Your Life as a Story in the Press

Recently I read through Ray Kroc's book "Grinding It Out"about how he created McDonalds. Then I picked up DaveThomas' "Dave's Way" on how he started Wendy's.
Both books make you admire these giants of fast food andboth were written by capable ghost writers.
There's a good lesson here that is well known to CEO's andwealthy entrepreneurs. You can have a professional writercreate the story of your life and get it printed as a magazinearticle, newspaper story, or even as a book. In fact, there'sno reason why you shouldn't be able to get your local TVnews programs interested, too.
Work with a good writer to pick out the interesting,exciting, or inspirational details about your life or the life ofyour business. The difference in a ho-hum everyday life andan exciting celebrity life has a lot to do with picking themore interesting details to tell about.
Try to find things that would make a specific audienceidentify with you. You might tell you story to inspirepeople who want to escape their 9 to 5 job or people whowant to solve a common problem in their industry.
Look for stories you can tell that will make readers feelemotion.

The Problem With Those LONG Web Site Letters

Over the last year or two it has become very popular to sella product on your web site with a long sales letter. Many ofthese letters go from 9 to 25 pages when pasted into a wordprocessor.
The trend started when several savvy Internet entrepreneursnoticed that 12 page sales letters work well for regular mailadvertising, so why no put a long letter on their web site?
That worked great for some, but it is working less and lessfor others. Just about every day I hear from someone with along web site letter that isn't selling anything for them.
I think I know why. How many of you love to read long,long copy on a computer? Not I (and I have to gulp hard tosay this since I've got 62 long articles on my site). Forthose of us who learned to read before the Internet, readinga long newspaper article or a book is OK, but long letterson a computer screen leave us a little cold.
The average web site visitor checks your headline to get abasic understanding of what the page has to offer her. Thenshe reads the first few paragraphs. If they don't impress herthat you've got what she needs, she's gone.
If she IS interested, she will skim down through your copyto catch you major points. If that tells her this really ISsomething she wants to consider, she'll go back to the topand read the whole page carefully.
We've found that most people read the headline, the firstfew paragraphs, then skip down to the next severalparagraphs that include a bold font. Highlight your keybenefits and features for quick reading.
Most of your sales will come from the 17% or so whodecide right away that they want to buy the product anddon't particularly care about all the details. You might wantto put order links at the top, middle, and end of the page, tocater to those customers.

Bruce David wrote with a big "right on!" Ten years agoBruce was hired to create a new fundraising letter for aCatholic charity. The group raises money for scholarshipsfor a Catholic education. The local Bishop and head Nunhad essentially written the same appeal letter for theprevious ten years resulting in declining contributions.
"What I did was to take a photo of a little girl who had beenawarded a scholarship and had her write a short note (onschool notebook paper) explaining why she was so happy tohave received the scholarship and the benefits of hereducation," Bruce said.

Write a Personal Letter

Personal letters are very powerful. Get a big stack of mail fromthe letter carrier and I'll bet you open the hand-addressesletter from a friend first. We often talk about making web sitecopy and newspaper ads carry the power of a letter. Why notmarket your business by simply writing a personal letter?
Keep your letter to a single page.
Make paragraphs short. I like three line paragraphs, but five orsix lines per paragraph is also fine. Longer paragraphs makeyour copy look dense and a long read to someone who is in ahurry.
Underlining and CAPITALS are good for a sales letter, but keepthem out of your personal letter.
Sign your letter in a different color ink than the color it isprinted in. Include a P.S. Sixty percent of readers read theP.S. before they read the rest of the letter. Have the P.S.restate your offer, your time limit, or urge the reader to callor email you.
Hand address your envelope and use a regular first class stamp.

I've found you can build trust pretty fast if you make it easyfor people to contact you, put your photo on your site, andinclude testimonials on your site
Of course, the quickest way to get trust is to do a good job forpeople, then have them tell others about you. When somebodyhears you're good from a friend, you're 80% of the way to a sale.

