Lots of Visitors But No Sales?

The most common problem people send me is, "I get lots of hits on

my website, but I'm not selling anything."

 

Fortunately, the answer is often simple. Newspapers have long

known that anything "above the fold" gets far more reader

attention than articles "below the fold." When an important story

gets placed below the fold on the front page, it is considered a

slap in the face. The editor doesn't think the topic is important

or doesn't want to offend an important advertiser by giving the

story a more noticed position.

 

Web sites work much the same. The top of your opening page gets

by far the most attention. A headline will always get more

attention than plain copy. I find that if I list five small

linked headlines at the top of my opening page, visitors click

the links in the order they appear from top to bottom.

 

This presents a problem for sites that have a doorway page

visitors see first. Doorway pages generally include only a logo

and graphic. A number of sites are now including a few links to

their most important pages on the doorway page. This insures

those important products and service are right up front, seen

from the first moment the reader clicks to the site.

Producing Your TV Commercial - Cheap!

One of the most expensive parts of advertising on TV is getting

your commercial produced. That average 30 second TV spot costs

around $200,000 to produce. Of course, you can find far, far

cheaper ways to get an affordable spot.

 

Your commercial should look professional. Any touch of amateurism

will sink your spot from the beginning (unless the junkie look is

part of a gimmick that makes sense to viewers).

 

TV production equipment used to cost tens of thousands of

dollars. Now anyone can own a digital video camera that gives a

professional film look. The cost of these cameras is $1,500 or

less making it possible for one person production houses to do

work up to Hollywood standards.

 

Find out who does small-time, inexpensive TV production by

checking Google, calling the creative director at a local ad

agency, or contacting the production departments of TV stations

in your area. Everyone in media knows everyone else and will be

happy to give you the name of a friend that does low-cost work.

 

Forget expensive actors. Run video of your product or service in

action and have a professional announcer read your copy. Check

local radio stations for a DJ who has a pleasing voice and good

delivery. Offer them $50 to read your 30 second copy.

Raise Your Prices

This week a woman wrote to ask the best way to raise the prices
for her products. She wanted to charge a higher price without
turning off her current customers.

That is a good concern. Every business has a main group of
customers who provide up to 80% of their business.

Customers in this core group are usually similar in many ways.
Make the wrong move and you could alienate the entire bunch.
Losing your core customers can spell disaster for a business. A
good example of this was when McDonalds spent 20 years courting
families with kids, then recently moved away from serving kids
alienating their core customers.

I find that customers don't mind a price increase if they can see
your product or service is a good value. Since my prices are
still lower than most competitors (an important factor for my
core customers), I tell them something like this. "The price is
xxxx. Others charge xxx more. That means you pay xxx less for a
high quality product when you buy from me."

There is nothing wrong with having prices that are higher than
your competitors. It must be clear to customers that they are
getting important extra benefits.

Take Advantage of Cheap TV

TV prices have been coming down for over a decade. There used to
be just three network TV stations in your town. Now you likely
have FOX, WB, several other independents, and a bevy of low power
TV stations. You may have 100 more channels available on cable.
You have a neighborhood video store stacked with choices...and
digital video delivery is now in full bloom.

With all those choices, audiences are split in much smaller
groups. TV outlets can't charge near as much for commercials as
they did back in the old days. In lots of markets TV ad prices
are lower than radio's and far lower than the daily newspaper's.

Cable TV can target certain parts of town and make your ads even
more effective for a lower price.

A TV station's lowest prices probably aren't published. You will
have to call the sales manager at the station to get them. Expect
far lower prices when your ads run outside prime time, on cable
channels, or in packages of multiple commercials.

Best Time to Promote an Affiliate Link

We are just a few weeks away from the BEST time of year to
promote an affiliate program. This is also true for MLM or any
other type of income opportunity.

The first of January kicks off a brief season when millions of
people are determined to improve their lives. Folks by the droves
are full of enthusiasm and just looking for a business
opportunity that could make them money in the coming year.

