When oldies radio stations want to take their listeners back
to the 1950s and 1960s, they often play commercial jingles
from those eras. Those of us who remember those days can
walk through a grocery store and...from the deep recesses
of our memories...sing 40 year-old jingles to a great many
products on the shelves.

Your own music track--played over and over in your radio
commercials, on your phone hold, on your website, and
over speakers in your store--can be a powerful marketing
tool.

In the past businesses have paid from $5,000 to $200,000 to
have professional musicians compose, perform, and record
their music track. These days every city and town of every
size has excellent musicians just waiting for someone to ask
them to work. Many have outstanding digital home
recording studios that surpass the multi-million dollar big
label studios of the past.

Bottom line: You can use local musicians to compose and
record your music track for as little as a few hundred
dollars.

Ask local music stores and music teachers about capable
musicians. Check with recording studios listed in the phone
book and in entertainment newspapers. Find one or two
pieces of music that sound similar to what you want. This
will help musicians zero in on the sound you are after.

created as a "work for hire" so that you keep the copyright.

Most customers have very busy lives and don't always
remember what they did and where. When I worked in
radio, we were often stunned to learn people often couldn't
remember which station they won a prize from.

The same goes for customers. People may buy from you,
then forget who they bought from just a few weeks later.
That is a real problem if you are depending on word of
mouth (which you should!).

Put your logo bright and bold on every one of your order
forms. Make sure your name is stamped onto your
customer's memory at the time of the sale.

Some smart business people turn their order form into a
brochure. They include an ad and a full list of their
products and services. The order form is on the final page.

Q: Kevin,

I have an e-newsletter where I give tips on running an Internet
business. My question is, each issue I try to give new programs
that are good and report programs that are scams. Should I just
rotate opportunities each issue or only include a few each time?
I generally introdcue 5 or 6 opportunites each issue which is
every other or third day. Is that to many opportunities?

I don't get many takers, but I have only had a newletter for 2
1/2 months now and already 1005 people have opted in to read it.

I must be doing somthing good to keep them as subscribers--but
they won't sign up for the business opportunites.

Any idea how to resolve it so I get more sign-ups?

I agree you're doing something right. 1005 subscribers in less
than 3 months is very good. You might do better to include
around 3 opportunities in each issue. It may take more time for
people to start to completely trust your information and sign up
for the opportunities. Keep the good information coming and it
will happen.

One of the Net's best tools to turn yourself into a recognized
expert in your field are discussion groups. These can be UseNet
newsgroups (check with your Internet Service Provider for how to
find them, or do a web search) or they can be discussion groups
on web sites. There are also email discussion groups, sometimes
called listservs or majordomos.

Pick two or three groups to participate in. Join, then hide and
watch for a while. Get to know what kinds of topics are
discussed. When someone asks a question, be the one to give them
a good, solid answer. Answer a question once or twice each week.
Keep your answer strictly non-commercial, but include your name,
email, and website at the end.

Five Ways to Make Newspaper Ads Sell

Newspapers usually command 80 percent of the ad revenue in anycity. That's because newspaper advertising works.
Here are five ways to make your newspaper ads sell:
1. Put your main benefit in your headline. Ads that try to becute, or get people guessing about what they offer may work forsome, but it's a risky way to go. You'll do better if yourheadline clearly says what you are trying to sell and why peopleshould buy it.
2. Give people a time limit. Make your sale one day only. Put abig expiration date on your coupon. There are a lot of adscompeting with yours. A time limit will encourage people to acton your offer now, rather than someone else's.
3. Use the same logo or look in every ad. People will learn torecognize you without having to read the ad. Even when theydon't have time to review your offer, they will sense yourpresence and remember you another day.
4. Try those tricks newspapers like. They work. Put a borderaround your ad or include an arrow, icon, or bold text to makeyour ad stand out.
5. Show a picture of your product or service in action. Peoplereading the paper look at pictures first, then read the copy.

Prospecting in Chat Rooms

Recently I asked Kevin Ammons how he built his massivedownline of 1,000 people. Kevin told me he did it almostentirely in chat rooms on AOL.
I've heard others say this, too. One man told me gettingnew customers this way is "like shooting fish in a barrel."

