What's Your Problem?

We all tend to think of our products and services in terms of thewonderful things they do for customers. Also think of thespecific PROBLEMS your products and services solve.
The reason for this is that is the way customers think. Theybecome interested in you when they understand you have somethingthat can improve or solve a problem they are struggling with.
Make your marketing point out the problems your product orservice solves. Find one particularly common and pressingproblem to headline your sales letter, ad, or web page.
Also make sure your marketing helps customers understand whatproblems you solve.
Many prospects may have the problem but don't yet know it.Their awareness increases as you explain the problem, how itbothers them, and how it holds the prospect back.
This simple technique was responsible for an advertisingrevolution 80 years ago. At one time people didn't know they hadbad breath or their house wasn't clean. The awareness of thoseproblems was created by advertising.

Make Your Brochure Cover Sell

Most people read a brochure starting with the front cover. Watchpeople when they pick up a brochure. Many will see the backcover first, but will flip it over to start at the front.
Lots of brochures make the mistake of simply listing their nameand contact info on the front cover. While those things areimportant, you also want to get right to SELLING with abenefit-packed headline.
Make your headline tell the most important part of your story:"WHO IS EARNING $1,000 PER MONTH WITH THIS SIMPLE CHANGE?"
Questions work well because they entice readers to turn the pageand read the rest of your brochure.
You can also state your main benefit, then encourage prospects toturn inside to get the full story."BOOST SALES AT LEAST $1,000 WITH THE METHOD200....detailsinside."
Include photos and illustrations that help quickly convey yourmessage.

One of the Net's best tools to turn yourself into a recognizedexpert in your field are discussion groups. These can be UseNetnewsgroups (check with your Internet Service Provider for how tofind them, or do a web search) or they can be discussion groupson web sites. There are also email discussion groups, sometimescalled listservs or majordomos.
Pick two or three groups to participate in. Join, then hide andwatch for a while. Get to know what kinds of topics arediscussed. When someone asks a question, be the one to give thema good, solid answer. Answer a question once or twice each week.Keep your answer strictly non-commercial, but include your name,email, and website at the end.

Keywords can be tricky. Sites often discover that people don'tsearch for them with the keywords they expected. Instead ofsearching for "sports equipment" they search for "footballsupplies." Rather than typing in "CPA" they type "bookkeepinghelp."
Think of all the different ways people describe what you do. Usethe same words and phrases you hear many of your customers use.
Big companies buy access to a database of keywords supplied bysearch engines. You can get similar results with programs thatcheck the effectiveness of your search terms.

Naming Your Web Site

Finding a great domain name for your web site has never beeneasy, but now it has gotten harder.
If you searched for a good dot-com name and everything seemedto be taken, your eyes weren't playing tricks on you.
The Internet's phenomenal rise has left good domain names inshort supply. Of the 25,000 commonly used words in the Englishlanguage, 93% have been registered as domain names.
Experts say your best bet is to find a short name that describeswhat you do. If that is already registered, stick an "i" or "z"on the front.
Memorable nonsense words can also work. What does eBaymean? Amazon was a big river, but now is the world's largestbookstore. Beware, these kinds of names take a lot ofadvertising to establish in the minds of prospects.
People who study language say we tend to remember colors andfood (this secret must already be out...redpie.com is taken).

Add Email to Your Direct Mail

Judging from the big bundle of junk mail the letter carrierbrings every day, direct mail is working for a lot of companies.Even Internet firms are pushing their wares via the postalservice.
Regular direct mail isn't for light pocketbooks. Good mailinglists are expensive. Printing and postage run even higher easilycosting $5,000 for a list of 10,000 names.
While many people have achieved success simply mailing a fewpieces a week consistently over a long period of time, directmail is mostly used by big firms with equally big ad budgets.
You can use email to reach more prospects at a very affordableprice. Honest, targeted opt-in email lists (where people haveASKED to be on the list) sell for .20 to .25 cents per name. Andthat includes sending your sales letter in most cases.
A few years ago when only 17% of North Americans were online,the Internet crowd was limited to a few types of customers.Today, more than half are surfing the Internet with a marketshare equal to cable TV's.

You can get your own domain name that forwards to youraffiliate link. It costs about $14 and is easy to set up.I use http://oriweb.com for that.
Over the years we've written hundreds of releases forpeople with affiliate sites. I've never heard from media thatthey have a preference either way. So you would probably beok with just the affiliate link.

In my town, there are many book aficionados. They barter, buy &sell left & right. Aside from bookworms, many also indulge incafes. I've thought of a coffee shop where one could leisurelyread while sipping java or munching on something. Then an ideastruck me: why don't I put up a small cozy cafe, serving justsandwiches, coffee concoctions & pastries, then set up a minilibrary within. I could put my Cosmopolitan Philippines magazinecollection as well as my Danielle Steele and Sweet Dreams novelsI could rent the books for a fee [with a membership]. That's a great idea. If you can find the right location at anaffordable price, you should give it a go. You might only loanout books that could be easily replaced. Or maybe it would bebetter not to loan them out at all, but to have some unusual orhard-to-find books that people would come back again and againto read.

