Make `Em Email You

I started my business out on the Internet with the emphasison email communication with customers and prospects.
Sure, I talked with a lot of customers on the phone,especially in the early days of the Internet when a lot ofpeople didn't feel comfortable buying until they made phonecontact. But the vast majority of orders came after writingback and forth with customers via email.
Recently we hired more staff and added a toll free numberprominently featured on every page of DrNunley.com.Phone calls picked up, but email STILL far outstrips thephone as the best way to get sales.
Here's why. The telephone is spoken communication.When we talk our meaning doesn't go in a straight line. Wetend to talk in circles, going back over the important pointsagain and again (don't feel like I'm picking on you, theentire world does this when they talk).
Writing is linear in its logic (as scientists say). When youwrite, your ideas must march along one after anotherwithout doubling back. This may not be the mostcomfortable way to communicate, but writing makes peopleorganize their ideas and get to the point.
This very simple difference between talking and writing maybe at the root of why so many businesses find they maketheir real sales from email and not from the telephone.

Promote to Local Media

Media are constantly looking for new stories andinformation that will interest their audiences.
Chances are, your town has at least one major newspaper,several smaller papers, a few TV stations, a bunch of radiostations, and at least one cable company.
Local media like to cover local stories. You have a muchbetter chance of getting free publicity from a reporter inyour area than from national media.
Send media a press release when you have something newto announce: a new product, service, public serviceprogram, or alliance with another business.
Small businesses often make good feature stories. Workup a sheet of helpful tips related to your business. Makesure they are things the media audience will be interestedin.
Local talk radio stations and programs are constantly inneed of interesting guests. Watch for times when your areaof expertise fits with a breaking story, holiday, or issue themedia is covering.
Work with local charities and blow your own horn.

Is it a good idea to resubmit your website to the major searchengines every 4 weeks? Should you submit your site to Yahoo andGoogle continually? Will this upset the people at these sites ornot? I know Google drives results for Yahoo, AOL, MSN, and acouple of other search engines/directories.

Good to hear from you. Experts differ on this and search enginesare constantly changing. These days Google checks backautomatically. If you frequently change content on your site(especially your home page), Google will make a point of comingback more often. Some of the big news sites that changeheadlines constantly get visited by Google several times a day.Other active sites get a visit once a week, etc.

The simple answer to this question is that you can never be 100%sure. Media moods, activity on the newswire, and the kind ofbusiness you're trying to promote all play a part.
You can increase your chances of exposure by making sure yourrelease is of interest to the public (it really must benewsworthy or at least interesting), and sending it to the rightpeople (i.e. local papers are always more interested in localstories). Whatever you do, make sure the service you use (evenyourself) has specific names of editors they send releases to, soyour release doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

Keywords can be tricky. Sites often discover that people don'tsearch for them with the keywords they expected. Instead ofsearching for "sports equipment" they search for "footballsupplies." Rather than typing in "CPA" they type "bookkeepinghelp."
Think of all the different ways people describe what you do. Usethe same words and phrases you hear many of your customers use.
Big companies buy access to a database of keywords supplied bysearch engines. You can get similar results with programs thatcheck the effectiveness of your search terms.

Replace Your Business Card With a One Sheet

The problem with business cards is they generally don't giveenough information about your business. They only haveroom for your most basic contact info and maybe a sloganline about what you do.
A business card can't list your hottest services, your latestproducts, your upcoming bargains, or your philosophy oncustomer service.
These are often the factors that turn a meeting into a sale.Instead of handing out cards (or in ADDITION to handingout cards), pass out a one sheet. This is exactly what itsounds like, a single sheet of 8x11 paper printed on one orboth sides listing all the benefits I mentioned above.
Start your one sheet off with a headline at the top toutingyour most impressive and popular benefit. What is it youprovide that customers almost always go for? Next includea sub heading that explains your business a little more.
Follow that with a graphic (your photo, a picture of yourbuilding, etc.) and a pack of bulleted features/benefits. Alsoinclude testimonials from satisfied customers or recognizedexperts in your field.