Market With Education

One of the biggest reasons customers don't buy or don't buy againis they aren't educated about your product or service. Theynever fully understand how to use your product or even why it isgood for them.
Make sure you work to educate customers. Give them a tutorial onyour web site that answers common questions and tells customershow to use your product or service.
Show customers ways your product or service could under deliver.Explain why and how things can be corrected to bring the bestpossible results.
For example, I spend a lot of time educating customers aboutadvertising and PR. Many have the impression they can send out apress release and dozens of reporters will immediately callasking for interviews. In reality, editors often use a pressrelease as a news story without telling the business. Ratherthan wait for the phone to ring, you do better to monitor thehits to your web site. Get a sudden bump and you know your pressrelease has been used by the media somewhere.
If I take time to explain this to customers, they know what toexpect. We get fewer dissatisfied customers and more who knowhow to get the maximum results for their business.
If you have employees, make it a point to educate them about yourproducts, services, and business. The more they know, the morethey can help educate customers. It's a critical part of sellingand marketing.

Marketing With Voice Mail

Voice mail has become a great way for business people to avoidsalespeople. By using voice mail, they can decide which callsthey want to return. It is much easier for them to not call backthen to say "no".
Of course, voice mail can be extremely frustrating forsalespeople. Sometimes it can seem nearly impossible for asalesperson to get through to their prospects. Here are somestrategies to beat voice mail at its own game.
Although I always like to leave a message (it's just one moreopportunity for you to get your name in front of a prospect),some experts are saying the opposite. The theory goes you shouldnever leave a message on voice mail if you don't have to. For themost part, prospects don't call back. Instead, keep callinguntil you get the real person on the phone.
If the call goes directly to the voice mail, try pushing "0" andask the operator to page the prospect. Or you could try askingfor another department. Tell whoever answers that you have thewrong extension and ask them to connect you to the "decisionmaker."
Sound a bit devious? Not if what you have is GOOD for theprospect (and I'm sure it is!).
If possible, call early in the morning or later in the evening.The "decision makers" often work longer hours than everyone else.This is likely the best time for you to get a hold of them.
If after trying everything you still have to leave a voicemessage, make sure you leave one that will get them to returnyour call. Leave only your name and phone number. Try somethinglike "This is Bob. I have some exciting news. Please call meat...." Or leave your main benefit "This is Bob. I've got a wayyou can save 20% on your costs." You'd be surprised how manypeople will call you just out of curiosity.

How Prospects Decide

Before people buy from you, they consider a couple of things. Thefirst thing a prospect looks at is YOU. As you're trying to sellthem your product or service, a customer is deciding whether theylike you or if they will even listen to you. Remember, it hasbeen said that people make a decision about you in less thanseven seconds.
Another important element prospects consider is trust. Studieshave shown that 71% of the purchasing decision is based on trustbetween the salesperson and the prospect. So, what things can youdo to help make a good impression in less than seven seconds andhelp build trust? Here are a few ideas:
Be sure you speak slowly. If you speak too quickly you will givethe impression that you are unsure of yourself or nervous. Alsoremember to keep eye contact. This will help assure the prospectthat you are confident and are paying attention them.
Make sure that you talk about THEM, THEIR company and THEIRgoals. Ask questions, listen, and don't interrupt. People don'tlisten as closely when you talk about yourself.
Get to the point quickly. People are in a big hurry these days.Don't take more of their time than you have to. It's a good ideato ask them if it is a good time to speak. They will appreciatethe fact that their needs are being considered.

We're selling an e-book on a very popular topic (and so far wedon't see any competition, at least in e-book form). Althoughwe're modeling our site and advertising on another site thatsells an e-book for $39.95, it also seems like a lot of e-bookssell for this strange $97 price.
Our question is this: Is there a reason this $97 price seems tobe so common, or am I just imagining this?

What's Wrong With Overture and Google AdWords?

Just about every day I hear from somebody who says, "I get 200hits a day to my site but no sales." When I ask how they get allthose visitors who don't buy, they tell me from advertising inpay-per-click search engines and on Google.
This is such a common problem that a number of theories arestarting to circulate. One of my favorites is Overture is payingpeople in poor countries to sit all day and click on paid links.
The real reason behind the lack of success with pay-per-clickvisitors is probably a lot simpler. These people don't buy fromyou specifically, because they have so many other choices.
When you search for "website promotion," you don't just find onelisting, click there and buy. You click through a number of thelistings, maybe even page after page. Because you have so manychoices, it may take you several days of research before you buy.
What can you do to improve sales with pay-per-click advertising?Design your landing page for somebody who wants to find out aboutyou and your service with a nothing more than a quick glance.Include your main benefits in a bold headline. Give your productor services key features in short bulleted text. Include theprice in large type. Also have a few customer comments that toutyour main benefits.

One way to get the media to pay attention this year would be topoint out an individual (or better yet, a family with kids) whowere among the middle class not long ago, but are now homelessdue to layoffs, illness, etc. Media are always looking for alocal tie-in to a national theme they've been covering.
