BIG Money and FREE Computers

I write a lot of classified ads for people to use in e-zines and
on free classifieds web sites. Over time I've found two subject
lines and headlines that work far better than anything else.

I can't say for sure that these headlines SELL products and
services, but they sure get response.

Mention big money in your subject line.

"Earn $1,000 extra money!"

"I earned $2,000 the first week!"

I guess we all would like to grab a windfall. People respond to
these ads like crazy.

By far the most successful subject line I've seen was one
offering a FREE computer. Response out performed any other
headline by a factor of five. If you are doing a lot of
advertising, buying a low-cost computer to give away might be a
good way to put plenty of extra zip in your ad campaign.

Cheesy? You bet. But cheesy often works in the world of
advertising. Remember that many folks don't think too hard about
what they see advertised. They simply respond, often on a gut
level.

Advertise on Placemats

Last week I was in a small town diner when I realized I had spent
15 minutes reading the placemat. It was a paper placemat with an
add for the restaurant in the middle and business-card-sized ads
for local businesses around the edge.

Those advertising on the mat included a hardware store, a lawyer,
somebody who pruned trees, and a small insurance office.

No question about it, this is small-time advertising at its best.
Several hundred people sit in the restaurant each day reading the
placemats while they wait for their order to arrive. Almost all
of these readers are local customers who can use the products and
services advertised. Even the daily newspaper isn't this targeted
or well-read.

Those advertising on the place matt were actually involved in a
low-cost regional ad campaign. The same mats were customized and
distributed to a number of restaurants throughout the area by a
local firm who coordinated the effort.

Look for a service like this in your area. Ask local restaurant
managers. They may be the first to know about a good service.

Offer Products at Cost

Here is a strategy that many big corporations use, but is rarely
used by small businesses. It is one of the most effective ways to
get new customers.

Offer a good product (or service) at cost. One book publisher
offered their $13 book for just 90 cents to major companies they
really wanted as customers. Ninety cents was their cost to
produce the book in large quantities.

The companies were interested in the book and couldn't pass up
the incredible bargain. They all ordered copies for dozens of
employees and departments. In the end, the small publishing firm
created a customer relationship with many major companies they
wouldn't have been able to reach.

Think of a popular product or service you can offer at a greatly
reduced price. Department stores do this all the time, calling
them "loss leaders." Loss leaders are hotly advertised to get
people into the store. Those customers will likely also buy other
products sold at the regular price.

I always offer a few marketing deals under $50. These aren't big
profit producers, but they interest lots of new customers who
then go on to buy bigger products and services.

Display Past Jobs

Do you provide custom work for people? One of the most difficult
aspects of your job may be finding out just exactly what a
customer wants. Many people have a hard time describing what they
want. You quickly discover that a word that means one thing to
you can mean something very different to a customer.

One useful technique is to give customers a list of past jobs.
Many times they can point to a job you did that is just like, or
very similar to the one they want. A list of past work can also
help customers who can't quite decide what they want. They can
use your examples to zero in on a more specific description.

One group of Realtors had a difficult time figuring out what
customers wanted. Customers used vague descriptions that caused
confusion and wasted time. The Realtors put up a web page with
photos of all the properties they had sold the previous year.
"Pick one that looks like what you want. We will try to find you
another property just like it."
