Paragraph at the Top of Your Opening Web Page

What's the number one way web sites shoot themselves in the foot?Everyday I get notes from nice people wanting me to take a lookat their web sites. The sites aren't selling, and they want toknow why.
More often than not, the graphics look great and the copy on theinner pages is just fine. The killer mistake is there isn't muchcopy at the top of the opening page.
Give your opening index.html page a headline and a paragraph ortwo. They should tell people what you can do for them. Thisshort copy also does well to mention what kinds of customers youhelp.
For example, Jose's site sells a wide variety of sunglasses.Summer is coming and Jose wants to increase his conversion ofvisitors to buyers. He has lots of appealing product photos ofhis best-selling sunglasses, but there isn't any copy tointroduce his site. It leaves new visitors guessing (andconfused first-timers usually click away within a couple ofseconds).
Jose can solve the problem by putting a headline and paragraph atthe top of his page that reads like this:

The 10-30-60 Marketing Rule

People often want to know how much they should spend onmarketing. There is no standard answer, but we do havesome good rules of thumb we can use.
The 10-30-60 Marketing Rule says to spend 10 percent ofyour ad budget on untargeted marketing. Your ads shouldbe aimed at everyone. The idea is to do a broad sweepacross the public to find a few people who will becomeinterested prospects.
Spend 30 percent of your budget on interested prospects.This is targeted advertising to specific opt-in lists, postcardsto certain people in your industry, and mailings to peoplewho have called or emailed for more information.
Finally, spend 60 percent on current and previouscustomers. People who have already bought from you areby far the most likely to buy again.
One of the Net's biggest problems right now is there are somany people who are jumping on that it is easy to forget tomarket to our past customers.

Creating a Successful MLM Business

There was a time when Multi-Level Marketing was a dirty word tomany people. It conjured up images of uncle Eddy invitingneighbors over for dinner only to hound them mercilessly to joinhis organization.
The Internet and America's sharp move toward home-based businesshas changed much of that. Today MLM companies have hugeoperations that rival any of America's large corporations.Members don't have to bug friends and neighbors because they canfind plenty of opportunity seekers online.
I've watched the MLM industry for years. Lots of people don'tmake money at it because--surprise--they don't work very hard tomake their business a success. On the other hand, I know plentyof folks who worked with determination and were earning sixfigures within a few years.
Here are some things to consider when setting up your MLMbusiness:
1. Consider how much the business will cost you each month. Ifone opportunity requires you to buy $50 in product each monthwhile another wants you to purchase $200 in product, pick the oneyou can easily afford month after month.
2. Get into a business that sells consumable products orservices. You want customers who use it up and come back formore month after month. Repeat product sales is where the bigchecks come from.
3. Come up with a marketing routine that keeps you motivated.Talk to people you meet, network online, send out postcards, talkto groups. Find what works best for you, then do it, do it, doit long after anyone else would have given up. In business,being stubborn is an asset.

Ask 50 successful online businesses how they keep the customerscoming and about 48 will tell you: "It's our ezine." Emailnewsletters are quite frankly the Internet's secret weapon. Theykeep you in front of customers and prospects until they buy.
Here are three ways to make sure your email newsletter is abusiness-building hit:
1. Try to include information that has a limited life-span.People need to read it NOW and not put it off until later.Include tips on limited opportunities, temporary events, andshort-term sales.
2. By the same token, your ezine should include informationpeople want to keep for a long time. One professional wassurprised to learn many organizations had saved ALL hernewsletter issues going back for years. "Many have them printedand bound for later reference." Use a Local Celebrity

Advertisers use national celebrities--movies stars and sport
figures--all the time. That is an effective way to promote if
you can afford it.

One far cheaper and effective strategy is to use LOCAL
celebrities. Get a popular radio DJ, news reporter,
politician, social figure, or merchant in your town to appear
in your ads or on your website.

Prospect's eyes and ears will perk up when they see your
well-known local character.

Some local celebrities are prevented by their employer from
appearing in commercials, but many more are just waiting to
be asked.

Radio DJs often have audiences of tens of thousands of
faithful listeners, yet rarely get a chance to appear on TV,
newspapers, or on the Net. Offer them a fee to appear in

Email Your Press Release--Get FREE Publicity From BIG Media

The media thrives on press releases. Over half of the news you
read in business publications comes from press releases sent to
them by businesses and organizations.