Keyword in Your Title

Recently I spent a lot of time looking up competitors inmajor search engines. By far the biggest factor indetermining who got listed in the top ten of every searchengine was this: put your main keyword--the one peoplewill use to search for you--as the FIRST word in your title.
If you haven't done a lot of web design, the title is that lineof text that appears in a little box at the top or bottom ofyour browser. It goes in the HTML code near the top ofyour page.
For example, if I were going to put up a page on writingkeywords and wanted it listed high on search engines, Iwould write it:keyword in your title gives you top search engine listings
Notice I don't capitalize the K in keyword. Search engineswill match the way you write the word to the way userstype the word when they're searching for you. keyword isdifferent from Keyword is different from KEYWORD.Most people search using terms typed in all small letters.

Before and after photos are one of themost powerful marketing strategies around, and your businesscould probably produce the best before and after shots ever.Include those on your site, in your print advertising, and directmail pieces. Also use your testimonials heavily. Nothing worksbetter than a real customer talking about how awful the damagewas, but how you came in, set their worries at ease, and did agreat restoration.

It's best to send your release yourself to your local media.But about the only way to send to media nationwide is to doa mass send. I usually advise people to do the mass send,then send to a few local media themselves. Even if local mediaget the release from us, they appreciate hearing from the localbusiness.

Focusing on the Target

One of the definitive rules of marketing is to focus on yourtarget market; get them in your sights and them BAM! You've got amighty fine sale to put food on the table.
But many businesses would rather blanket the population with massmailings, operating under the assumption that out of all therecipients, some of them have got to be part of their targetedprospects.
Don't assume anything! Increase your chances of reaching theright customers by executing targeted mailings, not masssmotherings.
One way to figure out who you should target and what your messageshould be is to dig through your receipt files for names. Checkall kinds of documents, including purchase orders and invoices.
With these documents you can determine who is likely to buy fromyou, where you are making the most money, and what product linesor types of business can be put on the back burner, or eliminatedaltogether.
After classifying which customers are and are not buying fromyou, tailor letters to fit each group of targeted prospects.
You will find that you can execute targeted mailings as often asmass mailings, and your response rate will almost definitely goup.

The Perfect Classified Ad

Ever notice a classified ad that appears over and over, week
after week? It is somebody's Perfect Classified Ad. It may
not be a literary thing of beauty, or even an ad that is very
appealing--but for some reason it gets sales for its owner.

Getting your Perfect Classified Ad will come easier if you
follow a simple plan.

Write your ad in complete sentences. Then cut out non-
essential words to make your ad the required length. Start
sentences with action words. Use short phrases.

While you are at it, write several versions of your classified
ad. I usually try to knock out six at a time.

Next, test your ads. Run them all on free ad sites, in ezines,
newspapers, or magazines. Be sure to include a code in
your response info so you will know which ad produced the
inquiry or sale.

Once you find an ad that works well, leave it alone. Resist
the temptation to tweak an ad that is already successful.

Don't worry if you or your associates become bored with
the ad. Your audience is not as close to the ad and is
only assured by its repetition.

Differences Between Marketing Products and Services

About once a week I hear from someone who says "you
always write about how to market a product, but not a
service." A few days later I'll get a note from someone else
"you only write about marketing a service."

The truth is, there isn't much difference between marketing
a product and marketing a service. In both cases your main
objective should be to convince people you have benefits
they really want and need.

Most sales are based on emotion. We buy because the offer
makes us feel more secure, less hurried, more relaxed, or
just plain excited.

It's common knowledge that putting a photo of a product in
an ad or on a web site increases sales. Services can also
benefit from having a picture.

A photo of the owner or person performing the service
builds customer confidence. Even a simple shot of hands at
work can give a prospect an image to connect with your
service--an important mental step for many consumers.

Keywords can be tricky. Sites often discover that people don't
search for them with the keywords they expected. Instead of
searching for "sports equipment" they search for "football
supplies." Rather than typing in "CPA" they type "bookkeeping
help."

Think of all the different ways people describe what you do. Use
the same words and phrases you hear many of your customers use.

Big companies buy access to a database of keywords supplied by
search engines. You can get similar results with programs that
check the effectiveness of your search terms.
