Mary told me she would love to promote her home biz on local
radio talk shows, but was afraid stations wouldn't want her. "I
sell nutritional supplements with a network marketing company,"
she said. "A lot of media people don't understand our industry
and will not give us any coverage."
This is a common problem not just for MLMers, but for a great
many other businesses as well. Media either thinks your topic is
too specialized for the audience or media managers don't
understand how important your information is.
In these cases, get off the topic. Instead of talking about your
business or opportunity, talk about a related topic that a lot of
people in the audience will find interesting.
For example, Mary could approach her local radio station, TV talk
show, or newspaper with these popular topics: "How to start a
business from home and get through the first year."
"Tips for working at home while trying to raise small children."
"How to keep your home work space organized and productive."
"New government regulations that are hurting/helping small
business."
During the interview, Mary could add, "Call 1-800-etc. to get my

-or- 'I have a free report you can get on how to choose a good
business opportunity.'" Both the brochure and report would
promote her business.

Put Together Your Own Press Kit

Press kits are a great way to generate free media publicity. You
can send them to TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, and Internet
publications. There is no firm rule on what needs to be included
in your press kit, but you will look like a pro if you follow
these simple steps.
1. Include a one sheet on your company background. This gives the
reporter a good idea of what your company does, who is in charge,
and what you sell. Tell how your company started and list
important customers.
2. Include your press release. This is a single sheet that
announces newsworthy information. It can be a new product
announcement or info the media audience will find interesting.
3. Add a photo or two, if appropriate, and a brochure. These are
optional but can help to fill out your package.
4. Include a question and answer sheet. Think of questions the
press might ask (or you would like them to ask). Write down those
questions along with the answers. You will be surprised at how
often media folks will follow your Q&A during an interview.
5. Put it all in a folder with your company name on the front. Be
sure to include telephone numbers and email addresses where you
can be contacted at all times.

Everything is delivered fast, fast, fast these days. I ordered a
computer from a store four states away and it was on my doorstep
by breakfast the next morning.
Fast is great for big product retailers, but the new super-speed
of business is a huge pain in the neck for many skilled service
folks.
No matter how hard you try, good old-fashioned work done by
humans just takes time.
I was in a terrific little family restaurant that serves some of
the best food in town. They were swamped with a sudden rush of
business.
A customer became irate because service was taking longer than
what she had come to expect from fast food operations.
You will get much better work from craftspeople, writers,
designers, and experts if you give them plenty of time to do the
job.
Plan well in advance and order early if you can.
Many creative folks need time to recharge between jobs. A top
website logo designer warns customers it may take three weeks
before he even starts on their logo. It often takes that long to
come up with an exceptional concept (which he does on a regular
basis).
I try to achieve a happy medium by having copy ready for clients
within a few days after they order.
