Whether your biz is online or off, making customerscomfortable with buying from you is key to sales.
We can take a tip from the Mail Order industry. Mail Ordernever took off until they started offering a money-backguarantee. If you sell a product that can be returned, stateyour guarantee prominently. If you sell a service, offer tokeep working on the project until the customer is satisfied.
While you're at it, make the returns process easy. A recentstudy showed customers are irritated with a great manycompanies that make it big hassle to return faultymerchandise.
Lots of people still don't trust online order forms. Set themat ease by explaining what happens to their information afterthey press "submit."
Put a photo on your site of you, your store, or youremployees. This makes you more tangible to Internetshoppers.

Create Your Media Calendar

There is no such thing as instant publicity. Getting lots offree media takes planning. Newspapers need a day or morelead time, weekly papers need up to a week, and magazinesrequire a month or two.
Radio and TV generally needs very little lead time, but theyalso have to wade through a mountain of people trying toget publicity. To get results, you often have to submit yourpress release or story idea several times over weeks.
You can easily keep everything organized and movingforward by creating your own media calendar. Make a listof media you would like to cover your upcoming event orproduct announcement. Find out and note the lead timethat each publication or show requires.
Many publications issue a schedule of topics they will coverin the months ahead. You can send them a storycorresponding with a scheduled theme at the exact timeeditors are looking for material on that topic. This greatlyincreases you chances of getting free coverage.

We're an advertising agency that is not using all of it'sresources to get the word out. We have sent our promos about ourcompany and followed it with brochures which we designed inhouse. Our problem is we are not getting any bites from anyoneyet. I realize it is slow going in the beginning but our rate ofcustomer is 1% at this time. Our mail focus is the legalcommunity. We targeted them with our direct mail pieces and evengiven tours of our facility. So now what?
We are currently looking at local advertisement with televisionstations and radio as well as newspaper ads. Have we coveredeverything. This week we are sending our walkers to meet andgreet with the general public. They will be handing our directmail piece and discussing our companies benefits and specials.

One percent on direct mail is about right. I think you'll dofine. They key is to try everything you can think of and canafford and it looks like you've got that covered pretty well.Eventually all the strategies start working together. You startto appear everywhere for your target prospects.

Some communities don't care about fliers. Others have lawsagainst them or people strongly feel they don't belong. Also becareful about property owners who don't want fliers in theirparking lot, etc. It's best to check your local situation first.When done right, fliers are a great low-cost way topromote a small business. Getting Your Email to Go Through

Have you had trouble getting email from people who say they sentit? Or your messages aren't getting to others?
As servers try desperately to filter out the ever increasingonslaught of spam, more than a few non-spam messages are gettingmopped up as well.
Here are a few simple ways to get around the problem.
1. Get one or two different email addresses. Get a Hotmailaddress. Use the free address your ISP provides you. When acustomer calls saying, "didn't you get the five emails I sentyou?" suggest they send again to one of your other addresses.
2. The same idea works in reverse. When a customer can't getyour messages, ask if they have a different address. Chances aretheir server is filtering out a lot of their mail and they'vealready considered the additional address solution.
3. Watch for attachments getting blocked. Many people arekeeping out viruses sent by attachment by refusing allattachments or those over a certain size. I paste the documentinto the body of the message in those cases.
4. Ask your site host to reduce the level of filtering on youremail. Many can do this. Of course, you'll get more spam, butyou will also get fewer cases where customers can't get email toyou.

Some stores have had great success pulling people inside byfeaturing a winning birth date. The date changes each day,Jan 5 one day, March 12 the next, Sept 16 the third, and soon.
When someone walks in and shows their birthday is on thefeatured date, they get a sizable discount or free prize.
Other places don't announce the winning birth date inadvance. They check birth dates of people who buy andaward surprise prizes to those with the right dates. This isthe kind of thing that delights customers and creates goodword of mouth.