Is Full-Time Income With Part-Time Work Possible?

Recently a guy posted an ad on a marketing discussion board.Usually the moderator of the board is supposed to delete ads.But this guy's ad posed an interesting question.
He told readers he had a business opportunity that wouldearn you full-time income for part-time work. "Just a fewhours a week and you can be earning more than you are inyour current job," he wrote.
Is this really possible? It may be, but like most good thingsin life, earning a lot of money without working much is a lotharder than it looks.
I find once you get your business rolling, you really can earna good income while doing your core work just a few hoursa day. If you design web sites, or prepare taxes, or buildcustom furniture, the actual time you're doing the service orbuilding the product may account for a solid income andonly take a few hours each day.
However, there is a world of customer service, promotion,and just plain putting out fires that always seems to take upanother 12 hours a day.
As your business grows and becomes more successful(allow yourself a few years to accomplish this) you cangradually farm your time-consuming duties out to others.
Outsource email answering, customer service, andpromotion to people who specialize in it. There is agrowing army of virtual workers who can take car of justabout any office task via the Internet quickly and cheaply(check your favorite search engine).

Conquer Customer Doubt

The biggest hurdle advertising has to jump is doubt. Mostpeople take ads with a grain of salt. They generally don'tbelieve everything you say and sometimes don't acceptanything your ad claims.
Fortunately there are several ways to conquer customerdoubt.
Include testimonials from satisfied customers. Usecomments that reflect the main benefits you give tocustomers. Yesterday we got a note from a client thankingus for "completing my sales letter so fast and writing soconvincingly." That's just the kind of thing ourcustomers want and you can bet his words will go on oursite soon.
Get endorsements from other well known people in yourindustry. Customers will think if SHE thinks this is a gooddeal, it must be. You see the endorsement technique usedwell on a lot of sites selling ebooks and courses. Expertsoften give you an endorsement just for promoting theirname in your materials.
Finally, provide proof that your product or service works aspromised. Show the exact results several clients got. Somesites even display their bank statement or large checks theyhave received.

Make Sure Your Web Site Is Right Before You Advertise

Recently a customer spent a pretty hefty sum of money topromote his web site. I knew something was wrong whenhe contacted me three weeks later saying he hadn't sold asingle product.
His site looked good. A professional designer had given it agreat look with slick graphics. Unfortunately, when I wentin search of the product he was advertising it took five orsix clicks to find it.
Here is what happened to prospects and why the site wasn'tselling anything:1. The prospect sees the ad.2. She clicks to the site.3. She is greeted with a doorway page.4. When she finds the link at the bottom of the doorwaypage she is taken to a home page with very little informationon it.5. If she clicks on the "home" link she gets the doorwaypage again.6. If she clicks on the "about us" link she gets the homepage she is already on.7. One more click and she might find the product page withthe item she came looking for.
How many customers will look through page after page tofind the product or service you advertised? Not many.Click rates go down dramatically after the first page.Hardly anyone will click three levels deep.
Moral of the story: have your opening web page clearlypromote whatever you are advertising. Otherwise, your addollars may be wasted.

Great to hear from you! A publicity packet can be constructedseveral ways, but I like to include a press release, a page ofquestions with answers, possibly a bio, and maybe a photo. Youcould quickly construct a fine press release from the copy onyour site's home page and booking page. You could combine your"about me" page copy with a photo for an excellent bio sheet.Then write down the four questions you get asked the most and theanswers to them. This gives media some questions and answersthey can use.

Get a Great Theme--Then Don't Change it

Good marketing themes are one of those things that getsbetter with age. A good theme can be used for decades,gaining familiarity and power with each passing year.
"The loneliest repairman in town," "Less filling, tastesgreat," and "You're in good hands" all immediately bring tomind their owner's brand.
Make your marketing theme a single short sentence thattells what you do and what main benefit you givecustomers. I like to write two or three sentences, then takea pen and start chopping phrases and words. Eventuallyyou can distill your thoughts into a natural flowing fewwords.
Be careful that you don't use trendy words that could goout of fashion in a few years. You also don't want to betoo limiting. For example, "Books at low prices" may notwork in a few years when your bookstore starts carryingvideos and CDs.
Use your theme on every piece of marketing: your web site,business card, newspaper ads, ezine classifieds, even TVcommercials and invoices.

A Plan For Promoting an Affiliate Program

Affiliate programs are a great way to earn a little extramoney each month working the Internet. While somepeople earn up to $1,000 or more per month, most whowork affiliate programs seriously land $200 to $700.
Here's a brief plan for making money with these programs:1. Put a two or three line ad about the program in thesignature file of all your emails (that bit of info that goesafter your note). "Sig" files are a powerful way to include amarketing message along with your personalnotes--probably the most effective marketing tool of all.
