Write a Great Classified Ad

Classified ads are often called the poor person's advertising.
The fact is, they work for almost every business. Check the pages
of your local "shopper" newspaper and you will see most of the
BIG businesses in your town using classified ads, too.
Classifieds are also the Internet's best bargain for your dollar.

Here is a simple formula for writing a killer classified ad:

Start the first two or three words in all capital letters. These
words should grab your prospect's attention. Readers skim down
the column of ads and only read the beginning words that stand
out from the others.

"NEVER MIND people who say you won't get rich."

"YOUR FREE COMPUTER is waiting in our exciting sweepstakes."

Next add a few sentences that talk about your product, service,
or opportunity. Keep sentences short. Don't have to be complete.
Start with action words.

"YOUR FREE COMPUTER is waiting in our exciting sweepstakes. Enter
while you browse our complete line of speed-demon computers. LOW
prices!"

Wrap it up with your phone number, address, email, or web site
URL.

"FULL DETAILS http://www.yoursite.com"

Give up! Make Adjustments!

Probably more than any other Internet writer, I shout the
benefits of Never Giving Up! "Don't give up promoting your
business," I tell you. Success is probably just around the corner
once your ads have had time to sink in with your best prospects
and customers.

But what do you do when you've tried and tried, spent all the

Give up. Make adjustments. Try again.

What Makes You Mad?

You often hear if you can figure out what a customer or prospect
really wants, what they really like, you make the sale. They
want? You fix (for a price, of course).

Many customers won't tell you what they like. Some are afraid if
they let you know their inner desires, you will sell them
something they don't yet want to buy.

Quite a few don't know exactly what they want or like. They'll
say, "I'll know it when I see it, but I can't put what I want
into words."

I got a great solution while talking with Internet expert Paul
Myers. Paul said, "Ask people what makes them mad. You will see
their dislike flash across their face and you will know this is
something they really care about."

This strategy makes a lot of sense. Get customers and prospects
to talk about what they don't like, things that are a hassle, and
stuff that makes them mad. Most people have no problem instantly
thinking of things they want fixed.

You will quickly get to the heart of their problem. Offer a
solution...and make the sale.

Make the Basic Model FREE!

A friend who owns an Internet tech firm recently said, "In our
business, everything is moving toward free." That's true for lots
of fields. As the price of technology drops, basic services
become extremely cheap.

Why not offer the basic model free? This idea has occurred to
many businesses, so many that it may be hard to get people to pay
for some products and services. You can draw huge numbers of
customers, especially on the Internet, if you offer in-demand
services free.

You might do this simply to increase the number of customer
coming through your business. Alta Vista recently started
offering free Internet access. This costs them plenty of money,
but the large numbers of people signing up are of interest to
advertisers who want to buy ads with Alta Vista.

Another key to making money with this marketing model is to offer
important improvements for a fee. Many who sign up for the free
model will opt to spend $10, $30, or $100 more to get the
additional features or services they need.

It's the old free goldfish strategy. Once you have the free fish,
you have to buy the fish bowl and fish food for the life of the
fish.

Too Much Web Site Copy?

Some time back I beefed that too many web sites didn't have
enough words to explain their offers. "Some sites are all
pictures with very little copy. It's hard to figure out what the
site is selling and why you should buy it," I complained.

Now it looks like a lot of sites have gone the other direction.
In an effort to maximize sales, they put dense copy about all
their offers on the opening page of their site. Did we over do
it?

The latest thinking among advertising experts is a page filled
with lots and lots of copy is jarring. People click to the page
and think "Gee! I don't have time to read all this."

It's often better to trim your opening page offers down to just
your most essential elements. Plenty of white space is good.
Rather than having a batch of graphics on the opening page, you
might focus on one larger more powerful graphic that unifies the
page.

Some big corporate sites are moving to this philosophy of "less
is more."

Bottom line is customers are pressed for time. Many are surfing
the Net while on their lunch break or between office chores. If
they can't figure out your offer quickly, they may click
elsewhere.

Marketing With Stick-em Notes

Sometimes low-tech marketing tools can be surprisingly effective.
If a lot of your prospects will be gathering in one place, try
marketing with Stick-em Notes.

You can have small yellow squares printed with your message to
stick here and there. Most small copy shops can handle the order
at low cost.

Because Stick-em glue is mild, the notes come off easily and
leave no mark. They're also just the right size for prospects to
stick in a pocket or slip in a day planner.

Recently I strolled through classrooms at the local community
college. Someone had distributed Stick-em notes with the headline
SUMMER WORK--$12.95 PER HR. Students were snapping them up. It
didn't hurt that the notes contained the advice "Please Do Not
Litter" at the bottom.

Be sure to include a headline of two to five words. Follow that
with some bulleted points that explain your offer, main feature,
and most important couple of benefits. Wrap it up with your
contact info.

Check local law and custom before launching your Stick-em
marketing campaign. You may need to get permission before
distributing in someone else's building or on their grounds.
