Celebrate Your Sales

Doesn't matter what you are selling, rejection is part of the
game. Not everyone will be interested in your offer and a
few will make it a point to rub their disinterest in your face.

Rejection is easier for some people than it is for others.
It doesn't matter who you are, repeated rejection can sting.
You may need a strategy for keeping your spirits up if you are
marketing something where a LOT of rejection is part of the
process.

Have your team celebrate each success. When one person
breaks through and makes a sale, take time for high five's
all around. It is not nearly so hard to remain enthusiastic
when others around you are smiling.

This simple strategy is standard for sports teams. In an
endeavor where attitude is critically important, it works
wonders to have the entire team celebrate successes. Those
who are failing are buoyed by those who succeed.

If you work by yourself, arrange to have others you know
stay in touch via phone. Even an occasional short voice
mail message can make a difference. Those on the Internet

What Your Website Color Scheme Says to Visitors

We are constantly surrounded by color. Because our world is so
saturated with thousands of hues, we don't consciously notice the
effects different colors have on us. But even if we don't notice
it, color changes our mood, our appetite, our sleep patters, even
our metabolism.

That is why it is so important to carefully plan the color scheme
of your website. Not only does color influence the way people
feel when they visit your website, but it also determines whether
your site will be seen as professional or amateur, appropriate or
off-key.

There is an almost endless supply of color choices for the web,
but don't get carried away. Just because you like 20 different
colors doesn't mean they should all be incorporated into your
site. Choose only a few--three is probably enough--and go from
there.

Also, remember to pick hues that complement each other. Use a
background that contrasts with the color of your text. The common
choice is black text on a white background. If you have a lot of
text for visitors to read, this will be the easiest on their
eyes. Never pair a light background and a light text--unless you
want your visitors to go blind, that is.

Consider the subtle, emotional effects your color scheme will
have on visitors. Red stimulates metabolism and makes people
hungry. Blues and greens promote serenity, calm, peace, and
order. Yellow is cheerful and usually improves a person's mood.

Ask yourself who your audience is. If you are designing the site
for children, reds and yellows are good choices. Many shades of
blue exude professionalism, wealth and power, but not all. If you
want to create corporate style identity, steer clear of
sentimental blues, like cornflower blue. If you are going for a
look that appeals to a nature and outdoors group, go for earth
tones like brown and green.

Offer a Personal Explanation

The biggest reason people don't buy is they don't
understand enough about what you're selling. One way to
get passed this hurdle, ESPECIALLY for expensive
products or services, is to provide a one-on-one info session
with the prospect.

Invite prospects to come in for a one hour, no pressure, no
purchase expected information session. Sit down with
them, listen to all their concerns, answer each one taking as
much time as needed.

Not every prospect will be willing to commit the time. Not
all will trust you aren't going to put them over a barrel (like
those free weekend condo guys who won't leave you alone
about purchasing a timeshare).

On the other hand, getting to the bottom of all your
prospect's concerns and questions right from the start can
vastly reduce the time it takes to get a sale and ultimately
increase the number or sales you make.

Just as important, people who are willing to spend
one-on-one time with us, who know a subject and are ready
to share their knowledge, are the people we trust and
admire most.

How to Respond to a Question

You're on the phone with a customer. She asks a question.
How do you respond? Being a good listener as well as
being good at answering questions is a key part of selling.

Many of us take too long to answer the question. Or in the
process of answering, we feel like we're losing ground with
the customer. We start to make excuses, cave in with a
lower price, or over extend by offering to add more at no
charge.

When a customer or prospect asks a question:

* Listen closely. Try not to think of your response until
you've heard the entire question.

* Pause a second to organize your thoughts. You aren't a
politician. Pausing before you speak isn't considered a sign
of indecision. The customer will feel you're taking the
trouble to come up with a response customized to their
particular situation.

* Repeat the customer's question.

* Give an answer that provides one point. Some marketers
like to include a hint that leads to a second point that can be
brought up a moment later.

* Stop there. Don't say another word. Let the customer
reply. This is especially true if you ask for the sale or give
your price. The next person who speaks loses the
negotiation.

You can save your Word doc as a text file, then paste
into an email and send in the body of the email. That's
how I and many others do it. Otherwise, you may be able
to send in HTML format. You'll need to design your newsletter
in an HTML editor, then paste the HTML code into an email. There
are other ways to do it, but those are the most common and simple
ways.

4 Ways to Start a Sales Letter

Over the years, writers have found that there are certain types
of openings in direct mail that are more effective than others.
These work just as well for email letters and for web sites.

Here are some of these ideas to keep in mind when you are trying
to structure your opening.

1) State the offer. This is so simple many people never think of
it. Put the offer right at the top of your page in a headline or
bold type. The offer includes the product that is for
sale, its price, the terms of the sale, and the guarantee.

2) Announce it! If you have something new, start your letter
with this important information. Nothing gets attention and
builds excitement like the word NEW. I always put it in all
capitals to give it added excitement.

3) Flatter the reader. There is nothing a customer likes more
than to feel as though they are set apart from "the crowd".
Describe the type of person who would probably be one of your
best customers. Tell why the way they feel, work, think, or play
is important and deserves attention. Use the word "YOU" as often
as you can.

4) Use a provocative quote. Quote a famous person or a customer.
The quote should arouse curiosity. It should make the reader want
to find out more about your product.

Can't Think of What to Write? Pick a Word

Sometimes the most difficult part of writing is just getting
started. What might help? Pick a word or idea and begin "talking
on paper."

All you need to do is let go and let your thoughts take you
where they want to go. It does not really matter where you start;
all that matters is that you did start!

Put your pen on paper and start writing anything that comes to
mind. Don't let your critical voice take over. You're not
allowed to change anything, just write the first thing you think
of.

Think of a blind date. It will probably be awkward, but you will
find SOMETHING to talk about. Writing is exactly the same.

I find that once you get started, the words start to help you.
The page will create its own rules helping you to know what to
write next.

Great to hear from you. Often you can use stats like that
to learn which pages and what info are getting the most
attention. You might make that info easier to get to while
deleting or deemphasizing material people don't seem to care
about. You can also see where important info is getting missed.
In those cases you can make the link bigger, bolder, or put it
closer to the top of the home page.
