Let The Spouse Answer

Many of us sell in situations where the customer is really two
customers: a husband and wife or two business partners. When both
spouses or business partners are present, you often have to
convince both that your product or service is the thing to buy.
If one wants to buy, but the other strongly objects, you usually
lose the sale.

Much of selling is about overcoming objections. You tell Sally
that your Chrome Gizmo will save time in her business. She says
the time saved is no big deal. You overcome her objection by
showing how the time mounts into big savings over the course of
several years.

When both spouses are present, let the spouse answer the
objection. Pause a moment after the objection to give the spouse
an opportunity to answer. You will find they often come forward
with an excellent point.

When Sally says the time saved is no big deal, wait a moment for
her husband Ralph to pick up the cue. Ralph knows how Sally
thinks and he understands the best way to persuade her. Ralph's
words also have more credibility with Sally (she knows he isn't
getting a commission for the sale).

Overcoming The Fear of Past Mistakes

On the Internet these days there is a lot of talk about
conversion rates. Your web site's job is to turn visitors into
buying customers.

No matter what kind of business you're in, conversion rates are a
prime concern. Customers come into your store and either discover
reasons to buy, or go away having settled on reasons not to buy.

One of the key reasons people don't buy is from a fear of past
mistakes. They bought a product or service like yours once and it
didn't work.

The early years of the Net have been a time of trial and error.
All of us have tried this and that with a few things working
wonderfully while others are a waste of time and money. It's hard
to find a customer who hasn't lost money on something that didn't
work.

Overcome this fear by helping the customer understand why their
earlier experience was a failure. Many still don't know why the
earlier purchase didn't work. They appreciate your help and
admire your expertise.

Without being too heavy-handed, show how you can solve the
earlier short coming to achieve the results the customer wants.

Emotion Sells

Customers appreciate getting lots of details on the attractive
features your product or service offers. Many will spend days or
weeks looking over your materials or web site before they decide
to buy. In the end, thought, their decision is largely based on
emotion.

That's why savvy marketers stress the benefits a customer will
receive when they buy. They try to get straight to the customer's
personal emotions.

"Earn more money! Spend more time with family. Get the dream car
you've always wanted. Show the boss how you saved 20% on all
future supplies."

Those lines make you feel good about your future and proud of
your accomplishments (or future accomplishments you will achieve
AFTER you've purchased the product.)

The copy tells the customer "you're ok, what you want is ok, and
you should have what you want."

Build emotion into your marketing by stressing the problem your
product or service solves. It's a BAD problem that makes people
miserable. Build up the stress the reader feels. Then show your
customer how to relieve that stress by purchasing your product.

Piggyback For Cheap Ads

One way to get very low-cost advertising is to piggyback your ads
onto someone else's. This is a longtime practice in broadcasting,
but can be used with any media.

Here is an example: You want to advertise your web site on radio,
but don't have the hundreds or thousands it would take to buy
your own spots.

There is a computer store in your town that advertises on radio
all the time. You offer to cover a small share of their ad costs
or trade a service for a mini 10 second ad included at the end of
their radio commercial. Check with customers and suppliers who do
lots of advertising.

I know a furniture chain that always includes a 5 second mention
for the local cable TV company in their commercials. With the
huge percentage of small businesses that want to be online but
don't know how, you might offer to build them a web site they can
promote in their commercials. Of course, the site will include a
banner linking visitors to your site.

TV ads can include a graphic for your business or run a crawl
(words across the screen). Larger newspaper ads might include a
graphic and a few lines of copy for your business.

Two Biggest Marketing Boo-Boos

There are two things that will sink your marketing and
advertising almost every time. More often than not, when someone
says "my ads didn't work," one of these two boo-boos are to
blame.

Marketing that isn't targeted to a specific kind of customer
doesn't work (unless you have LOTS of budget). Big companies can
blanket radio, TV, and magazines with million dollar ad budgets.
They know they will catch their best customers somewhere in the
crowd.

The rest of us have to first find our best customers, figure out
what media they use, and tightly target our advertising to reach
those best customers.

The second major marketing boo-boo is so simple you may not
believe it. Most marketing fails because people didn't understand
it. The message was too clever, too technical, intended for a
different audience, too long, or in an e-zine they couldn't
figure out how to read.

Once when I was working in radio, I jumped on the air and
announced the first caller would get tickets to see the Rolling
Stones. My tongue got tied and I mumbled my way through the
announcement. No one called, not a single person. A few minutes
later I read the announcement again, this time speaking clearly.
The phone rang off the wall.

Get Out of a Slump

We all have times of year when business slows down. Many web-
based businesses watch sales dip during the summer months when
customers are outside and off the Internet.

Here are a couple of ways you can jump-start business to get a
quick increase in sales.

Give your biz a jolt of free publicity. Suggest yourself as a
guest on a local talk radio show (talk about your area of
expertise). Write a short how-to article for an e-zine. Send a
fan letter to an on-line business and tell them it's ok to use it
as a testimonial on their web site. Create a new web page on a
hot topic lots of people are interested in and register your page
with all the major search engines.

Place ads in a few new places. Try ads in a neighborhood
newspaper, in your industry newsletter, or in an e-zine you
haven't tried before. Because this will be the first time readers
will see your ad, you will get a burst of response from all those
people who like to try new things.