Media is more competitive than ever. TV stations, radio,
newspapers, and networks have all had to scale back and tighten
budgets. This means they rely more than ever on the good stories
YOU send them. A newsworthy press release can pull in lots of
FREE media coverage for your business.

Make sure your story is something the media audience will be
interested in. Editors hate getting a release that is really an
ad disguised as a release. For press release format, check out

Send your release to media via email. Almost everyone in media
uses email. There are several very good email release services
that have long lists of media contacts. Xpresspress.com is
well-known and does a nice job. Keep in mind most release
services have the same media addresses.

very specialized list of media. If you send out lots of releases,

You can save your Word doc as a text file, then paste
into an email and send in the body of the email. That's
how I and many others do it. Otherwise, you may be able
to send in HTML format. You'll need to design your newsletter
in an HTML editor (like Frontpage) then paste the HTML code
into an email. There are other ways to do it, but those are the
most common and simple ways.

Good to hear from you and great to learn you remember my
"100 Ways to Make Your Website SELL!" back in the 90s.
By the way, it was the FIRST Website Sell report available coming
well before a well-known Canadian doctor made a fortune with a
very similar title.

The formula for how often to update your web site copy is --
as often as your audience expects it. If your business changes
every week (for example, you're a musician who books new shows
every week) then you'll want to update weekly. If new
information comes in by the hour, you may want to look for a way
to update info several times per day (search engines love that!)

Most sites don't need to update that often. My business offers
the same popular writing and promotion packages year after year.
I might update my home page at DrNunley.com just a few times per
year. The infrequent changes create a stability that many people
take comfort in.

emailing your press release is an excellent method. This works
particularly well for reaching your local and regional media.
Email is the preferred method to receive a release because it's
already in the reporter's computer and it's easy to forward to
the correct person.

How to Handle Rejection

Part of selling anything is handling rejection. It's alwaysgreatwhen a prospect says "I'm so glad to see you. This is just whatIneed!" But the law of averages says most of the people youcome in contact with won't be that enthusiastic.
There are so many ads and people trying to get us to spendmoney that most of us put on a stern face any time a salesperson approaches. This doesn't mean we dislike the salesperson, just that we're getting psyched up to hold our ground.
Of course, a good sales person realizes this and works to set ourreservations at ease, helping us to relax and understand how thesales person may be able to solve our problems.
Keep this in mind when you are selling something. It doesn'tmatter if you are selling cars, telling a neighbor about your MLMopportunity, or using email to sell yourself to a prospectiveemployer.
Rejection is part of the game. Realize people aren't rejectingyou personally, but the situation. In most cases they simplyaren't ready to buy at this time. No doesn't usually mean no,butnot right now. A week, month, or year from the now theprospect who rejected your sales pitch may come looking foryou wanting to buy.

I've seen some good folks pour a trundle of money intoadvertising products and services, only to come up emptyhanded. "The ads didn't work!" they said in exasperation.
If you try good targeted advertising, you keep at it for awhile, and yet nothing sells, step back. First take a look atyour ad, then at your product.
A product that is only slightly different from many otherproducts probably won't pass the "just noticeable differencetest." That is where YOU notice the difference, but it's notdifferent enough for customers to notice.
Price is also an important factor. If what you're sellingcould also be found at Walmart, or Staples, or Amazon.comat a cheaper price, your product or service had better offer awhole lot more to support a higher price.
Finally, your product or service may be too new--peoplejust don't understand it--or it solves a need few peoplerecognize they have.

Get Banners That Work

Recent figures show Internet ad banners now only get aboutone person in 100 to click on them and go to theadvertiser's site. That is not nearly as good as banners oncedid, but it is right in line with the response you get fromother kinds of advertising.
There is good news here. With some of the shine comingoff banners as an ad tool, there are many top sites in yourindustry that are selling banners dirt cheap. Call them upand ask--maybe $1 per 100 banner impressions (animpression is when someone sees your banner).
There are also good ways to make your banner work better:
* Design your banner as large as allowed. Bigger getsattention, pure and simple.
* New studies show people take only one second to glanceat your banner. If you don't grab them then, you've lostthem. Your banner should clearly state your offer,preferably with a graphic that reinforces your message.
*Don't take the soft sell approach. A banner that surprises,shocks, entertains, or appeals to a strong special interestwill get more clicks.