Here's why. Small businesses and startups who don't have muchmoney to spend must rely on good old fashioned creativity.Since big media ads are out of the question, they look for cheapor free ways to market. Those methods are often fresh,innovative, and attention-getting.
Here are some terrific low-cost ways to market your business.And boy do they get noticed:* Take extra care in how you answer the phone. Be bright,helpful, and eager to go the extra mile.
* Put a colorful flyer in with invoices and sales letters.Highlight special deals only current and past customers can get.
* If your store or office is on a busy corner, stand outside fora period each day and get to know those who pass by.
* Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.
* Spot radio stations setting up for a live remote. Arrange tooffer free prizes to their listeners (in turn they will mentionyou, even interview you on the air.)

Get A List Of Club Members

Nothing gets sales like good targeted direct marketing.Targeting is the key. If you send your sales letter or postcardto only those people who are intensely interested in what yousell, you will have more customers than you know what to do with.
Here is an easy way to get super-targeted names. Contact clubsand associations who have members who would be very interested inwhat you sell. Show the leader of the club why his members wouldlove to hear about your business. You can often get a list ofmembers and addresses for cheap or free.
Anika designs and sews costumes for dance students. She has anattractive web site and can work with customers just aboutanywhere.
Using a search engine, Anika finds several associations of danceteachers and their students. Two are in her city, one covers herstate, and several more are national.
She first calls the presidents of the clubs in her city. Sheexplains over the phone how her service can benefit teachers,students, and their parents. She schedules an appointment tovisit with the club leader, show samples of her work, and leavesa brochure filled with enthusiastic comments from past customers.She will also leave with the club's mailing list.
Many national groups sell their member list at low cost. Onebusiness man I know does exceptionally well getting member listsfrom the local chamber of commerce in cities he wants to target.

I am a one person business in Airlie Beach; North QueenslandAustralia. Our population here is around 3000. Airlie is a HUGEtourist area, just off the coast is the Great Barrier Reef; somany developers build vacation units and the such here.
I have done the "Newspaper Ads", the "Tourism Whitsunday BusinessExpo" and also some of the local markets. I have sent outletters to builders outlining my experience in the SoftFurnishings, Color and Flooring industry - even door knocked andwent through the telephone book and made cold-canvas phone calls!Our local phone book is not due out till October; so until then Ineed ways in which to attract more business.

Pick out thepromotion methods that worked best for you or held the mostpromise and keep doing them as often as your budget allows. Overthe years I've noticed that a new business barely does anybusiness the first year, then business picks up the second year,and by the third or fourth year they've got more business thanthey can handle. Train With Your Own Video

Do you hire lots of employees or enlist many new sales repsor affiliates? Consider training them with a video.
In this age where most of us where raised on hours oftelevision each day, a simple video is often the easiest wayto learn new material. Often, you can give a new hire aprinted manual and it will never get read. Studies show aspeaker in front of an audience only connects with about 10percent of the people most of the time.
You can create your own training video with a home videocamera and some simple editing equipment. Go one stepbetter and hire a small local video production firm. There is a lot more important info to learn in a trainingvideo than in your average TV sit-com. Have theannouncer speak slowly. Leave gaps in the audio withplenty of time to visually demonstrate how something isdone.
You can also feature your training video at trade fairs andconventions. It may be just what is needed to explain howyour business, product, service, or idea works. Alsoconsider streaming your video from your web site.

Customers love it when your ad or web copy tells a story. Peopleeverywhere have been telling stories since caveman days. It's anatural way to get prospects to pay attention to you.
Take a paragraph to describe how the customer FEELS before theybuy your product or service. Then tell how they feel AFTER theybuy from you.
The customer might feel pressured, overworked, and tired. "Youwork longer and harder every day only to find yourself fallingfurther behind. After a while you just don't feel the enthusiasmthat used to propel you through the day."

Checkwith the Patent and Trademark office at http://www.uspto.gov/They have a handy search feature that lets you see ifanyone else has already trademarked your name. You cantrademark words or trademark how those words look in print(for example, the look of your logo).