January is a HUGE time to sign up new members!

This January may be the biggest biz opp season we've seen in many
years. A respected Wall Street expert I know told me small
business will have new energy and sales will be up in the coming
year, even if the economy chooses not to cooperate.

But don't wait until January to get started. By the time your
ads, articles, press releases, and web pages get out there, the
prime sign up season will be over.

Get started NOW and you'll be ready to launch the day after
Christmas (when the season really first begins.)

* Articles are still the number one way to grab people who are
ready to buy. An article makes you look like an expert, a leader,
and someone people can trust to help them profit. iSnare.com has
a low-cost article distribution program, but it can take them a
full month to send your article out to their thousands of
contacts. Put your article on EzineArticles.com. Google loves
that site and never misses a new article.

A press release can also work well for you. In many ways, a press
release works just like an article, getting your name and message
out there in impressive places. These days there are several
excellent free distribution services. Check out PR.com and
PRLeap.com.

Niching with Different Website Entry Pages

One reader wrote to ask why some web promotion experts say "Never
send people directly to your website's opening page. Always send
them to an entry page."

By having different entry pages, you can customize your look and
copy for specific groups of people.

Let's say you sell products to the general public and you also
sign up people to distribute your products for a cut of the
profits. The headlines and copy you use to interest a product
customer will probably be quite different from the way you pitch
someone interested in your business opportunity.

Different entry pages also allow you to get more search engine
action. Most search engines favor sites that have a lot of
information on a specific, narrowly defined subject.

I have to say, though, I can't figure out why so many sites have
an entry page that is nothing more than a big graphic with a link
to the main page. That seems to me to be a big waste of a good
marketing opportunity. Have your entry pages clearly tell readers
what you offer them. Give them some exciting copy. Don't make
them click through several pages to find out what benefits you
offer.

Target Certain Personality Types

You have probably noticed that your customers come in several
personality types. Some need very little time to make up their
mind. As soon as they get a quick idea of what you're selling,
they want to buy--NOW!

Other customers take lots of time. They ask for details on a half
dozen issues. Then they're back a day or two later with more
questions. You hear from them a week later with even more
questions. Finally, just when you've decided this person is never
going to buy, they place their order.

Experts divide customers in several distinct personality types.
There are headstrong leader types who are always moving forward.
They tend to buy quickly. Others are very emotional. If it feels
good, they do it.

On the other side of the personality range are those of us who
won't buy unless we're given a logical, step-by-step explanation
and sequence to follow. That type of person needs more time,
nurturing, and may be turned off by a pressure sale. This type of
person also makes up close to half of all customers.

You may not be able to satisfy everyone of these types with your
marketing. Some companies are very successful targeting just one
group. Others gear their marketing and advertising to work for
several personality types.

I often include major points in bold with bullets and underline.
That helps the "need to do it fast" person. Elsewhere on the page
I give more details and a blow-by-blow account of how the product
or service is used and can be purchased.

Getting Effective Direct Mail Lists

I recently ran into an old friend who has successfully run his
family's small business for decades. Over the years Tom has tried
every advertising method imaginable from radio to newspapers and
now the Internet.

Tom never misses a chance to talk marketing and I'm always
delighted to find out what kind of results he's getting. "You
know what kind of advertising has consistently gotten us sales
year after year?" he said.

"Simple direct mail." Sending out sales letters, brochures, and
small catalogues via regular mail CAN be one of the most powerful
marketing tools available.

My ears perked up when Tom told me this. Because lists of
addresses are often old or not very good, many people get
disappointing results from direct mail. The cost of stamps and
printed materials can really add up.

"We get our mailing lists from associations and Chamber of
Commerce offices. They have excellent lists of businesses in
their area which makes for a great way to build business-to-
business sales," he said. These lists are packed with owners and
managers who are authorized to buy products and services for
their entire company. Association and Chamber of Commerce lists
are also kept up-to-date.

Use the Gale Directory of Associations (available through your
library) and the Yellow Pages and Google for Chamber of Commerce
info.
