
