3 Types of Brochures

Do you sell a service? There is an infinite variety of salesmaterials that service providers use. However, there are a fewbasic types of sales literature; self-mailers, slim-jimbrochures, and fact sheets that work like gangbusters.
The self-mailer is sent through the mail without an outerenvelope. Most are simple in design and constructed by folding asingle piece of paper. The self-mailer is best used when sent to"cold prospects". You should never use this brochure toanswer a prospect's request for more information. It is likelythat they would see your self-mailer and mistake it for "junkmail".
Slim-jims, a thin brochure named for their slim size, are easilyslipped into standard business envelopes. Because of their smallsize, they do not need many designs and visuals. Slim-jims areeasy to read, and inexpensive to produce.
A fact sheet is printed on both front and back. They are cheapto produce and the easiest to update often. It is an 8 1/2-by 11-inch sheet of paper that is not folded but mailed flat inan envelope. The advantages of the fact sheet are that you caninclude more information as well as additional sheets of paper ifneeded.

How to Battle Copycats

What do you do when a competitor steals your successfulstrategy and starts using it against you?
For example, you offer a popular product at the lowestprice in radio commercials. Your competitor hears you areracking up the sales and airs his own radio ads. His price iseven lower than yours.
If you're the bigger of the two firms, ignore you competitor.You probably won't be too off base in figuring manycustomers who notice the copycat will realize they'restealing your ideas.
You can also shift your marketing slightly. Instead oftouting your low price, talk about your speed, service,friendly employees, and convenient location.
You can also take on your competitor publicly. Point outwhat they are doing and give a blow-by-blow explanation ofhow you are beating them. This works especially well ifyou are the underdog trying to get attention. A row in themedia can stir up attention and improve sales for everyone.

All you need to distribute an ebook is to put the ebook on yourweb site server and provide a link on your site to download it.Then promote your ebook. That's usually done with part of theebook converted to articles and sent around the Net to ezines,etc. Best of luck!

Can't Think of What to Write? Pick a Word

Sometimes the most difficult part of writing is just gettingstarted. What might help? Pick a word or idea and begin "talkingon paper."
All you need to do is let go and let your thoughts take youwhere they want to go. It does not really matter where you start;all that matters is that you did start!
Put your pen on paper and start writing anything that comes tomind. Don't let your critical voice take over. You're notallowed to change anything, just write the first thing you thinkof.
Think of a blind date. It will probably be awkward, but you willfind SOMETHING to talk about. Writing is exactly the same.
I find that once you get started, the words start to help you.The page will create its own rules helping you to know what towrite next.
Remember that good writing begins with a single word.

4 Ways to Start a Sales Letter

Over the years, writers have found that there are certain typesof openings in direct mail that are more effective than others.These work just as well for email letters and for web sites.
Here are some of these ideas to keep in mind when you are tryingto structure your opening.
1) State the offer. This is so simple many people never think ofit. Put the offer right at the top of your page in a headline orbold type. The offer includes the product that is forsale, its price, the terms of the sale, and the guarantee.
2) Announce it! If you have something new, start your letterwith this important information. Nothing gets attention andbuilds excitement like the word NEW. I always put it in allcapitals to give it added excitement.
3) Flatter the reader. There is nothing a customer likes morethan to feel as though they are set apart from "the crowd".Describe the type of person who would probably be one of yourbest customers. Tell why the way they feel, work, think, or playis important and deserves attention. Use the word "YOU" as oftenas you can.
4) Use a provocative quote. Quote a famous person or a customer.The quote should arouse curiosity. It should make the reader wantto find out more about your product.

Good choice! Avon is one of the most successful MLMs in thebusiness. You might want to start small with friends and family,and offer incentives/discounts for people who bring you morecustomers by word of mouth. Also try to eave catalogs in publicplaces with your contact information stamped on them (withpermission, of course). Try leaving them in beauty salons,grocery store checkouts, mall food courts, etc. I know someonewho's even left them in shopping carts at Target or Walmart andhad a few calls.
