The Only Two Headlines

As any experienced journalist can tell you, the media really only has two headlines:  Oh, the wonder of it AND Oh, the shame of it.
When the Internet started taking off in 1996, the papers were full of Oh the wonder of it headlines.  We constantly heard fantastic stories about how the Web would change our lives.
Then, in 1997, when nobody seemed to be selling anything online, the media switched to their Oh the shame headline.  The Net was overblown, a flash in the pan, a big money waster.
Then at Christmas of 1998 ecommerce sales soared and the Net was off and running again.  Most recently tech stocks dropped and papers like USA Today announced the "fading of Dot-Com."
This past week the media jumped back to Oh the Wonder headlines when Yahoo posted better than expected profits.  With that one simple turn of events the media tells us the wondrous Internet economy is back with a vengeance.
Media workers, like folks in any industry, like to cram the world into a few story lines they are familiar with.  Learn how to anticipate which headline the media is leaning toward.  Figure out ways to fit your business news into what media is looking for.  Free publicity will follow.

Where can you get lots of eager customers fast?  Start by directing your marketing at techies and enthusiasts. These are people who take real pleasure from being the very first to use something new.
Techies (and I use the word loosely to include super-enthusiasts in any field) LIKE to read the manual BEFORE they try the product.  You know the techie in your group.  It's the person you call when you can't hook up your VCR, get your modem to work, or your new car stereo installed.
Techies often don't have a lot of money, but they do influence lots of other people.  When the techie says your product is good, many others follow.
The best way to reach techies early in your marketing campaign is to start word-of-mouth.  Give away early versions of your product or service.  Encourage super enthusiasts to spread the word to everyone they know. Add lots of impressive features.

Write Powerful Headlines for a Great First Impression

Headlines are the first, and often the most important part ofyour web site, sales letter, classified ad, email, or businesscard. And if your headline is a good one, the rest of your copyis likely to be read.How do you make sure your headline gets attention?
 
I like to start a headline with an action word (or verb if youthink back to high school English): EARN 20% more, TAKE time torelax, LOSE weight fast, PROFIT right away.  All of these startwith an action word that stresses an enabling change for thereader.
 
Focus the rest of your headline on how your product or servicewill make your customer FEEL. While most of us like to think wemake a purchase based on logic, studies show emotion plays a bigrole: LOSE WEIGHT FAST and feel sexy again!
 
Customers feel good when your headline promises to removesomething that is bothering them or add something that will makethem feel wealthier, sexier, more relaxed, or loved.
 
Above all else, your headline must be clear. Using plain, easy-to-read words will communicate your meaning best to customers in a hurry.

My understanding (though I'm not a lawyer) is new national spam law says you have to give people a real way to get off your list--- no phony email addresses or unsubscribe links that don't work.  It also says things that have been the law forever...like don't try to con people or send them pornography they don't want.  Most ezines are in compliance already, and shouldn't have a problem.  Hopefully they will go after the big spammers who break all the rules.  That's what these laws really seem to be about.

People love contests. They love the anticipation, the suspense,
and the thrill of believing they would win something...anything.

I know several people who will call in to every radio contest
they hear about, even if they don't know what the prize is. The
simple idea of winning makes them want to enter.

Statistically, about 20% of the public will enter a contest if
asked. That may not sound like a huge percentage, but in total
numbers, that's a lot of people. If you asked 1,000 people to
enter your contest and 200 of them did, that's 200 more people
who know who you are.

Contests can really get people familiar with your business. And
if you put on a show or stage an event along with it, you could
get great word of mouth or even end up on the news. Give away a
product or service that relates to your business. Mention your
contest on your letterhead, website, and business cards. Do a
postcard campaign or send out a press release.

Be sure to let the public and other entrants know who won the
contest. This follow-up will remind people about the contest and
put your name back in their heads.

How to Win, the Nice Way

Give your customers as few problems as possible while they are
using your service or buying your product. Problems happen when
everything is "going fine" and laziness and complacency set it.
When this happens, try causing some "problems." Teach yourself
and your employees that things can be done with more care and
precision. When customers have a problem-free experience, you
are sure to reap the rewards.

It is important to concentrate on what you're doing, not what
the competitor is doing. Focus on giving the best service you
can, instead of worrying about the competition across the street.
If a competitor is doing much more business than you, it may be
that there is a problem with your business, not something amazing
the competitor is doing. Don't hurt yourself by worrying so much
about someone else that you forget what you could be doing to
improve your product or service.

satisfied: your customers, employees, suppliers, and neighbors

Tout Your Success, But Tell Your Failures

Let's face it: most of us tried to succeed in business many times
before we saw much success. Very few of us turn real profits the

item. With that in mind, what is the best time to go out with a
Press Release?

Usually, if you want to go after radio, TV, and newspapers, it's
best to hit them right about the time the weather starts turning
cold. Magazines usually need a couple months lead time, but
there aren't many magazines on most media lists.

Of course, if you're trying to get advance orders for the
product, you may want to start in August when companies are about
to get their fall merchandise. It all depends on what you're
selling and who you plan to sell it to.

An ezine is an email newsletter (originally it was short for
electronic magazine...but that name didn't stick).

Mostly an ezine is a great way to stay in touch with
people who have visited your site or contacted you for
more information. Often people will be on your ezine
list for weeks, months, even years before they buy something.
An ezine can bring you sales week after week for as long
as you publish it.

Q: Kevin,

Is it a good idea to resubmit your website to the major search
engines every 4 weeks? Should you submit your site to Yahoo and
Google continually? Will this upset the people at these sites or
not? I know Google drives results for Yahoo, AOL, MSN, and a
couple of other search engines/directories.

Good to hear from you. Experts differ on this and search engines
are constantly changing. These days Google checks back
automatically. If you frequently change content on your site
(especially your home page), Google will make a point of coming
back more often. Some of the big news sites that change
headlines constantly get visited by Google several times a day.
Other active sites get a visit once a week, etc.
